BY OKI OP THBMSBLVM.
The following daily plan of work for a notifi
maid In small family should bo printed In
bold tjpr, ond haoir op In a conspicuous place
in the kitchen, to that In any emergency It can
at once be referred to:
Half-past six o'clock A. M. Be; upon reflec
tion, don't. Wait till your mistres rings; it
won't trouble her much, and a little extra
snoore will do you ro harm. In the event of
the milkman putting in an appearance at this
abMirdly early hour, lot him knock; your
master will open the door, most likely then
why need j ou go?
klpht About this time joi had better think
of preparing breakfast. If the family are in a
hurry, dou't be annoyed If the water won't
boll, but make the tea and coffee at onco. If
the family don't li'xc it, expatiate on the virtues
of patience. You will probably bo told to "hold
jour tongue," and to "leave the room." Com
ply, uuder protest, with both requests.
Nine You may now endeavor to snatch a
hasty morsel jourself. If the bell rings answer
It with jour mouth lull: this has always a pleas,
log effect, and is sure to be properly appreci
ated; moreover, if jour master and mistress
have hearts-as ihi'y l.a ven't, as a rale they
are likely to reflect upon the distress they oc:a
filon jou by Interrupting jou at jour meals,
and will refrain for the luture from dolo? so.
Ten Clean up tins breakfast things; don't
mind smashing a fo.v cups and saucers. I
crockeries were never smashed, how are the
poor people who keep china shops to live? Look
at it from thi? philanthropic point of view, and
be happy.
Eleven As soon a the master has taken his
departure put his ttu Jy to rights. In this jou
may allow your mistress to help you, inasmuch
as she will turn out the pockets of her husband's
dressing gown, and appropriate all the loose
half-pence the may find. Burn all the loose
papers jou find littering the place. Hide away
all pipes and everything In the shape of tobacco.
Much amusement will bo caused when the
master comes home, lie likes to have a hunt
for his slippers ail men do.
Twelve You ought, your mistress will say,
to think of jour upstairs duties now: such as
making the beds. Beprove her not too
severely, but more la sorrow than in anger. She
majn't like it but what is that to you? The
mo6t efficacious medicines are not always the
most toothsome. Say that In jour last place
jou were always allowed to do jour work your
own way. If youns;, your mistress will proba
bly give in. Rest a while; read a chapter or
two of "Ihe Nun of Nuremberg," or some such
exciting romance. Let the kitchen fire out.
ifem. In the winter always keep the nubbly
bits of coal jourself, and send only dust up
stairs. Write poetry, and take jour hair out of
papers.
One P. M. Your mistress will then take a
snack by way of lunch, or if there are children
they will diue at this hour. Be late with dinner;
it improves tnc appetites of the joungsters, and
makes them late at school: then they get into a
row, and jou are naj ply rewarded for any au
nojance they may have inflicted upon yon,
and jou can go about jour work with the con
soling reflection that you are at peace with all
maukicd.
Two You dine now don't hurry yourself
jou can't afford to suffer from indigestion. Eat
heartily, and afterwards have a nap upon the
hearthrug. Exercise after a full meal is de
cidedly unwholesome.
Three Clean tbe slope.
Four Make the beds.
Five Prepare for jour master's dinner.
When he comes home a scene may be expected;
if jou send the food up stairs in a lukewarm
condition jour mistress will catch it. You then
can ascertain how she likes it. If jou have a
wlf h of your own, you may have words wita
her. If so, give lur warning; she can't do with
out jou. If she tays she can, pack up your
traps ond leave the house directly. This will
show that you are not to be trilled with.
Half-past Six Tea.
From Seven till Eleven Flirt with the Muses.
Don't clear up the dinner things, but leave
tuatn till tO'ffiorro w. Ask to go out for half an
hour, and aon't come in till past ten. Swear
the house-clocks are all wrong. Have some
supper and light literature; put your- hair lu
papers. Djn't turn off the gas at the meter;
jou may be blown up in the night. No matter:
jour mistress blows jou up eyery day. Gals,
