THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, FRIDAY, APRIL 2, 1869. J BUS1CAL AUD dramatic. Frnftnl" at (he Academy of Manic. lt evening a striking proof ot the popu larlty of tne Italian opera in this city, and ef the hearty encouragement vowonsafed Its man ftgement, wag afforded. Ernani was advertised, tout the public ws kept in total Ignoranos wltU regard to the east. Yet the andlenoe was qnlte as large as on the opening night, and as entau Blastloas the merits of tbe performance war. ranted. Miss States appeared In the role of TKlvlra," which Is Justly regarded as the best personation which she bus yet given In this City. Tbe harsh quality of her voice was com pensated for by the ease with which she glide 1 through the highest ranges of her soore; and her action, taken altogether, was spirited 'though somewhat marred by an occasional Ustlessniei. Blgnor Maccnforrl was entrusted With tbe role of "Ernani," and went through It conscientiously, but failed to reach tbe stan dard to wbloh we have been aooustomed In the past. Slgnor Orlandlnl, who has appeared be fore In the charaoter of "Carl Qulnto" to the beet advantage, unhappily did not exooute his task with the grace and force which we are aooustomed to enoonnter In his personations. All these -shortcomings, however, were more than compensated for by the masterly per formance of Blgnor Antonnool as "SUva." The pnbllo has beoomejustlfled In anticipating an unrivalled execution of this part at bis hands, and last evening there was no oanse for dlsap polntment. Despite an apparent weakness in the chorus, the concerted pieces were well and forcibly rendered. This was especially the case In the grand finale of tbe third act, on tbe score of wklob Verdi has exbausted bis resources o brilliancy. The execution was so satisfactory to the andlenoe that a repetition was Impera tively demanded, and given with Increased spirit. Thus far, however, tbe company have been engaged in mere skirmishing, and to night, wbea Meyerbeer's grand production Le Prophete, will be placed on a Philadelphia tage for the first time, they will go to work in sober earnestness, with Just anticipations of a decided triumph. - Sirs. Thayer's Benefit at the Arch. Mrs. Thayer's admirers could scarcely have paid her a greater compliment than they did last evening, for althougb, according totradl- - Hon, there is always room for one more in a street car or a theatre, the house was so full that the audience overflowed Into the lobbies; and tbe old simile of herrings In a box soaroely gives an adequate idea of the actual condition of affairs. Mr. Thayer presented an excellent bill of entertainment, the performance passed Off with a great deal of spirit, to the manifest satisfaction of the audience, and the benefit was a gratifying success to all the parlies con cerned. The leading attraotlon of the evening was the lively and entertaining comedy of Everybody's Ttriend, wbloh was presented for the first time this season; Indeed It has, we believe, been a great many seasons since it was played at the Aroh. Everybody'! Friend is an amusing, half faroioal piece, which manages to keep its plaoe - on tbe stage principally on account of the merits of "Major Wellington Da Boots." Mr. John 8. Clarke, if he did not create this char aoter, has at least absorbed it and made it so completely his own that any other comedian attempting it must, in a great degree, appear simply as a foliewer in his Illustrious foot steps. Mr. Craig played the part very well Indeed last evening. He missed some good points that Clarke makes, and was not as exoruolatlngly funny; but be achieved a very fair snooess. ' Mrs. Thayer, as "Mrs. Do Boots," was admirable, as she always is. There is soaroely an actress on the stage who understands the art of dressing charaoter like this lady; and in such a part as "Mrs. Msjor De Boota" she appears to signal advantage. Although circumstances beyond their control have brought the "Major" and his wife to the foreground In this piece, they are properly, and aocordlng to the original in tention of the author, but seoondary person ages. The others, upon whom the devolopment of theplot mainly depends, are amusing comedy characters, but not distinguished by any such marked idiosyncrasies as to raise them above the common run of humanity. The parts were very oredltably sustained last evening, as fol lows: "Felix Featherly," Mr. Barton Hill; V Mr. Ioebrook," Mr. James ; " Mrs. Featherly," Miss Price, and "Mrs. Bwansdown," Miss Da venport. The farce of Domestic Economy, In whloh Mrs. Thayer appeared as " Mrs. Urunaley," and Mr. Craig's burlesque of Romeo and JaMei.couoluded the entertainment. Vhe City AmnsementM. At tbi Academy or Musio Meyerbeer's grand opera of Le Prophets will be produce! this evening, with new costumes, scenery, ac cessories, laud a full chorus. The oast will be as follown -"Fides." Madame La Uranee: "Ber tha," Miss McOuiloch; "John of Leydon," Slgnor iJoeui: "i ouniuDeriuBi.'uerr rormei; "j onus," Herr llabelmann; "Matalsen," Blgnor Barlll; "Zaoharla," Blgnor Antonuooi. A ballet by M'lle Wesmael and M'lle Zaoootl will be intro duced. To-morrow evening Le lrophete will be given for the last time. The first grand matinee will be given to morrow. On Monday Fautt will be performed, with Miss Kellogg in tbe role of "Marguerite." At tub Akch Htiakespeare'a comedy of Twelfth Night will be performed this evening for tbe last time this season. A handsome testimonial, prepared by some of Air. jsveriy a personal ana proiessionai mends, will be presented by Colonel James Pasre. Business Changes The last ten, or even tbe last five, years have seen more rapid aud more extensive changes in business locations than any other period since the foundation of the city. The wholesale establishments have to a great extent monopolized Market street, and ire threatening the rear of the retailers, who are rapidly pushing their advanced lines up Chesnut street, to the dismay of the old resi dents beyond Broad street, who ten years ago fancied themselves secure against any intru sion. One of tbe most extensive Market street establishments is the great Clothing House of John Wanamaker, at me corner of Sixth street. This house Is about to make a move that will mark a new era la the business of rhUAiloJrHl. Ia oUlea times trade had UaMt ofsklpplug every other street running north and south, but now they are all being oooupled, and it seems not impossible that before many years all of the original city of William Penn.from Vine to South streets and from the Delaware to the Fchuylklll, will be given up to business purposes. Recently many of our most promi nent mercantile nouses have moved their quarters and established themselves inelegant stores upon Chesnut street. These structures are architectural ornaments to the city, ani are gratifying evidences of business enterprise. The latest move of this kind is that made by Mr. Wanamaker, who will in a few days open a branch house at Nos. 818 and 8i0 Chesnut otrcet, In tbe large brow n-s tone building lately occupied by Homer, Colladay & Co. This mea sure will largely Increase Mr. Wana maker'a business facilities, it will be an accommodation to customers, and Is a commendable evidence of mercantile enterprise. In New York the system of branch bouses is quite common, some of tbe largest establishments bavlngseveral in various quarters of the city. Philadelphia oovors a much greater area than New York, and the same system might very advantageously be Introduced here. Market street is usually looked upon as tbe fclronghold of wholesale dealers, and those who purchase large quanti ties of goods naturally go there, while retail purchasers are more likely to drop In at a Ches nut street store. Tbe advantage of at least two places of business for an establishment Hire that of Mr. Wanamaker is thereforo apparent. Business Is extending itself north and south as well as east and west, and the probabilities nre that before another ten years pass by still greater changes and Improvements will have taken place; end we should not be surprised if, before that time, Mr. Wanamaker had at least balf-a-Uozen branch nouses, where he would supply ready-made clothing at the lowest prices.
