A question for debute in keeping with the sub

the women of modern tiineS ?" The discussion
wan spicy, and elicited much applause. Several
took part in it, lnit the negative had the advan
tage decidedly. Fifty-two new members were
elected to the association. The music on this
occasion was furnished by the choir of the West
Arch Street J'rcsbyterlaii Church, under the
direction of Professor Jcun Louis, and added
jcrcntly to the pleasant entertainment of the
evening.

Last evening the concluding ceremonies
attending the Semi-centennial Anniversary of
the I. O. of O. F. were well attended. At Horti
cultural Hall the visiting German Lodges were
entertained by their brethren of this city. At the
Academy addresses were delivered by P. G. M.
William E. Ford, of Boston, Mass.; P. (V. M.
Thomas E. Sniilev, of Tennessee; P. G. M. lie v.
M. Meredith, of Isew Jersey; and P. G. 8. Thomas
SanderS, of New York. At the Kink the ball,
which was a grand success, came off. The Grand
Lodge visited the edifice at 12 o'clock.
The concert given at the Musical Fund Hall
on Friday evening, April 23d, iust., under the
auspices of the choir of Zion P. E. Church, was
eminently successful, taking a large and fash
ionable audience by surprise and pleasure; a
pleasing result, that invokes a public tribute of
approbation to its art amateurs. The conductor
of this concert, we learn, was Mr. Yost, the
organist of the above church, uuder whose skil
ful acquirements, profound musical knowledge,
and practical experience in Europe, this ama
teur feast was produced; Mr. Yost being eminent
as a contrapunto. The ensemble was most
agreeable and effective; to individualize would
be invidious. The overture (Lac des Fee's),
as executed by this amateur orchestra, with its or
chestral arrangements, would have done honor to
any one of our superior professional associations
of instrumentalists of the present era of novel
ties. Violins form the basis of orchestral com
positions, while the unique wind instruments of
advancing mechanical improvements were un
exceptionably developed in tone and artistic
linish, accompanying the chorus and solos with
effective precision of harmonies. liosini's
Ktabat Mater, with the Twelfth .Mass, were most
admirably sung with trutli and feeling gems of
religious music that assist the worship of the
Almighty, to animate the hearer with, holy im
pressions, and thus to raise his thoughts above
(ill earthly considerations. The several soprani,
Ul tenore, the bassi, evinced vocal abilities of
cultivated perfection of qualities rich and full,
with judicious expression of intonation. The
gentleman who sustained the tenor in
titabat Mater (and sung the ''Ex-Maria"
in Twelfth Mass), has an excellent voice,
with a legitimate method; the basso
exhibited a flue voice, with good tuition,
well-balanced divisions of registers in his solo,
"Pro Peccates;' but both seemed uuder nervous
excitement that militated against their powers.
The lady soprano, In "Fra Poco" (Lucia), ac
quitted "herself with good taste in modulation
and chaste ornaments. Indeed, all the soloists
deserve a sprig of laurel to commemorate their
maiden public efforts. The ''Hallelujah" of
Handel was extremely well executed. To bo
brief, to Mr. Yost, as their maesiro, must be
accorded the meed of praise for its brilliant con
summation, whose amiable manners and modest
merits are only commensurate with his profes
sional genius, which never intrudes its jus:
claims.

Statements have recant! v been published in
the newspapers, that tho Government was mak
ing extensive preparations to enforce respect to
American interests in Cuban waters aud. on tho
island, in view of the civil war in progross, and
that, to this end, an unusually large fleet would
be sent tiutner. it lias, however, uc.eti. aitocr

this being the case, tho number of vessels to bo
employed in the public service in that direction

than heretofore in the squadron, the number
being necessarily limited, ow ing to the fact that
Congress has made a very great reduction in the

SPRAGUE VS. ABBOTT.
IWiiIiihI Wrath Kiilmlilcn a ml Pence Diiniicn.
Yesterday morning Senators Sumner and
Sherman called upon Senator Sprague, in order
to suggest a basis of settlement of the difficulty
existing hetween himself and Senator Abbott.
The conversation resulted in Senator Poole join
ing the Senators above named, and producing a
letter from Senator Abbott to Senator Sprague,
of which the following is a copy:
Washington, 1). C, April 2i' To Hon. Wil
liam Sprague Sir: On tho 22d inst., in the
United States Senate, you uttered the followiug
language:
"Mr. President: In answer to the tirade of the
Senator from Nevada, and the Senator from
North Carolina, I am reminded of a little illus
tration. In my travels from the centre here into
the rural districts, through the woods and farms
of the surrounding neighborhood, chance at one
time brought me to a farm-house. I found, on
looking up, a large mastiff aud a mongrel puppy
dog. The little (log moved on me with rapidity
from behind, bit at my heels, and, frightened at
his temerity, ran howMng away, followed by his
larger companion. The Senate will observe' that
the mongrel, w hining puppy, encouraged by the
mastiff, and emboldened to attack from the sha
dow of his backer, ran rapidly away, alarmed at
his temerity, while the overgrown'cur followed
closely after, both ears lopped, and tail betwecu
his legs, to a place of safety beside his menaced
companion.
The latiiniagc has been understood as .meant
in part to be applied to me. I am not aware
that I gave any occasion in my remarks for you
to want to be offensive or insulting in reply! I
therefore deem it proper to ask that you "state
distinctly whether you intended to apply any of
me auovc oucnsive language to mysell. I am,
tir. very respectfully, Joseph 0. Aiiiiott.
In reply to this "communication of Senator
Abbott, Senator Sprague wrote a reply, which
was placed in the hands of Senator Sumner,
who, together with Senators Sherman and Poole.
proceeded to the residence of Senator Abbott,
with authority to deliver the letter upon Senator
Abbott's acceding to certain conditions iu the
nature of a withdrawal of certain language ap
plied to Senator Sprague, and involving a reply
from Senator Abbott to the letter of Senator
Sprnfirue. which renlv was to bo satisfactory
boih to Senators Sumner aud Sherman. The
following repiv was suggested bv Senator Sum
ner, and accepted by Senator Abbott:
WASHINGTON, D. U., April ,20, 1S0J. ItOll. J.
. Abbott, United States Senator: Sir I have
no hesitation iu at once rcplyiug to your note of
this morning, just received, "that the paragraph
ot my speech reicrrcu to was written and m
manuscript some time before it was delivered in
the Senate, and belore you participated In the
debate, and therefore was not intended to apply
to you. Your obedient servant.
w. SPRAGUE.
The following letter, in response to the above.
closed the correspondence in a mauncr satisfac
tory to all concerned:
Washington. D. C, April 20, 1809. Hon.
William Sprague Sir: I have pleasure in
acknowledging your letter of this date, which
shows teat 1 had misconceived your language.
My allusion to you afterwards in the Senate was
founded on misconception, aud I ask you to
consiucr it us uneaiu.
I am, sir, very respectfully,
Joseph C. Atibott.
It may be stated that, on Friday or Saturday,
Senator Anthony called upon Senator Abbot"
and begged him to desist from committing vio
lence on Senator Siarngue. '
