The resignation of Mr. 8iewart Is of course
fee chief topic of conversation alike in bank
fflcesand breakfast parlois at least It was
esterday morning. To day A. T. 8. sinks Into
comparative Insignificance, lie 'besomet the
rone man Instead of tbe covin? man, and all
eyes are turaeJ In tbe direction of this latter
monstrosity, ready to ftloat upon him with
affectionate triumph whenever ho shall be
pleaded to pat In an apoearanee. By the by,
what a capital editorial that Is in the World
to-day, .entitled. ''Mr. B ewart's Grand
Charity," and dwelling noon tho piety and
munificence of that shrewd seller. If charily is
cold, I am. sure he stands belo zero, and
perhaps that is prci ely the man we ought to
have had for tbe Secretary of tho Treasury.
Tbe landlords threaten to raise their rents
with the 1st ot Miji wblch case there will be
a grand exit ol between fifty and one hundred
thousand people from New York. Rents are
already higher than people of limited locoues
ccn very we.l stand, llowcver "straitened"
the tenant's means may be, the landlord
Is always devising a "crookeder" path
for them to flow into. The tew York
"1st cf Mav" sjstem, by the by, is ono of
the most unbearable S3 stems that was ever
Invented in tho memory of man. Such a grand
transformation scene as is wltucjsed then, In
every other residence of suburb and city, was
never equalled in the hUtory of the spectacular
stage from the era of the Black Crook down to
that of Bumpty Jhimpty. And there is no reason
why the system adop.ed in lariro cities abroad
by which a tenant is at liberty to leave his
house at any quarter of the year, should not be
put into successful vogue here. More than
anything else, it would have a tendency to
demolish the first of May movement, which Is
jnoie of an All Fool's Day, when looked at in
tnat light, than the first of April ever was.
The anticipated rite in rents is preparing many
a family of moderate means to look out for
homes for themselves in Westchester county,
New Jersey. Long Island, and the score of
suburbs whose locus New York. Year after
year thousands of our people, who hoped to live
and die with the Gotbatn atmosphere of their
nativity around them, have been compelled to
radiate away from this fascinating focus, and
Wy their heads at night upon pillows very
remote from the central metropolitan mansions
where they were established in their palmier
days. And matters have reached now such a
crisis that any farther rise In rents will distri
bute among the environs at least seventy-five
thousand people whose utmost struggles at pre
sent just enable them to "live decently."
The scavenger murderer whom 1 mentioned
In mv last has been examined by the coroner
and held to answer, and a mysterious woman
has Incontinently died from tbe effects of lager
not laudanum. The woman belongs to the
class who are descrloed, in thfl' language of the
Morgue, as "unknown." She is thirty years old,
wears a red velvet cao, crape trimmings, white
handkerchief around her neck, morocoo boots,
pia d bDrdtred grey shawl, calico underskirt,
and black overokirt. Had a lunch in her pocket
of sardines packed between brown bread and
made into a pi.-ca'ory sandwich. Such a woman
of a su Jdcn enters a laeer-b-er saloon ou For
sjth street, aks fcr "ein glass," awalloffs the
contents without blowing oil the froth, and
drops down deal. Ilia she put laudanum into
It T No one saw her do so, ana the coroner not
beine notified of her death until nearly twelve
hours after it happened, nt facts have yet bicn
got at, except the mytrious one ot her being
spirited away In a jiffy to a second-class under,
taker's 00 the Bowery. It may be a case of
bushed-up murder, or it may be a case of "de
termined" suicide ''determined," of course,
who ever beard of a suicide tbat wasn't "deter
mined ?"), or it may be a case of death from
natural causes. Bat in tbe present state of
public apprehension, when the shadow of the
elusive "Jim" is jet hanging over the matutinal
sweepers of area-steps, the prejudices are in
lavor of dtath by violence.
Yesterday evening was celebrated the first
anniversary of Sump'y Dumpty'a birth. After
the evening's public enlerta.nment was over,
tables were arranged on the large stae of the
Olympic Theatre, and all hands present "lell
in," the plunder consisting of everything eatable
and driukable tbat usually figure upon preten
tious bills of fare, llany of the actjrs and
actresses ot other theatres were present, aud
the theatrical critics of the various daily and
weekly newspapers were largely represented.
It was a novel idea this celebration of Hump'.y
JhttniAy'B birth, one worthy of the brain of tho
conccctor ol tbe conceits which figure on picto
rial placards over all the waste places ol the
city, representative of the more salient incidents
ia the career of that spoiled darling, who, like
other darllugs of the public, before this, has
remained so long a time "on the fence."'
Mlts Kellogg has been playing "Violetta," aud
the newt-papers have been declaring that she
sings better than La Grange doet, and acts
better than GazznigAdd. To praise Miss KcL
lofgls thelathion. To hint that Patti, Nilsson,
or Tictjeus may posbibly be her superior proves
jou to be cither suburban or cynical. The
costumes at the opera, particularly during Clara
Louise's appearances, have been verv gorgeous.
Fashionable young men have Instituted a new
custom, namely, that of parting their beards-
such of them as have any in tno middle, which
gives them a horny or task-like appearance,
