t TIIE DAILY EVENING TELEGKAPn PHILADELPHIA,-WEDNESDAY, APRTL 7, 18G0. A IiIVCLTT gimp. n;vtn.,!r,'nla, A,"-ut " " u Tho crowd ii-ually assembled nt the Vnshnir ton depot iU the dejmrture of the train for Bulti nioro, nt noon yesterday wi- tlirown Into con siderable excitement by the report of a pistol fired in tho ladles' car. A rush was mado for the scene of commotion. It appears that Mr. E. Dorsny Etchison, formerly coinmcrelal agent at WaUnioros, who left that place for Canada, where he has resided for three or four years pan, came on hero two or three days ago, and this morally with his daughter took eeats In one of the cans of the train then about to Btart. Shortly after he was seated he was approached by Colonel W. . R. Lount, formerly of Tennessee, but now of this city, who, tappluff him on the shoulder, said, pointing to a friend who hud accompanied him: "This is my friend, Cuptain John Nye, and I have called with him to see why you havo been polng about the city threatening to kill me on fight. I have done nothing to you, and would like to sec you outside tho car for an explana tion." Mr. Etchlson rose from his seat as if to accompany them, .and Colonel Lount and Cap tain Nye, brother of the Senator, turned to leave the car. It appears as the partr moved out Colonel Lount, who was walking fa advance of Etchison, suddenly looked round and found a pistol pointed at his back, lie had but the alternative of warding off tho shot. Lount turned quickly, and In throwing up his arm the pistol exploded, the ball taking effect in the left hand, breaking tho finger. Lount planted his fist upon Etchison 'g nose, smackjng the bridge and knocking the individual down. Lount then ecized the pistol, and catching Etchison by tho throat, put tho pistol at his head, remarking, "You scoundrel, you ought to have your brains blown out, but I spare your life for tho sake of your family." Tho employes of tho car eclzed the combatants and were about to sepa rate them, meanwhile two policemen appeared nud took the parties into custody. There were a number of ladies in the car. It may be Ima gined that they were not in tho most Bcrenc state of mind, not a few taking an opportunity to give vent to their feelings. Etchison, during the combat, accused Colonel Lount of improper conduct with his wife, who has for three or four years past lived a portion of the time in Canada, but a greater part of tho time here, boarding at the Bame house with Colonel Lount. Colonel Lount claims that he was unarmed except with his walking stick. The parties were taken to tho station house. Lount was released on parole and Etchison held for a hearing. At 6 o clock this evening the cose came up before Justice Wal ters. Etchison was present, his face in a very dilapidated condition, and was supported by two lawyers. After some prelimi nary conversation outside, the case was called up. Tho Justice asked Lount whether ho had any charges to make. lie replied he had none. A policeman then remarked that the re port of a pistol was heard In tho car. Lount re plied that a plntol was heard to explode, but he thought that tho person who held the tveapou was too much of a coward to fire it; so he sup posed it went off by accident. Tho whole affair terminated in smoke. Etchison will leave for Memphis, Tenn., at once. iV. Y. Herald. John IBrlght la Ofllce. Mr. Bright, in answering questions in Par liament, in kis oharaoter of President of the Board of Trade, unites in a marvellous degree the freedom and boldness of the popular tribune with the oaution of the Government offlciaL The remarks with whloh he aooom- 5 antes his direct reply would, in the old Whig ays, hare made Lord John Russell's hair ' stand on end; and as to Sir Robert Peel bat the thought of what he would hare done ia too appalling to be pursued. A olose observer of Mr. Bright, a writer who ia in the House of commons every evening, says tnat more and every day the right honorable gentleman I mellows into exeelleuoy and originality as a minister 01 state. He is by nature or by habit peremptory in his manner and paaseology. These attributes he retains, with a dilTerenoe; for, though they are used with maoh effeot for the purpose of offiolal "ending off," they are tempered by a tone of conciliation, whloh makes him pleas ing even to postulants whoso requests, direot or indireot, he is obliged to refuse, and that with preoision. Then, too, his humor is always at his call, and is infused into his answers, and the little speeohes he has made with as muoh Judgment as effeot. Somehow, too, the presence of Mr. Bright e'zerclses an insensible influence on the oonduot and de meanor of his colleagues, even of the very highest. It may well be taken that the knowledge of his keen polltioal powers, his contempt of fusslness and shuffling, and all the lower arts of officialism, to say nothing of his arowed intention to "show up" his oolleagues whenever they deserve it, must operate on that body generally and indivi dually. At a oonferenoe recently held in Alezan- dria, Va., Bishop Ames, of the U. . Church, stated as his belief that "tobaoao was doing more harm to the Churoh than whisky." The inauguration of Oeneral Grant was 1 eelebrated at between eighty and ninety dif ferent places in Germany. The best poets of the Fatherland recited poems on the oo- easion.
