who was arrested last week on a cuargo of
pocket picking;, and hold to bo.il by Alderman
Kerr foi a hearing; yesteidity at the Central S;a
tlon, did not make his appearance at the time
specified, and the rocrtpuizntice was forfeited.
W. J. Htcvenson and Isabella Hamin were the
nail. The prosecutor of Corson represents that
he attempted to pick his pocket in one of the
ftrect cars, and afterwards at the Uulon Bunk,
Third Bnd Arch streets.
John Whalen. a hucks'er. was chareed
before Aldei man Kerr, yesterday afternoon, with
not Rlvim? proper measure. Mr. I'aul J. Field
testified that a Mr. Prown purchased for him of
defendant three bushels ot potatoes at $1 per
bufchel. When defendant called for his money
Mr. Field asked him if the potatoes ran sixty
pounds to the bushel, and was answered in the
affirmative. When witness reached home ho
well; lied the potatoes and round that the threo
bushels only aggregated 140 pounds. Whalen
Was held to bail to answer.
The taking of teitimony In tho contested
election case of Caleb N. Tailor, nonius t Dr.
Reading-, who claims to have been elected to
Concretson tho Democratic ttcket from the
Fifth dis'rict, at the latt election, was com
menced before Notnry Puolic Abraham Stewart
yesterday. jt his office, Clearfield street and the
rrankicrd roitct. The evidence eliciied was in
favor of the contestant. Mr. Taylor, and was
d rected to the Fourth division ot the Twenty
fifth ward. Mr, J. Alexander Simpson appeared
as counsel for Mr. Taylor and Mr. Charlei W.
Carriffan for the respondent, Dr. Reading.
Jacob Trexler, alias John Edwards, had a
final hearing; before Alderman Kerr, yesterday
afternoon, charged with obtainiug money Dy
false representations. He represented himself
as an agent of benevolent institutions, and
agent for the Guardians of the Poor, and would
call upon poor fumilics and promise to send
them cosl. groceries, etc., but in every in
stance would demand $2 to pay for the haul
ing; of the property. The additional witnesses
against him yesterday were Mary McAnany, re
siding; in Cameton place, and Lizzie Rash,
living at the Falls of Schuylkill. From these
persons he secured $1 by his lalee representa
tions. Trcsler was committed for trial.
The following persons were admitted to the
Hospital yesterday, injured as stated:

the depot of the West Philadelphia Passeuger
Railway, was kicked on the hip by a horse.
i Catharine Byan, aued fiftv eight, residing; at
No. 80!) Donnelly street, above Christian, tell
on the curbstone on Crease street, between
Fifth and Sixth, and injured her feet.
A child named John Garrigan, whose parents
ret id e at Mo. 923 Reed street, was run over at
' Passyunk road aud Reed street, and had his
legs broken.
Ann Mann, ajed th'rfy-e'aht, residing' at No.
014 Lombard street, injured herself by ruptur
ing an artery, and bled quite profusely from the
wound.
A meeting of the Phila lelphla TractMission
Society for the First district was held last nkiht
at the North Presbyterian Church. Bixth street,
above Green. Rev. Francis Kebdricts presided.
This society is directed by managers from the
different, Evangelical churches of this city and
eight missionaries. It circulates monthly 60,000
English, 8000 German, 141 French, 4 Spanish,
and 1 I tali, in tracts, over about two-thirds of
the city; 6000 monthly to the shipping on the
Delaware and Schuylkill rivers. It invites,
through its visitors to the houee of God ; gathers
childreu to babbath and other schools;
furnishes the Bible to the destitute; visits the
sick, and relieves their bodily and spiritual
wants; aids in the temperance reform; secures
a better observance of the Sabbath, and holds
religious meetings among the poor, it endea
vors, in the spirit of the Gospel, to carry out its
teachings. It needs funds to enable it not only
to carry en the work, but to extend its tract
aud missionary operations throughout the city.

A steam elevator at Brooklyn, yesterday,

Captain John S. Young, Chief of the New
YorW detective force, has been dismissed the
service.
Tne loss by the destruction of the Cascade
Puper Mills at Pen Yan, N. Y will reach
$125,000. Insurance only $50,000.
Michael Kehoe, charged wuh murder, was
yesterday acquitted In Baltimore, on the
grounds of acting in self defense.
A large meeting was held at Cincinnati last
evening in behalf of General William G. lialpin,
now confined in a British prison.
A coal car ran over an embankment yester
day in West Pittsburg, aud landed In a rolling
mill, killing one boy and fatally injuring
another.
Heavy gales are reported as having prevailed
off the coast and in the Chesapeake Bay within
a day or two. Seveial ship, aud tchoouers suf
fered severely.
A Richmond despatch states that an expedi
tion of ex-Federal and ex Confederate officers
and men has arrived in Cuba tor the parpjse of
aiding the revolutionists.
,' Foreign Affairs.
Havana, March 22. Dates from St. Thomas
sre to the 16ih. The schooner Susan, from Mew
York for Cadiz, with petroleum, put In, leaking
badly. The British brig Sisters and British
barque Rapid were wrecked, and became a
total loss. The former lost four of her crow
drowned.
At the request of the Captain General of
Porto itico tne Danish amuoriues nai Danisnea
lrom Bt. Thoma9 Doctor Betances, or Mayagua,
who was suspected of being engaged in organ
izlng an expedition agalust the Spanish colo
nies. Passports were Bent to the doctor, but he
refused to leave the island, assuming that the
action of the authorities was illegal. He claimed
Ills right to remain on the grouud that he was a
citizen of the United States, and In thi9 he
seems to have been supported by the Americas
Consul, who protested against the doctor's
banishment. The atiair causea mucn excite
ment, and a settlement was anxiously looked for.

Prince to March 11 has been received. Presi
dent Salnave's pickets were besieging Jacmel,
while the Insurgents had comraensed to besiege

Salnave arrested some two hundred merchants
in Port-au-Prince, and ent them to Gonalves to
reiniorce the garrison.
A change has been made in the President s
AlSconvenUon has been concluded with
France, by which the latter is 10 receive twelve
per cent, of the revenues to wards the payment
of her claims. Vessels are allowed to enter all
ports of Hayti, and discbarge and load mer
chandise, provided those bound to porta in the
hands ol the rebels previously report nt a wjai

address to the citizen volunteers.
Havan a, March 22. The Captain General will
bold a review of all the troops In and around
Havana to-morrow.
In a skirmish near Trinidad, the icbd Gene
ra) Schmidt was killed. Two more plantations
In that jurisdiction have been destroyed by the
rebels.

Manicaragua and Porruco Galanu wero burned
by order ot Cabadii.
The Drensa reports that tweuty-flve insur
gents, most of thim of high rank In the rebel

The cfto newspaper, of Matanza, professes
to have received intelligence that Fl;rcnclo

Revolutionary Junta at Villa Clara, will follow
his example, provided their lives bo spared and
they be guaranteed a sale conduct to some port

Havana. March 22. Advices from St. Do
mingo to the 10th lust, have been received.
There was the appearance of comparative
quietness around the capital, but arrests and
efoutions continue to be ot frequent occur
rence. In the extreme eastern part of the
Island, the Insurgents were very troublesome,
and the Government had found it necessary to
declare martial law in the Province of Seibe,
Kr. Faben?, the special commissioner of the
Dominican Government at Washington, carries
witrrT)iin instructions to rent the Bay of
Samana to the United States. Ho is very reti
cent on the subject, and no other partictilard as
to the object ot his mission can be obtaluod.
At Porto Rico, on the 17th Instant, the sugar
market was greatly excited. The Governmeut
bus Imposed additional export duties of $3 per
hhd. ou uear, 65 cents per hhd. on molasses,
and CO cents per quintal ou coffee, and 20 cents
per quintal ou tobacco.
New York, March 22. A special Trom Bt.
Domingo, ot the 101b, says: General Duperon
and others arrived on the Telegrafo, at Porto
Plata. The authorities threatened to shoot
tteni if they landed. They proceeded to St.
Marie, where they remained at last accounts.

Conference reassembled at 3 o'clock yesterday,
and was opened with devotional exercises by
Rev. John tfuth.
Rev. J. Turner read the memoir of Rev.
Daniel George, which was adopted.
The Committee on the Tract Enterprise pre
sented the following resolutions, which were
adopted:
1. We recognise the importance of tract dis
tribution as a quiet but powerful instrumen
tality, in the hands of pastors and churches,
in caving bouIs.
2. VSe are gratified with the success of the
plans adopted for tract distribution, by which
2,300,000 paecs ot tracts have been distributed
this year, and earnestly recommend the hearty
co-operation of all our ministers aud people iu
this work.
3. That a tract collection be taken in all our
churches.
4. That the thanks of this Conference are due
and are hereby tendered to Rev. S. VV. Thomas
for the efficient manner in which he has dis
charged the duties of his office, and to the
Board of Managers and Executive Committee
for the laithtnl and efficient management of the
trusts confided to them.
5. That we commend the Methodist Book
Rooms, No. 1018 Arch street. Philadelphia, to
our members and friends as worthy of their
confidence and patronage.
C. We recommend the reappointment of Rev.
P. W. Thomas as Agent and Corresponding
Secretary of the Philadelphia Conference Tract
society.
The following report was submitted by the
Committee on Church Extension, uud was
adopted:

to God for the disposition which He has given

exhort all our churches to increased liberality

Resolved, That we cordially endorse and com
mend the loan scheme of the society, the design
of which is to raise a fund amounting to $500,000,

Rev. Mr. Hudson, chairman of the Committee
on Preachers' Aid S xiiety, presented a draft of
a constitution aud by-laws for the government
ot such a society, which Is designed to aid all
worn-out preachers. It provides for the eleetlou
ot a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Trea
surer, and Board of Trustees, and that the
Society shall be incorporated, having all the
privileges of kindred charitable and benevolent
associations. The report was adopted.

Contested Election Case.
Before Messrs William P. Messick and R. M.
Batturs. examiners appointed to taketestimouv
in the contested election cases, the following
witnee?e9 were exaraiLed yesterday:
Rev. John D. Long sworn 1 am acquainted
with the property No. C24 South street; it
belongs to the Bedford Street Mission; thero was
no one living there last October; the houses on
that lot were burned down last August. (Henry
Florheim Is asFesed at ro. C24 South street;
No. 125 ou one list of voters, and No. 137 on the
otner.)
Mrs. Maria Cresswell sworn I resided at No.
732 South Sixth street last October; I knew
James Lytcb; I do not know his busiuess; I
do not know where he is at present; 1 have not
seen him lor two months, or perhaps longer;
he boarded at my house about six weeks: he
left there. I think, about two weeks before the
October election. (James Lynch is No. 138 on the
list of voters, and in the extra assessment is No.
732 South Sixth streel.)
Geoiee S. Craighead sworn I voted the full
Republican ticket in the Seventh division of the
Fourth ward at the last October election.
(George8. Craighead is assessed at No. 700 South
street, but is not on the list of voters. )
John is. Michaels sworn i lived at No. 717
Shippcn street last October: 1 went to the polls
twice in the Seventh division of the Fourth
ward on October election day and offered to
vote, but my vote was not received; I moved
into the Seventh division of the Fourth ward
last August; I was challenged when I attempted
to vote; I procured a voucher for my residence;
it was Mr. Patrick Mean, my next door neigh
bor; the man outside the window would not
allow Mr. Mean to get up to the window to
vouch for me; I looked round to call him up
to the window, when I saw him getting up
out of the gutter, with blood on his face; I
went away then and returned about half-past
three o'clock, and tried to vote agalu; I had
no voucher with me the second time; they
told me at the polls that If I did not go away
they would put a head on me; I left.
Cross-examination I do not know the man
who challenged me: It was not the man who
had the window book; I never voted iu that
division before; I have beeu a votr for sixteeu
years.
Re-examined When I left tho polls to get
Mr. Mean to vouch lor me, several men followed
me, and some of them offered ine a Democratic
ticket, telling me if I voted it I would have no
difficulty in getting it iu.

After the close of our report yesterday the
following was doue in tho House of Represen
tatives: A bill respecting the election for member or
delegate to 'Congress was made tho fpecial
order for to-morrow. The report of the confer
ence committee on the concurrent resolution to
create a Committee on Retrenchment wa9 agreed
to. Among the bills passed was one abolishing
