Standard, but pleaflinff, ar.d the operetta, if well
done, ought to become popular. The per formaw c

Won as It otherwlHe would have done. The
indlHimsMou of Mr. Warren While obliged Mr. Kel
leher, the new tenor singer, to afumc the part of
'Monalenr I'arfnif' at a lew hours' notice. As this
is t baritone role, and Mr. Kelleher has a very light
tenor vole, he necessarily appeared under rather
disadvantageous circumstances. Previous to t lie
Opera this gentleman SHng the ballad of "Come Into
the Garden, Maud,'' with considerable expression,
and obtained an encore. His voice Is a very light
but sweet tenor, and we think he will lie a valuable
Addition to the tronpc, especially as he appears to
have considerable ability as an actor.
MlJW Oalton, as "Javotte" sang and acted with her
Osual grace and spirit, and Mr. Wulftln gave a cre
ditable performance as "Landry."
The opera last evening was preceded by a long and
Stupid farce, which tired out the nudlcnce before
the real entertainment commenced. We hope that
something more lively will be substitute! for it
hereafter.

Thk Philadelphia Oprra Company. As our
musical taste increases, so does the talent essential
to maintain it. The above company has been formed
for the purpose of advancing the musical character
of our city, and, if possible, establish an American
claim to a science which, like genius, "knows no
country." The Amateur Drawing Room, a beautiful
as well as classic temple, on Seventeenth street,
above Chesnut, has been selected for the inaugura
tion of the company, on which occasion the comic
opera of The Doctor of Alcantara will be given.
Wednesday evening, April 28, will introduce the
ladles and gentlemen of the Philadelphia Opera Com
pany to the public In connection with this opera, and
when we name a few of those who compose it. we
feel assured that the musical elite of our city will be
on the qui vive to witness it. The cast will be sus
tained by Misses Elene, Frcdonla and Naomi Dnrang,
and Mr. George Bishop, assisted by other talented
artists. The opera and orchestra will be under the
direction of Mr. W. G. Dietrich. Tickets may lie ob
tained at Boner's Music Store, Chesnut street, above

Played while the Lodges formed in lino :
And countless numbers from afar
Came on by steamboat, stage, and car.
The thousands filling up the street.
Dressed in regalia rich and neat ;
And in the distance you could hear
The bugles sounding loud and clear.
The line was formed, and soon the street
Ke-ecuoed sounds of many feet ;
While shout on shout, and clapping hnndn,
Soon joined the music of the bands.
Rich banner to the breeze were flung.
As by this mighty host moved on ;
And many a widow standing by

The Odd Fellows' Ball was a great sucoess.
But another Ball's round that is greater, I gueso.
And a mighty good thing when the burglars' about.
Marvin's Spherical Safe keeps all suoh fellows out ;
Encased as they are in a fire-proof prison,
With bolts setting Vulcan's in quiet derision.
What earthly invention can be so secure,
ho dry in construction, so built to endure?
When cool, daring thievss set the laws at defiance.
Let none place in common defenses relianoe ;
Every man may seoure the best Safe that is inade.H
And the burglar will quickly abandon bis trade;

Thk fine appearance of the Odd Fellows yesterday is a
subject of general comment. Apart frem all banners and
regalias and other adornments, the men themselves, in
their black suits and white vests, made a handsome dis
play. This was owing, of coarse,' first of all to the faot
that they are a body of good looking men, but net, and
contributing hardly less to their fine appearanoe, was tba
fact that the majority of tbem were clad in olothi from
famous Oak Hall.

LETTER OF MESSRS. DAHI) DOWS & CO.
New Yokk, April 10, 1SC9.
IlEKKINO, FAHKEl, & SUEKMAN,
No. 251 Broadway.
Gents : On the night of the 22d ultimo, our store,
No. 20 South street, was entered, aud a desperate at
tempt made by burglars upon one of your sales la our
counting-room.
Tho key to the safe in which we kept our securities
was locked inside of our lire-proof book safe, the
doors of which were literally cut to pieces; from this
they obtained the key to the other safe aud opened
it. Fortunately we had one of your Burglar-Proof
Banker's Chests inside, in which our valuables were
deposited. Thlsthey went to work at with a will,
and evidently used up all their time and tools in vain
attempts to force it. The night was dark and stormy,
and tne fact of their knowing where our key was
kept shows that their plans were well matured. They
tried wedging the door and body of tho Chest, and
the faithful sufe bears evidence of tho labor aud skill
devoted to the work. All was useless, and it is with
great satisfaction we report that upon opeuiiig It we
found our securities all nafe, and can therefore cheer
fully indorse tho Burglar-Proof work recommended
by you.
You will please send the new safe purchased by us
to our counting-house, and tuke the old oue, to show
that some safes are still manufactured woithy of the
nuiiit'. IHvin IKiws X Co.
