At the afternoon session of the Fifty-third Annual Conference of the African M. E. Church, which commenced yesterday morning in Bethel Church, the annual sermon was preached by Rev. James M. Williams. Tlio text selected was from the iilith chapter of Acts, Kith, 17th, and 18th verses, referring to the apostle's own conversion and his going forth to the ministry of his own motion, feeling himself called so to do. Upon this point he urged his hearers to do all in their power to christianize their fellows. Kindness and Christian charity towards each other would tend much towards that end. lie said that sympathy did not call men to the min istry, nor did piety or education. They must lie called by Cod. and if uuulitied for the mis sion could under Ills protection perform labors that would surprise themselves. The unity of the ministers of the Church was one of the most I important features in connection therewith, and I could not be too strongly urged. The sermon throughout was well composed and delivered in on impressive manner. The conference voted their thanks to Rev. Mr. Williams, and the ser vice concluded with prayer by Rev. .lames llol lin. Mr. Gladstone protested against the Incon sistent conduct of members, who voted for tho grant to. the Presbyterians, and who opposed compensation for the Catholics, consenting to make use of religious prejudice In their endea vor to defeat a government which was doaliug out equal justice to both. The President presented a communication from Strickland KneaBs, Esq., Chief Engineer and Surveyor, stating that he had prepared the designs lor the bridge across the Schuyl kill at l'airmount, and that the plans had been approved by the Board of Surveys. The cost of the proposed bridge will be about 4775,000. Also a communication from Mr. Thomas S. Barger, City Solicitor, announcing that the Court of Common Pleas had decided that the city has a right to lease the Girard lands for a longer period than five years. Mr. Lamm presented a communication from Patterson & Lippincott relative to the lease of Poplar street wharf, deferred to the Commissioner of City Property, with in structions to collect the rent due. Mr. Franciscus presented a communication from Dr. Wilson C. Swanu, President of the Philadelphia Fountain Society, asking per mission to locate driuking-.'buutaius upon such sites as may be selected, and for author ity to connect with the water mains. Re ferred to Committee on City Property. Mr. Pox presented a remonstrance against the removal of the precinct house in the Eighth Division of the Seventeenth Ward. Mr. Duffy offered a resolution instructing the Committee on Finance to inquire into the expediency of a subscription on the part of the city ot twenty-lave per cent, or her inter est in the Pennsylvania Railroad Company in the new stock proposed to be issued by tls&t company. Considerable discussion here ensued with re gard to the obstruction of Broad street. Upon the motiou of Mr. Smith the further discus sion of the subject was postponed for one week by a vote of 1J yeas to 10 nays. The resolution from Common Councils au thorizing the paving of Filbert street from Thirty-lourth to Thirty-eighth streets was concurred in. Also, the ordinance regulating the charge for repairing sidewalks when the work is done by the city. Also, the ordinance making an appropria tion to pay the damages for opening Willow Grove avenue. The fountains proposed to be erected will be of solid granite, with accom modations tor both man and dumb beasts, and that au arrangement lias been effected that entirely obviates the objection to the waste of water, which can only escape whilo used by those who drink at the fountain.
