John M. Biuckley, indicted for an assault
and battery on Thos. K. Harlaud, Deputy Com
missioner of Internal Revenue, submitted hts
case to the Criminal Court in Washington yes
terday. Mr. Binckley stated that this was the
first time that he had ever been arraigned, and
that the provocation which led him tu commit
the- act was very great, ana the prosecuting
witness had acknowledged his connection with
the publication of the letter which had done
him great injury 4n character and reputation.
Judne Wylie said the provocation was very
great, ana the archives of the Government did
not furnish a similar case. Such letters should
not be written, and it was wrong to publish
them; bat Mr. Binckley should have known his
legal remedy, and he would, therelore, sentence
blm (o pay a tine ot one hundred dollars and
eosts.
