The notice of tin) meeting to be held on Satur
day evening last, of the citizens favorable to the
removal of the rails from Uroad street, not hav
ing been very widely circulated, there was but a

and adjourned, in order that a notice -for another

The M. E. Covenant Church, built by Mr.

Saturday afternoon, destroyed 15, 000 worth of

Edwards Pierrepont. the new United States
District Attorney of New York, assumes the
oflice to-day.
The gin-house of Dr. A. A. Kerr, on Big

Forty-nine persons, male and female, have
been discharged from the l'ost Ulliec Department
at Washington.
Heading will furnish one thousand Odd Fel
lows to the great parade, to take place in this

A telegram from Augusta, Ga., says that the
disposition made by Congress of the Georgia
matter gives universal joy.
The different post of the Gi and Army of the
Republic arc preparing to decorate the graves of
' our fallen heroes on the 1st of May.
President Grant will seud to the Senate, to
day a large number of nomination?, including
many for diplomatic and consular positions.
Major Calhoun not having been confirmed ns
Pension Agent for this city on Saturday, the Presi
dent will again renominate him for that position.
A Little Hock despatch states that the
steamer G. A. Thomson truck a snag ncarPiue

' lives were lost.
The German X'atholics of Baltimore fired a
salute of llt'ty guns, on Saturday eveuing, in
honor of the filtiuth anniversary of the Pope's
priesthood.

Cuuard and George F. Nesbit, in New York, on
Saturday, were very impressive and largely

One hundred and forty Swedish emigrants
passed through Concord, N. II., last Friday, for
the Northwest, manv of them beiug destined for

Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel F. M. Follett,
Captain of Company I), 4th United States Artil
lery, committed suicide at Fort Mcllenry, Balti
more, on Friday evening, by shooting himself
through the head.
'I he Police Commissioners of New York on
Saturday were served with an order from Judge
Cardo.o, to show enuse why a w rit of mandamus
should not issue to compel tkeiu to revoke the
dismissal of Captain Young;.
The United States Commissioners appointed
to investigate the East river (New York) bridge
projects, having about concluded their business
there, will next week leave for Niagara. Pitts
burg, and Cincinnati, to report on the bridges at
these points.
The Overlaid Mail Company is now carry
ing the mails betw een the ends of the Union and
Central Paeilie roads, a dislauce of ten miles.

' Madrid, April 11. News has been received
from the frontier that a baud of Caiiists, six hun
dred strong, attacked the town of Leo do Urgel,
in the Pyrcuecs, but were repulsed with heavy
loss, and" lied to the mountains.
Paris, April 10. In the Senate to-day, the
defensive means proposed by the Government
were generally approved. Marshal Niel said it
was the duty of the country iu time of peace to
secure its safety. The army might be placed on
a peace footing, and if it were needed it could
rapidly pass to a war footing.
lu the Corps Legislatif M. de Lavalettc made
a loug and peaceful speech. He concluded with
the follow lug words: "It is the policy of France
to maintain resolutely a dignified peace."
Havana, April 0, via KeyWest, April 10 The
Spanish man-of-war Fernando Cattolica to-day
overhauled the American brig W.zie Major, toil
miles from Caibarien, and took from her two
passengers. Both of these jiersong had em
burked at Havana, and were provided with pass
ports. A report is current in Cuban circles that
the Spanish troops, while conveying a supply of
provisions from Santa Cruz to Puerto Principe,
were attacked and defeated. Intelligence has
been received that the Spanish troops iu the
vicinity of Nuevitas are suffering from sickness.
On the arrival of the steamship Eagle, from Now
York, live Cubans who had taken passage to
Havana were arretted andj carried to More
Castle.
Intelligence haB been received that the Bremen
brig Gcruiania, from New York, bound to Vera
Cruz, was wrecked oil one of the Bahamas. The
captain and crew were saved.
List night there were further disturbances lu
the streets of Havana, and several persons
were killed. To-night, however, the city is tran
quil. Liverpool, April 10 Midnight. The banquet
to Charles Dickens occurred at St. floorge's
Hall, this city, this evening. About seven hun
dred gentlemen sat down, and besides thero
were present many spectators. The hall was
gracefully decorated with Hags and banners.
The proceedings were characterized throughout
with good feeling and emhusiusm. Sir lieury
Houghton and llepworth Dixon, Esq., presided.
After tho usual toasts to England, Lord Dulferin
made a pleasant speech He regretted that
Dickens had not entered tile Held of politic; ho
would have been a power iu the House of Com
mons, a peer of Macaulay.
Lord Lytton at length, in glowing terms, pro
posed tho health of Mr. Dickons, "Mr. Dickens
urose, and with emotion responded. Ho said lie
felt he was unable to do justice to his feelings.
Liverpool, after London, was almost foremost in
bis estimation. She w as always ready to respond,
m.n-handed and spontaneously, muuiflceutly,
to all appeal for aid to art and literature. Ho

celebrated nt Home with great splendor. The

parts of Europe. In the evening tho city was
illuminated.

The Prussian Government has imposed a tax
of one cent and a half on every telegraphic des
patch. An International Universal Exhibition Is to
be held iu Brussels In 1870, and the site Is already
chosen. "
A battalion of German volunteers has been
organised at Rome, which will be commanded
by Prince Liechtenstein.
Considerable augmentations arc ordered In
the various corps d'armee throughout Prussia,
especially In respect to cavalry and artillery.
General Ncrenberger, the director of tho
military school at Brussels, recently committed
suicide by blowing Lis braius out with a pistol. .
On his recall from Florence, Count d'Use
dom was presented by the King of Italy with his
portrait set in diamonds as a token of personal
esteem.
Admiral Caisserly Ahmet Pacha has visited
the Sporades islands with a tleet of Turkish ves
sels, aud seized upon a secret depot of 10,000
stand of arms.
Count Bismark's two sons are to enter tho
army. One Is to join the King's Hussars at
Bonn, and the other the Laucers, now garrisoned
at Hanover.
During the late outbreak at Xercs, In Spain,
073 persons were arrested, and only 183 have
been liberated. The rest are either transported
or still in prison.
Numerous bands of Carlists arc reported to
be stationed near Pou, in France; headed by
Count Barral, and awaiting the signal to cross
the Spauish frou tiers.
Wonderful effects of sound have been ob
tained by manufacturing' bells of aluminum in
France and Belgium. A bell eighteen inches in
diameter scarcely weighs forty pounds.
Very friendly autograph letters have lately
passed between the Emperor of Austria and the
King of Italy, confirming, it is stated, the pro
bability of au alliance between France, Italy,
and Austria.
The new Prussian Ambassador to Florence,
Count Brassier de Saint Simon, Is an intimate
friend to Count Bismark, and is reported to be
anything but friendly iu his sentiments towards
France and Italy.
The Bulletin International of Dresden, a
French paper, has been seized, and proceedings
have been commenced against the editor, Mr.
Walster, ou a charge of high treason against
the North German Confederation.
The French railroad companies are orga
nizing a commission for the purpose of arranging.
the indemnities to be paid to employes wounded
in actual service, uud also the provision to be
allotted to the families of those killed.
King William of Prussia, has presented
General Moltke with a splendid sword, bearing
the inscription, lTe constilium prwbente, Jiax
Victor," in commemoration of tho fiftieth anni
versary of that officer's entry into the army.
The warlike reports are echoed from Italy,
aud heavy preparations for defense are being
made throughout the country. The cloud is ex
pected to burst iu tho course of the. present
mouth, and hints are given that Prussia will open
the ball.
On January 1, 1808, the Russian navy counted
113 admirals and generals, 3035 olllcers, 037 civil
employes, 305 cadets and sailing masters, and
24,084 soldiers aud marines. Of these tho active
service list contained S3 admirals and generals.
300 superior officers, 1518 subalterns, 305 civil
employes, and 21,000 soldiers and marines.
M. Ainedee Gouet, a popular writer and an
editor of the Siecle, recently committed suicide
under the following painful circumstances: His
brother was pronounced so ill that he could not
survive the night, which so affected M. Gouet
that he went into the next room aud stabbed
himself to the heart with a poignard. The next
morning both brothers were found dead.
As a token of the friendly feelings existing
between Italy aud Austria, the Archduke Charles
Louis, the Emperor's eldest brother, telegraphed
the congratulations of all the imperial family to
Prince Humbert, on the hitter's birthday. The
prince replied that it was his most ardent wish'
soon to visit Vienna, and in person tender his
thanks.

They were subjected to the most Intense heat, and

recovering; them from the rulus, we found upon
examination that our books, papers, and other valua
bles were all in perfect condition.

and papers, and although it was exposed to the most
intense heat for over CO hours, we are huppy to say
it proved Itself wortliy of our recommendation. Our
books and papers were all preserved. We cheerfully
