TOE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, THURSDAY, APRIL 22, 18G:. rrmvjsrozuiisraa. From Our Oinn CoTt'Cpondent. Hkw Vomk, Aprt! ft, l ;t. All yesterday morning th Tomb I'oiice court was la a stale of great commotion. All the repre sentatives of the world of 8iirituullxm wero there; and If tho spirits themselves were lialf ns plenty as the auditors In tho flesh, It Hpcaks well for the curl OHlty or the angel-worM. Clairvoyants, tet nioilhimn, mmlical nieilliims, seventh daughter of sovcntu daughters, antroltRlHtn, quarks, fortune tollers, and all the kit and rrew that advertiHe mid follow in tho wake of 8prltuiiUm, wore on linnd, In cluding several dingy beauties in Hioomer coMtume. Judge KdmontU wag almost uh much a cynomire an the memorable Mumlor himself. .sjirituuli.-is from TonghkeepMie, Troy, I'tlca, Home, SysaruHe, Buffalo, Philadelphia, and Ilostnn were on hnndj And on taking hlH sent Justice Dowllng found himself confronted with an andlenee lurjrely roinpoHed of wispy-haired cosmopolitans. II he had been a man Of weak nerves those nerves would not have been strengthen d by the fact of his having received the. previous day a note from a opirittmlMe, Hinlng her self "Amclli V. Ilrooks," who promised (or threat ened) to deliver a few remarks on her hobby (luring the progress of tho trial. No opportunity was given for these, however, and Bloomerlsm was corapeNcd to hold Its tongue. The examination was not nearly 80 Interesting an it had promised to bo, greatly to the disgust of Oakcy llall.whohad had It postponed from .last week solely for his own delectation. There was not murh evidence on cither side. One or two hoary-headed beings gave their evidence that Marn ier had produced phantom photographs, which they bad recognized as tho likenesses of dead friends o." defunct progeny. A great deal was looked for from Judge Kdmonds, bnt that gentleman refused to com init himself, and limited the tenor of his remarks to the announcement that bin attitude towards the phantom photograph question was that of liberality Mr. Jeremiah Uuruey, a photographer of nearly thirty years standing, witnessed that he had neve been able to detect any trickery In Mr. Mumler' operations; aud there being numerous other wit nesses to be heard on both sides of the question, fur thcr examination was postponed mil 11 to-morrow morning at 9 o'clock, at which time Justice Dowling is expected to bring to bear upon it a malutlnully judiclal craftiness. James Maher, the man who was arrested many weeks ago on a charge of complicity In the Kogers murder, was brought np yesterday morning before Judge Cardozo on habeas corpus. District Attorney Garvin stated that he knew no reason why the prisoner should be longer detained, and Maher was accordingly set free. It serves him right, don't you think so, after having been boarded and lodged at a public expense of two dollars per day for the last three months? The case of John S. Young, the ex detective, versus the Police Commissioners, like wise came up in Supreme Court, on an order to show cause why a mandamus should not issue, directing the commissioners to vacate the order of dismissal rendered by them against that functionary. The atlldavits contained no Information whatever that was new, and after reading them the case wax ad journed until next Monday, when the arguments of counsel will be submitted. There Is an etfort being mad; to accommodate the great unwashed with free bath.", at all hours between sunrise and 10 P. M. To that end, it is probable that various points on the Hudson and the Kast rivers and at Central Park will be mutably prepared. A plan having this end in view is to be submitted to morrow evening at room No. 16, in Cooper Institute. This cleanly outburst will be a blessed thing, If it can be consummated. At any rate, a place to flop and float in will just suit the "floating" population. iiuvwmuuiuuiuK mr. v.rixiui.u a jiavniuveiiian ar rangement, the rush of Custom House "beats'' still continues. They never remain the same. Old ones are going, and new ones coming all the time. The countenances are forever changing. Indeed, the countenance of one man has been observed to "change" between bis entrance Into Mr. Grinnell's presence and his exit out of It. Probably Mr. Grin nell has learned how to say "No" more perfectly than any other functionary at present holding oiUce In the United States, for he is employed all tho time In saying it, and still the rosh continues. The Second avenue car strike has terminated. The conductors, drivers, and directors held a mass meet ing at the terminus yesterday afternoon, when a compromise was proposed and accepted. The terms of the compromise are that the drivers resume work according to the new time-table proposed, but that they make only the old number of trips, namely, seven, but that all who choose to make eight trips will receive twenty-five cents extra. Such drivers as do not choose to make the eighth trip will have substitutes provided for that trip. These terms gave general satisfaction. The cars, which had stopped running for the previous day or two, imme diately began again, the directors were cheered, and "drinks all round" trembled in the bulanse. A quack calling himself J. Walter Scott has Just been undergoing an examination at the Mayor's office. If all that is alleged against him be true, he has swindled hundreds of people who are induced to place faith in him through the misrepresentations of a Jbrazen pamphlet entitled "I'nlversity Almanac and Business Book." "Dr." Scott's place of business is styled the New York Medical University, is situ ated at No. 8 University Place, and has the appear auce of a private house. The doctor's plan in his pamphlet is to print as referenct-s the names of per sons, witb addresses annexed, and evidently picked miscellaneously from the directory, with now and then a distinguished name thrown in. According to this pamphlet, General Grant, General McC'lellan Mr. Seward, and, indeed, almost every public man of note, owe their life and health to him. He rescued them from the Jaws of death, and reinstated them in pristine vigor. Ills terms are i00 for a "perfect cure," or the money returned. . Tho first portion of ttiis programme be is never known to fail in execu ting, viz., the pocketing of the f 100. The perfect cure he ultimately effects Js curing his patients of their credulity, and the money goes towards paying the expenses of removal towards another part of tho city, when that particular locality grows too hot to hold him. Madame f'arepa-Rosa appeared last night as rotund In person and as orotund In voice as ever. Stein way Hall was crowded, and the vanity of the singer must have been gratified to the top of its bent by the magnilk-ence of her reception. Such a voice as hers Is of itself a benellceuce to the world, aud there arc amateurs who regard Parepa as a great artistic in. tttructress. I presume she learns In sult'erlug what she teaches In song, and extracts from "rheumatism" what she dispenses in rouladt. What a modest aud charming address, by-the-by, Carl Uosa has on tho stage I He is almost as boyish in "real" life as ho Is in the concert-room.
