the projector of the lat outrage appeared upon
the scene of action. Yenlerday, howeVi r, wu a

the ground that Its reul purport had not been
apparent when it bad originally been pa-si-1."
We fully concede that repentance is "better late

on their sagacity. Hereafter it may be bet down
a a rule that It is as easy to puzzle u Philadel
phia Senator as it in reputed to be difficult to
puzzle a' Philadelphia lawyer. JWit. Met'and
less, Nagle, nnd Connell have been caught on
the horns of a dilemma, nud they have preferred
to meet their indignant constituents with the
plea that they support laws which they do not
understand, rather than with nn attempt to jus
tify their support of an unjustifiable measure.
Davis, of the House, Beuiiis dinposed die game;

THE COMMUTATION OF fWXTUXCKS.
UovxunOR Geary, in his hint annual message,
referred to six criminals who were confined,
under sentence of death, in the Philadelphia
priaot, but whose execution, iu the judgment of
himself or of his predecessors, was scarcely
proper; and he stated that "It would be botW Just
and merciful to give tho Governor authority to
commute tho sentence of death in the above
named cases to Imprisonment, at labor, iu tie
Penitentiary, for such a term of years as (he
ameliorating circumstances may seem to justify
and demand." Similar recommendations
bad previously been made by other
Governor. and it was natural that
fruch an extension of authority should
be akcd for and granted. Tho Legislature,
however, was too deeply interested in oilier
matters to seriously consider this proposition
until the friends of Gerald Eaton, as it last resort,
concluded that if a law, conferring in general
terms the powers referred to, were passed before
the day fixed for his execution, his life could be
fHved.-tThe appliance they brought to bear
proved effective, uud a law was sent to the Gov
ernor On Wednesday last, granting him not only
the powers asked for in his last annual message,
but the privilege of exciting similar auMiority
in other similar cases. Singular to y,
this act has been vetoed and the, Legislature h'is
been solemnly lectured for goiag a step beyond
the strict letter of their instructions. They are
now told that "there id a titness In giving this
additional discretion to tho Oovernor." thut "the
law furnishes abundant security to crinfmals, us
well a opportunities for new trials." that "the
commutation is an exercise of judicial discrimi
nation," and that "it Is unjust to the Kiccu'lve
to compel him to retry every case; it is unju I to
the courts and juries to expose their solemn tiud
lugs to such irresponsible re-examination.' Ail
thi. reasoning may bo very profound, but it Is
ctiiicult to see why, if it was right to aiuhori.e
the Governor to commute tho sentences of Edward
Kord, Patrick Flnnegan,New ton Champion. Alfred
Alexander, and Hester Vaughan, it was so dread
fully wrong to permit him to exercise similar
powers in other cases. As the law now stands,
no man can be hung until the Governor issues a
warrant for his execution, nud when he chooses
to defer this task, from time to time, on account
of extenuating circumstances, tho continued im
prisonment becomes a punishment which, as
Governor Geary stated in his nnuual message,
"with the additional embitterment constantly
preying upon the mind that a death-warrant may
at any moment be issued, is perhaps tho severest
that could be inflicted."
Hon. Leonard Mvkus was yesterday declared
entitled to the sent in the National House of
Representatives from the Third Pennsylvania
district, and Mr. John Moffet was accord
ingly ousted and Mr. Myers sworn in. This
action of the House, after a careful investigation
of the case by the Election Committee, effectually
defeats the machinations of the Democratic
inanagors, by which it was expected that the
people of the Third district would be cheated
out of their legally chosen Kepresciitajive. No
one really doubts that Mr. Myers did receive a
majority of tho legal votes cast, and it Is grati
fying to know that the enormous frauds prac
ticed by the Democracy were of no avuii la this
instance at least.

vi:rv fcU'vessi'ul season of grand opera Is to be
billowed by u season of op-va bnvffr, just ss the farce
follows the tragedy. Tho attendance at the Academy
ilurinT the pf rformsneea of the hist, two weeks Indi
cated very clearly that Oifenbach's lively strains, aud
(he comic singing and anting of the faiuc artists
who have appeared during the past I wo winters at
the Academy of llui', have not vitiated the public
taste, or made our opera-goers insensible to the
charms of "good' muse. Indeed, a genuine
lover of music will not. allow. hbi
enjoyment to I e disturbed by theories of any
kind, but he will be eipia'ly ready to appreciate light
or heavy music, comedy or tragedy, provided it is
good of its kind, ami the opera btitufe performances
of next weeK will doubtless attract, the same class of
Indies and gentlemen as assembled to hear the woilvs
of, Mozart, liounod, Donizetti, and Verdi Interpreted
by such artists as MLss Keliogg, Madame La Orange,
Miss Mi'C'ulioch, fsgnor Koncoul, .Signur Autonuecl,
and hignor Orlandini.
Mr. J. Urau wili commence his season on next
Wednesday under very rnvorablo auspices. He will
produce a number of works by (ul'enbach and other
composers thut have not been witnessed by our
opera-goers, and he will Introduce to us some artists
vl;o have won tirst-ciass reputations In other cities.
It is prom Lied that the various operas will be brought
eut in very handsome style, with magnificent scenery,
costuiius, and appointments, and that all the details
which Hdd so much to the eil'ect of performances will
be attended to In the most careful manner. The
chorus will be um'sualiy large and effi
cient, ami, as on additional attraction,
we are assured that it wili pre-ent an array of beauty
i-nch us hes never been seen before on the stage of
the Academy. This will be an alt ruction indeed, for
chorus singers are usually distinguished for anything
bnt Uiiuty. It ha.s been the. elegance and good taste
with which the bvufft npcnui have been placed on the
singe heretofore that have contributed more than any
thing else to their mi. -cess, und Mr. Gran promises to
surpass all former efforts iu this respect.
2 In addition, to the opera bouffe, our music-loving
citizens ure to be treated to another operatic novelty
in the performances of the Philadelphia Opera Com
pany. This company is organized for the purpose of
eucourngUig and developing native talent, uud they
will give their lirst performance at the Amateur
Drawing Koom, on Seventeenth street,iiboveCliesnut,
on Wednesday evening, April Vis. On this occasion
Itteliberg's comte opera of Tht Ihielor of Alcantara
will be presented, with the following artists In tho
cast: Misses Klenie, Predonia and Naomi Durang,
Mr. (ieorge BLshop, and others. The orchestra will
be under the riireetlon of Mr. W. U. Deitrich. This
enterprise Ls deserving ol the encouragement of our
citizens. It Ls promised that every care will be taken
to produce the operas In the besi si vie, and we hope
that the performers will receive all the encourage
ment llicy deserve.

& VII.SON have bo powerfully reduced tha expense of
clotli'.ng boys, it cobtb abtmt aa machtoclothe two hoys asit
ut-ed to clothe one. Therefoie it is quite au object to hove
a pair of twins in the family.
Twins can wear each other's clothes, or their own, a they
prefer. Sometimes it happena tlutt when one twin's
clothes are getting somewhat worn, the other twin rises a
little earlier iu the niomiii, and got the best clot hoe.
Twins can say each other's lessons at avhool, which ia
also a great convenience, aa one lesson will do fur a whole
pair.
No mere at presfcnt on the subject of twins except thw
one thought : -
URINC. ON VOCH TWINS !
Present them at the door of the OR HAT Itl'.OWN II ALL,
and thoy will be courteously treated, well tilted, au.l in
every lespect made to enjoy complete satisfaction whether
they are of the Siamese variety or not.
