CaCSlCAJU AWn ASIATIC. 'Orw rUmonN" by the Ulrhln. Troupe. The Rlchlngs English Opera Tronpo commenced cir spring season at Wo Academy of Music last Vonintf, to a moderate sized but appreciative andt noe, with Aubor's opera of Crown Din month. This work U deservedly a favorite with the public, although it Is seldom or never given nowadays, ex aept by the English troupe, as it contains somo harming music, and, If creditably porformed, Is one of the most attractive of the light operas. All the old favorites wore well re 0 clved last evonlng when they made tholr ap pearance on the stage, and the applauso wai hearty throughout the performance. Mrs. Bernard as "Catterlna" did not appear to be in quite as good voice as usual, but she In a great measure recovered power after the first act. The duet with Mr. Castlo In the Brst act, however, was finely executed and much applauded, as was the duet with Mr. 8e guln In the second act. Mrs. Snguln as "Diana," Mr. Castle as "Don Henrlrme," Mr. Campbell as "Ro bolledo," and Mr. James I'eakes as "Count do Cauipo Mayor," all sang and acted with a great deal or feel ing and expression. The orchestra, under the di rection of Mr. Behrons, was excellent, and the cho ruses were moderately well given, but open to Improvement. The costuming of this opera is un usually handsome, and It is given In a style of com pleteness that we would wish to see often Imitated. It Is rumored that this la the last season of the Itlchlngs troupe as at present organized, and our opera-goers should, therefore, make the most of the lew remaining opportunities, aa it Is doubtful whether as clllclent an English opera company can be again collected. "Peplna" at the Arch. Lotta is certainly not an actress In any propo -sense of the term, but she lias gifts which are, In their way, as Important as talent, for they take with the public, and are worth considerable In dollars and cents. As Lotta Is popular, and as her peculiar style of performances has a particular fascination for large number of persons, it seems a pity that she cannot have written for her some dramas which will possess a little merit In themselves, and at the same time allow her to give full swing to the kittenish actions which so delight her audi ences, and not, as at present, cause the banjo, walk around, and clog dance to be Introduced In season and ont of season, whether appropriate or not. Maggie Mitchell waited for somo time before Farwhan, with fame and fortune, overtook her, and perhaps Lotta will manage in time to add to her re pertoire some dramas of equal merit In their way, and enable her to thrust aside such worthless trash as Fire-Fly, repina, and other pieces In which she now appears. The thing Is not an impossibility, but the young lady having attained to fame and fortune without the aid of artistic acecssories, may think the matter one of no Importance. Her appearance in a really good play wonld add to her attractiveness, however, and Increase her popularity with her most enthusiastic admirers. Pepina, the new pleoe which was produced last evening to an Immense and proportionally enthusi astic audience, Is really not worthy of serious criti cism. The author's only object appears to have been to give Lotta two characters which Jare as noar as possible duplicates of "Little Nell" and the "Mar chioness," to lntrodnce as much bone and banjo business as possible, without the slightest regard to dramatic or artistic propriety. There is considerable dialogue about the Board of Brokers, a bond robbery, and various vlllanous transactions, which la not only uninteresting; but Intensely Btuptd, and its only oi Jcct seems to be to lengthen out the drama, and to keep the audience occupied while Lotta Is making her changes of costume. Rumor credits Mr. Edmund Falconer with the authorship of 1'epina. This gentleman has written some very clever ' plays, and Fire Fly, although not entitled to take a high rank in. dramatic literature, has a certain amount of dash and spirit about it which redeems It from contempt, but repina has no redeeming fea ture that we can sec, and it is about the poorest of all the poor plays that have lately been produced. In spite of this, however, there is no fear that it will sot draw crowded houses so long as Lotta personates the heroine, or rather heroines. "Myrtle Myddleton" and "Peplna," we discover at an early stage of the performance, are two sisters, the latter having been stolen when a little child and brought up as a street singer. Lotta Is not good In sentimental parts, and her personation of "Myrtle Myddleton" there fore Is rather flat, and no one Is very orry when that young lady Is carried off the scene by a galloping consumption. As "I'eplna" Lotta is more in her element, and as there Is plenty or slang, kicks, banjo playing, Jig dancing, etc., the audience are proportionally delighted. "I'eplna," or course, Is In the fourth act restored to the arms of her long lost father, who murmurs, "Bless ye, me child," and then hands her over to the custody of "Mr. Percy Lyndon," the quondam lover of "Myrtle," who presses her to his heart as the curtain comes down amid thunders of applause. There are some tolerably good Jokes and hits at ttu manners of the time which the audience is quick to appreciate; but the best thing In the play, to our fancy, is the exciting episode of a street fight, with which the first act concludes, and the bit of satire Involved in the capture of an unoffending apple woman by the policeman after the row has fairly concluded. The City A in internet) ta. At thb Acadkmy of Mcsic the Rlchlngs troupe will appear this evening In Maritana. To-morrow evening The Rom o f Caul He will be given. On Monday evenlnir next Miss Susan Oalton will appear as "Arllne," In The Jiohemian Girl, for the benefit of Mr. 8. Behrens, the musical director. At thb Walnut Mr. John Brougham appeared last evening, to a large audience, as "Terry the Swell," in that singular combination of extrava gances entitled The lattery of Life, with which he startled our play-goers a few seasons ago. This is . one of the curiosities of the sensation school of dramatic literature, and It seems so much like a huge Joke as to be beyond the reach of criticism. ITor Mr. Brougham It has been a genuine prize in the lottery of life, as It Invariably draws crowded houses In this city, and we believe that t has been equally successful elsewhere. It will be repeated this evening. At tub Akch Lotta will appear this evening In 1'epina. The performance on Thursday evening will be for the benefit of the Cuban patriots.
