Yesterday morning about 1(1 o'clock, engine No. Mi. of the Camden and i'.iirlliigtou County L'uilroad, exploded its boiler w hile attached to a mail train, passing between Washington and Water streets, Mount Holly, N. . I. The engine was raised from the wheels and thrown violently into the air, and de scended upon the truck with tremendous force, breaking ties, bending rails, and scattering pieces ol machinery in every direction. Again springing Into the air, It made several revo lutions, and llnally lodged in the Kaneoeas creek, n distance of Kid feet from where the exnlosion oc curred. The cars were thrown together In one eon fused mass. The engineer. Job Woskll. and the lire mail. Charles L. Piatt, were both fatally injured, being horribly scalded and mangled. 'The con ductor, .lohn Savler, Is very seriously hurt, but hopes ure entertained of his recovery. Mr. Sayler whs thrown under some cars and rubbish, and was only extricated with great dltllculty; he was se riously scalded, and his face and head were cut severely. The pig-top brakesman. Edward Joyep, was blown with the gig into an adjoining held, bin escaped with u broken arm. There were live others on diilVrcnt parts of the trail), who escaped w ith slight bruises. The explosion was caused by too great a pressure of steam, it being necessary for heavy trams to put on a full head, in consequence of the Hteep grade at this point. The scene of the accident was a sad one. and was visited by hundreds of spectators. The concussion caused by the explosion was terrific, shaking the buildings in the Immediate vicinity to their founda tions. A miraculous escape w as that of a gentleman walking upon the track, In the opposite direction from the train; he stepped to the left of the track immediately before the explosion occurred, to avoid the train.
