MUSICAL. Aftn PCTAJIAT1C.
Mrt. Ada About m MrrrhRnt f Venire" at
the Walnut.
Mr. Brongham last evening, in a peculiarly Brough
ftmish Rpeeea before tho ourtatn, ventod hia iU
humor on aome of the orltloa for not noticing hia
new piece, on the pnbllo for not attending to wit
ness it, and on tho audience present for not applaud
ing. This little ebullition of bile was amusing, but
impudent and in the worst possible taste, and
almost any actor but John Brougham would have
been heartily hissed for such an exhibition.
. f With regard to tho burlesque, the merits of which
we hope the public will discover before Mr.
Brougham's engagement concludes, so that he will
have an opportunity to regain his good humor, we
have to aay that it is about the i best
affair of the kind that Mr. Brougham has
yet produced, and It is beyond all comparison supe
rior to the stupid English travesties of historical and
. classic atortes which have come to us lately from the
other Bide of the Atlantic. The piece Is a lively and
laughable burlesque on The Merchant of Venice, a
subject that is understood and appreciated by the
theatre-going public ; it Is full of good puns, Jokt,
and hits at the manners of the times, such as no one
can get off better than John Brougham. The court
scene in the second act is particularly amusing, and
It fulfils the true end of caricature by burlesquing a
burlesque court of justice, such as too many in New
York city are, if we are to believe the unanimous
opinion or the papers of that city.
Mr. Brougham's "Shylock" is something that our
' play-goers should see if they wish to understand
what genuine burlesque acting is. Mr. Brougham
does not merely give an exaggerated imitation of
the high-strung manners of eminent tragedians, hut
he really acts the part with a terrible earnestness
and real passion that are irresistibly ludicrous In con
trast with the funny text and tho laughable situa
tions. It is this kind of burlesque that Kobson, the
English actor, was famous for, If report is to be cre
diteda combination of low comedy with high
tragedy that brings the ridiculous almost up to the
level of the sublime. There is a real art about such
acting, and it is a very different thing from the heel
ing and toeing and leg business that have been
palmed off of late on the public as burlesque.
The Walnut street company support Mr. Brougham
better than they did the London actors who appeared
there a few weeks ago, but there is still considerable
room for improvement. Mrs. Wolcot, as "Lorenzo,"
acta with a great deal of spirit, but the rest of the
cast do not distinguish themselves In a very remark
able manner except by general dullness.
The new domestic drama by J. T. Williams, enti
tled The Peep Show Man, is an interesting little piece
of considerable merit The plot travels a little out of
the well-worn dramatic rat, and it introduces a first
rate specimen of the traditional stage sailor, "Jack
Trudget," the peep-show man. This part Is very well
acted by Mr. Walcot, and the drama, In conjunction
with Mr. Brougham's burlesque, makes a bill of en
tertainment that ought to prove attractive to tho
public
The City AnurnenM,
At thk Acadkmt op Music Auber's opera of Mono
niello will be performed this evening for the first time
In English.
To-morrow Fra IHavolo will be given, and on Fri
day Traviala will be performed for Mr. Castle's
benefit.
At tub Chrskut Miss Elaia Holt and her English
burlesque troupe will appear this evening In a new
burlesque by li. J. Byron, entitled Lucretia Borgia, vr
la Grand DritrcHne.
AT thk Walnut Mr. John Brougham's 'burlesque
of Much Ado About a Merchant cf Venice ami the
dramatic drama of The Peep-Shou Man will be per
formed this evening.
At thb Arch Lotta's new drama of Pepina W1I be
represented this evening and to-morrow for the last
times. On Friday Lotta will have a farewell benefit
previous to her departure for California.
On Monday Mr. Barton lllll, who is about to sail
for Europe, will have a farewell benefit.
. . At this Amkkican a variety of attractions will be
presented this evening.
Thb Nbw Yokk Cikccs, nnder the management of
L. li. Lent, now located on Eighth street, above
Kacc, Is attracting crowded audiences. A good
circus performance is an excellent entertainment,
and this troupe is one of the best organized we have
had in this city. Those who admire tine riding and
skilful acrobalism should visit this establishment.
Performances are given every afternoon and even
ing. Fkofkshor Jambs McClintock, M. D. will com
mence, on Monday, May IT, a course of popular
lectures on anatomy, physiology, etc., at Concert
Hall, which promises to be interesting, Instructive,
and practically useful. The Importance of some
knowledge of the structure and functions of the
body, with a view to the preservation of health and
the prevention of disease, is generally conceded ; but
until very recently it has not been possible to present
the necessary information In such a shape as will be
appreciated by the public generally. Professor Mc
Clintock has long been known as a learned and
eloquent teacher of medicine, and those who attend
his course of lectures will receive instruction that
will be of advantage in every walk of life.
Th Boston Pback Fbstival Committee on
Accommodation to Strangers have established a bu
reau at No. 84 Washington street, Boston, Hoom A,
where a record will be kept of such rooms, halls,
vestries, or unoccupied houses as may be secured
for the comfortable shelter of the thousands of per
sons in excess of the ordinary accommodations fur
nished by the city hotels, who will visit Boston
daring the Jubilee week in J tine.
' "Tub Tbmihcst," although produced in a most
unerb manner and with an unexceptionable cast.
at Flak's Opera House in New York, may be set
down as a failure. Mr. B. L. Davenport's Imperso
nation of "Prospero" has been extolled as a master-
' piece of acting by the critics. This gentleman has
been engaged by Mrs. John Weed, and will com
mence an engagement in London early In September
next. We shall hope to see him at one of our thea
tres prior to his departure. A Miss Davenport is
- announced for an engagement at Fox's Varieties.
Our readers must not confound the lady with Miss
Fanny Davenport, of the Arch Street Theatre. The
latter accompanies her father to England in the
fall.
