91U81CAL. AHtl DKAMATiC. "ttfnrvlTi dn ItrRbnnt." Mr. ami's troupe of French artlHtsmade a brilliant commencement of their geaHon of orxra boutft at tho Academy of Music laHt evening. Tho house was crowded with an enthusiastic audience, the Mnfrora and actors were competent, tho nmnlc was Rood, and the performance was up to a hlh mark of excellence throughout, Genevieve de Brabant la tho most ela borate of the burlesque subjects which Offenbach has net to music, and the extreme leiifrth of the piece la an objection that a little Judicious cutting would ob viate without removing anything that la worth re taining. The plot Is a burlesque npon a touching medlteval tory which has been sung by more than one poet, but as treated by Messrs. Crcmieux and Trefeu it U Frenchified, and some of the salient points are given wtth a broadncAft of humor that la not altogether In accordance with tho strict notions of propriety that hold tn the best Hoclety at the presnut day. Any ob jectionable features, however, In tho piece itself are toned down In tho performance ; and, as given last evening at the Academy, there wua nothing that pru riency could Justly cavil at, while the rollicking spirit of fuu which pervades tho opera won for It the heartiest luughtcr and applause of the large audience In attendance. As a finished musical work, Genevieve Is scarcely equal to either La Grand Ihu-henne or Barb Uleue; but It contains some of the sweetest airs that Offenbach has writ ten, and In some passuges he has surpassed himself. The serenade of tho "Page," "Hn panmnt sou la metre," In the first act, Is a melody that would do credit to composers of far more pretensions than Offenbach, and, as sung by Ma Jumo Koso Hell and Mad'lle Desclauzas, It fully Unserved the rapturous encore which It received. Other air which are scuttered through the opera are bright, sparkling, and in Offenbach's beat vein, and the duet of tho geniarmei in the second act, although not remarkably good of itiaelf, is made one of the features of the piece by the comical manner In which It ts renderod by Messrs. ftourgoln and Francis. This bit of tlrst-rate bur lesque acting and Hinging was honored by a double encore, and many of the audience did not seem dis posed even then to be satisfied. Tho chorus "Le clarion que Sonne," which concludes the first art, li very spirited, ami the grand march for Palestine Is a reminiscence of Barbe Bleu, whUe the train of cars In which "Charles Martel" and his followers are about to embark for the Holy Land is In accordance with the whole spirit of the bnrieeqno. Mr. Orau has a strong troupe, although ho has no actress-singer equal to lrma, nor auy artist equal to Leduc, Lagriil'oul, or Duchesne. Madame Koso Bell, who personated "Drogan," the puge, is tall, hand some, with a clear, sweet, and highly cultivated voice. She acted with a great deal of spirit and established herself as a favorite with the audience from the first. MadUe Desclauzas, the representative of "Gene vieve," is stout but good looking, and her voice, al though not quite so strong as Madame Bell's, is sweet, and ful)y,equal to the reqnlremi uts of the role, M. Carrier, who appvarvd as "Duko Hlfroy," M. Kivenes as "Golo," M. Brokers as '-Charles Martel," and Messrs. Bourgoin and Francis, the representatives of the gendarme, are all excellent actor-singers. In fact, all the parts were well sustained, the choruses were full and well trained, and the whole perform ance was given in a styht of completeness and ele gance that we would be delighted to see imitated by the Italian opera managers. TUe costumes, appoint ments, and mountings of the opera were all hand some and In the best taste, but It is to bo regretted that Mr. Gran did not give us the benellt of his own scenery, which was painted expressly lor this work, instead of that belonging to the Academy, with which all our opera-goers are so familiar that they are beginning to gut a little tired of it. .
