James Erickson, Lieutenant of the Second district, sworn Iu October, 1808, resided ou S. Second street, in the Second division ot the First ward; voted at the October election: there was a disturbance at the polls that day while I was there; as a person approached to vote, ho was driven away, and two shots were tired at him by the crowd; in the crowd there were about forty or fifty men: a pistol was drawn upon me. and I drew "my revolver and fired in return; a half-dozen weapons were then drawn on me; 1 stepped towards them, and they rushed back wards and turned aud tired again. The witness then recounted that a turbulent time was had at the poll, and that he was several times shot at aud tho fire returned. Counsel for respondents here oflered in evi dence the judges' returns of the First ward, in which no votes are returned lor the r ilih, Eighth, and Ninth precincts. Michael M. Goft testified that he did not vote in the Second division of the First ward in Octo ber last. (His name Is on the list of voters and assessed at Second and Marker streets.) Charles McBrule testified to the election being conducted In tho Second division in a rough manner. He swore that Supreme Court papers were not recognized, and that no vouchers were sworn. Mr. Goff recalled I moved between the two elections, and voted in October at Bouvicr's; I had forgotten the matter, but now recollect that In November I voted iu the Third division. William Irviu testified to the election being conducted irregularly in the Second division, but could not name one illegal vote that was re ceived. Peter and Henry Easterday, and other wit nesses, testified todisorder at the polls in the Second division, and the testimony closed for the day. Tlic Indiati War. Chicago, May 3. The following was received at General Sheridan's headquarters to-dav: Writing under date of March 2S. from Fort Sully. General D. S. Stanley says everything that" lias been done to make peace with the Sioux, as a nation, is an entire lailure, and the Indians are just as lar lrom peace to-day as they were two years ago. The Indians boasted". while near this place, of having killed white men this winter over on the rlatte, and steal ing horses. I believe there are war parties out now to depredate on the line of t lie Pacific Railroad. Their hostility may run on in some way without showing itself only by an occasional "murder, though 1 fear it may de velop in a worse form iu the way of heavv attacks on the frontier. Unfortunately for the ideas of our peace advocates, these Indians sav tlii-v do not want peace: that the whites are alraid of them, which is the reason we send so much lor them to eat; that they will make us leave this country, and will stop the boat on the Missouri river. That portion of the Sioux that were friendly two years ago, have con tinued so. and are' friendly to-day. They have gamed none in their number, and all reports to s . , . i : 1.. ...,1 l. .1. the contrary mat nine uecu nn umi luiumu the country and asserted at Washington are false. . Gents: On the night of the 22d ultimo, ourstoro, No. SO Sonth street, was entered, and a desperate at tempt made by burglars upoa ouo of your sales Iu our conntlnR-room. The key to the safe In which we kept onr sernrltlea wns locked Inside of our fire-proof book safe, tho doors of which were literally cut, to pieces j from this they obtained the key to the other safe and opt-ned IU Fortunately we had one of your Burs;litr-rroof Ranker's ChcRts Inside, la which our valuables were deposited. This they went to work at with a will, aud e vidently used up all their time and tools in vain uttempts to force It. The nljfht was dark and stormy, and the fact of their knowing where our key was kept shows that their plans wi re well matured They tried wedging the door and body of the Chest, and the faithful sure bears evidence of the labor aud skill devoted to the work. All was useless, and it ts with great satisfaction wo report that upon opening It we found our securities all a,fe, and can therefore cheer fully indorse the Burglar-Proof work recommended by yon. You will please send the new safe purchased by ns to our count lug-house, and take the old one, to show that some safes are still manufactured woithy of the iiume. David Dowa fc Co.
