To the HiilisoriliiTM nnd Friend ol the Phila
delphia I'oiuilain Middy. , i
Remarks and criticisms having been made
from time to timo iipou tho fountains which
have been erected by tho Philadelphia Fountain
Society, I beg leave to state that every effort has
been made, and will continue to bo made, on the
art of the officers, to render their fountains, as
tliey are intended to be, useful and ornamental
to the city; that the funds in the hand of the
Treasurer at the present time do not authorize
an expenditure ot their means in ornamentation,
which would only prevent their extension and
contract the line of their usefulness, but that
they hope in lime, ns their subscribers aud dona
tions increase, to exercise more taste, and make
their fountains not onlv a blessing to all, but au
ornament to the citv ol Philadelphia.
At the present stage of their organization, nnd
the limited means at their disposal, the officers
can onlv hope to provide water in tho streets
for both man and beast tho main object of their
care and solicitude. Iho model which has been
adopted Is plain and substantial, aud as well
adapted for the purposes intended as any to be
lound in other parts ot the world, and our
friends should consider that, where usefulness is
the chief object, architectural beauty becomes a
secondary consideration.
The objection made to tho foam sometimes
remaining in the horse-trough opposite Seventh
and iilnut streets, ironi there being no over
flow to carry it off, is natural and just a delect
that has not escaped the vigilance ot the foun
tain Committee, and which has been corrected in
the construction of the fountain in Chesinit
street, above Huh. 1 he necessity ol avoiilinn
the waste of water lias limited the supply at the
lountams. winch otherwise might he a serious
objection to the Water Department, in the large
number ol tountaius proposed to bo erected by
the sodetv.
With these explanations I hope that a liberal
feeling will be extended to the humane purposes
of the society, and every encouragement given
to make our city deserving ol the name of the
City of Fountains.
