The London Alhenaium has the following uoi
tlcc of a work on tlio Feudal Castles of tho
western provinces of France, by the author of
"Flemish Interiors," recently published in
London:
It was no bad notion which led tho writer of
the .book now before ifs to travel among the
relics of feudality in France, and give special
attention to the great fortresses of the Loire.
Touraino is, perhaps, for such a purpose richer
than any other province, not alone in respect of
the magnificence of her castles, but tho variety
and picturcsqnenesB of her legends. Few pro
vinces 'are more 'wealthy in . historical illus
trations, w nat, in these respects, surpasses
Amboisc, -which stands upon the rock above
the bridge over tho Loire '( It is a building of
the sixteenth century, for the most part, but
retains the very hall where Louis the Eleventh
met . his brother, the" King of Sicily; ' to say
nothing of having been the homd of" Margaret
of Anjou. Here Charles the Affable was born
and bred; hero the poor youth, who was to
bo king a brief while, learned his lessons, paced
the forests and the gardens; here was betrothed
Mary of Burgundy's- dttmrhtcr, Margaret, to
the future Charles the Eighth, a scene which
lives iu tho pages of Do Commiues. It was
not a religious ceremony, but the notary,
in a loud voice, asked tho Dauphin if he
would marry "Mademoiselle Mariruerite d'Au-
triebc." and vice verm. Both parties answered
In the allirmative, whereupon sho kissed him
three times, and all returned to the castle.
The marriage was afterwards dissolved, Marga
ret sent nome aain, ana uiiarics was wedded
to Anne of Brittany. It was in this castle,
says Monstrclet, that the king was loitering
with Anne the Queen, and looking at some
tennis-players in the courtyard, when he felt
the first attack of that illness which soon slew
him. A story goes that he struck his head
against a low doorway, and forgot the incident
lor some weeks; then, leading the queen to see
a game at tennis, he swooned ou the same spot
and never recovered his senses. The tiasres and
Iieople of the court went to and fro as their
Cing lay there stunned aud passing from life to
death, but no one mustered courage or tender
ness enough to help him away. They seem to
have been as much stunned as their master, al
though he was greatly beloved. The low-browed
doorway is yet shown where this young king is
reported to have met his death. De Coinmiiies'
account differs considerably from this. Queen
Anne, in her lirst sorrow, vowed to remain a
widow; but, as if to justify the sayings of sati
rists, ere long she married Charles' successor,
Louis the Iwcllth, an early love. An obstacle
of great weight, being no" less Important than
Louis' first wife, stood in the way of this second
union: Jeanne was divorced, and passed a pain
ful existence in a convent at Bourgcs. Francis
the rirst spent much ot bis time at Amboisc.
Margaret, Francis' sister, lived loug there, and
here compiled that famous work which, more
than anything else, has preserved her name for.

Leonardo da Vinci, to be within call, for the
latter place is barely two miles away from the
old residence of tho French monarchs: bv his
will the painter desired to be buried iii tho
Church of St. Floreutiu, at Amboisc; but, says
tho author, he is believed to have been interred
ii mat ot at. ueum, iu the samo city. At the
Castle of Amboisc h muds is Baid to have built
that strange sloping roadway which supplies
the place of stairs in the great tower, and was
designed, such is the story, to humor the fancy
of the Emperor Charles the Fifth, when the
French Kinjr entertained Charles, his old enemy.
while on the way to suppress the revolt of
Ghent, in 153!). Our author has gathered from
the writers of this time a very readable history
of this remarkable visit and Its seemingly inex
plicable incidents, i raucis died at Itauibouillet,
another of the fortresses which aro treated of
here. The picture of his death and what led to
it is well worth noting, even by those who aro
laminar with that strange passage ot history,
At Amboisc lived, in the very freshness of her
youth, Mary Queen of Scots: here, after her
marriage to i rands the second ot J; rauce, she
continued to reside as Queen, where many of
her innocent days were spent.
Loches, sun a irrnu out rum, follows upon
these pages; next is its fellow, ITessis-les-Tours,
or Plessis-clu-Parc, the reputation of which owes
much to "Quentiu Durward." Chaumont, the
robber-hold of the early Counts ot Touraino, a
residence of Catherine dc Medici, she bought
for 120,000 livres Touruois, in 1550; hero tho
astrologer Ruggierl showed her, iu a "magic
mirror, the mode in which the predictions of
Nostradamus, as to tlio late ot tlio royal laiuily
of France, were to be fulfilled. Five kings
passed across the wonderful glass, pacing each
taking a turn lor every year ot nis reign in a
pictured vaulted chamber, which was not that
at inamouut. Awed by the display, Catherine
left the castle, and never returned to it. She,
nevertheless, made use of the distaste which is
said to have been streuirthed by this adventure
to force upon Diane do Poitiers an exchange of
the castle ot prophecy lor that tar livelier resi
dence of Chcnoneeaux; and poor Diane, power
less since tho death of Henri Deux, was com.
polled to acijuicsce in her Imperious Majesty's
whim. Nothing could compel the once buxom
duchess to live at Chaumont. Sho died at tho
Chateau d'Anet, tho widow of De Breze, Senes
chal of Normandy. Her clligy yet weeps at
the tomb ot the seneschal iu tue cathedral ot
Rouen, and above an inscription that records a
vow, which was not kept, that sho would share
his grave. Madame do Stael such arc the
strange changes of old castles was "relegated"
bv Napoleon tho First to Chaumont.
Our author pursues an easy and pleasant
course through the histories of the Castles of
Chanibord, Kainbouillet, Chcnoneeaux, Anet,
Moutbaion et Couriers, and Blots. Sho revives
our memories with pictures of old days and
long-dead men and women. Nor does she forget
tho living; her sketches ot the nouses and tolks
ot l ouraine in these days aro naraiy less attrae
tivo than those which deal with other times and
characters.

Gents : On the night of the 22d ultimo, our store,
No. 20 South street, was entered, and a desperate at
tempt made by burglars upon one of your 6afes In our
counting-room.
The key to the safe n which we kept our securities
was locked inside of our lire-proof book safe, the
doors of which were literally cut to pieces ; from tills
they obtained tho key to tho other safe and opened
It. Fortunately we had one of your Burglar-Proof
Banker's Chests Inside, in which our valuables were
deposited. This they went to work at with a will,
and evidently used up all their time and tools In vain
attempts to force it. The night was dark and stormy,
and the fact of their knowing where our key was
kept shows that their plans were well matured. They
tried wedging the door and body of the Chest, and
the faithful safe bears evidence of the labor and skill
devoted to the work. All was useless, and it is with
great satisfaction we report that upon opening it we
found our securities all safe, and can therefore cheer
fully indorse the Burglar-Proof work recommended
by you.
You will please send the new safe purchased by us
to our counting-house, and take the old one, to show
that some safes are still manufactured woithy of the
