officers of the House. It i further alleged by
mc of the Republicans that the Democrats
desire to take an unfair advantage, by making
the Republican party alone responsible for the
bill, Instead of lending a helping hand to its
passage.
The exact form In which the bill woo defeated
was by the refusal of the Senate to adopt the
report of its conference committee. It is barely
Possible that this refusal may be reconsidered.
Even if the bill should fail, the government will
not stop, although the charitable organizations
would get no funds.
There was much excitement to-day nbont the
revised Tax bill, Imposing a tax on oil, coal, and
whisky, although no efforts were made to pass it
through the Senate. Desperate exertions were
privately made to secure enough votes to ensure
its success. It was engineered by ono of the
most wealthy, shrewd, and energetic men in
Pennsylvania, but there is every prospect to
night that it will be defeated, as the members
fear that its provisions will be unpopular among
the masses. An attempt was made to combine
the strength of the two most powerful railroad
corporations of the State to aid the bill, and, as
nn inducement, a provision was inserted re
lieving the comj anies from taxation. They re
fused, however, to enter into the alliance. The
bill may perhaps be dead, but it is certainly not
yet buried.

Gentlemen: On the nlKlitof the 13th inst., ai Is
well known to tho citizens of Philadelphia, our lanre
and extensive storejaud valuable stock of merchan

The Dre was oneof the most exteiiHlve and de

the heat being so Intense that even the marble cor
nice was almost obliterated.
We had, as you are awaro, two of your valnablo
and well-known CHAMPION FIKE-PROOF SAFES;
and nobly have they vindicated your well-known
reputation as manufacturers of FIRE-PROOF
SAFES, if any further proof had been required.
They were subjected to the most Intense heat, and
It ail'ordB us much pleasure to Inform you that after
recovering them Irom the ruins, we found upon
examination that our books, papers, and other valua
bles were all In perfect condition.
Yours, very respectfully,
JA8. E. CALDWELL & CO.

Gentlemen: On the night of the 13th instant our
large store, S. W. corner of Niutti and Chesnut

papers, entirely destroyed by Ore.
We had one of yonr PATENT CHAMPION FIRE
PROOF SAFES, which contained our principal books
and papers, and although It was exposed to the most
Intense heat for over 60 hours, we are happy to say
It proved Itself worthy of our recommendation. Our
books and papers were all preserved. We cheerfully
tender our testimonial to the many already pub

confidence it justly merits.
Yours, very respectfully,
