VJIAIT. Gtutf-Ye Dore'a Purgatory and lBrui"e. Otitave Dore hag, on lb whole, Buojeedel In lUvutratlDg th Purgatory. Th-drawing! re liui- too like those iu the VnWio, too dread fnl,' too Hula penetrated b the Idea of Hope, to rojittKo perreotlj the iia which one aitaohes to M9 Catholio Furgatorjr, the place Of puifioatiti;,' rather ttiau of punishment only, bnt Btify they are very wonderful draw lugs. In &one, a?, for example, in the one Where Araolirna is Been Btmtohed out into a Rlgantio spider, the infernal idea, punishment for the ke of pnulshmeut, is too manifest; but in others, the higher notion of an infinite drearinesn, through which Boula all bat lost pass on to Paradise, is realized as only D,ie conld Lave realized it. There is very little in it, nothing Indeed but one of those dark shadowy depths which only Gnatave Dote has learned perfeotly to draw; bnt above the ravine flits or marohes the veiled fchadowy host, half angelic, which some bow one feels rather than sees will reach beaven, bnt is now in misery, misery not utter, not fatal to reflection, or even to a faint Interest In things around, but still misery of an intense kind. The use of shadowy forma with lighted outlines Is apparency the instru ment by which OuBtave XJ016 hopes to pro duce Lis effect, a grand Idea of endurance which would not be enduianoe, whioh would a'most be happiness, were there only light; and he does produce it most effectually, even when be strains the thought almost beyond the grasp of ordinary maokin l; or when he throws us violently back upon a purely physical conception of toil. Labor in haelf is Bcarc-lr tmntahoient. and, for all that appears, labor In itself is the pnniabment present here. Uis greatest defect Li that, again and again, punishment takes that form of pure malignity, of bootless infliction of suffering, whioh is the farthest from the catholio and from the true idea of God's pro vidence in dealing with His creatures. The spirit of torture rises and rises as also it does in the poem till in the figures whioh the flames liok but cannot bnrn, ezoltiog an gony of fear rather than an agony of physi cal pain, we have men to whom hell with its permanence were almost redemption. And yet criticism of this kind on the Farga tory is not oritioism. Look the draw ings through slowly, meditatively, thinking of Dante, and not either of theology or Dore; and slowly, as we deem, it will somehow dawn npon you, unwilling to ocept it. that in these beights and these depths, theee tricks of the perpendicular for they are trioks these gleams of an invisible Bun, and bints of present angels, in this deep glcom ever all whioh yet leaves men human and souls beautiful, In these clouds which do not bide rays, but hide their souroe, in these proeeBsions without a shrine the monkish Idea of eels baa caught Gnatave Dore pro cessions in whioh there is a Bub-idea some timeB of horror, sometimes of grotesquerle vide page 1C4, where beasts with the bat wings whioh Dote gives the Devil, and women's, breasts, and beads of ani mal or bird, are driving the sages of mankind), the true thought of a . half inspired poet has found an expression almost as full as itaelf; less near perhaps to our hearts; more near to those physical emotions within ns, those horrors, repulsions, disgusts, of which the nearest and the trueBt we can say is that they are instinotive, that they are ' coordinate in origin with the reason whioh judges them, and, therefore, beyond perfect analysis by an equal power. The illustrations whioh can effect this impression are great, even though a minute study of them might reveal the email adroitnesses by whioh the im pression is created. The Paradise does not strike us equally. The leading idea of the series of drawings figures bathed in light wheeling in eocentrio eiroles round a half visible oentre, figures usually winged in Itself a somewhat feeble notion has a striking but rather indistinct ffeot (In 352 it is decidedly operatio), and the bevies of saintly women, in long dresses falling perpendicularly, fail to impress us at all. They are serious and beautiful, but not divine. The Cross borne by wreaths of angels who are not if we may be allowed bo mun dane a oritioism aJJ flviBg the same way, would be a wonderful hint for Dieppe work ers in ivory, but is too material altogether for the idea it is intended to convey, at least to minds which feel in Jesus something more than the jteing extended on the cross and suf- fering untold agony to be repaid by triumph beyond words. Nothing shocks us in Gnatave Core's Paradise, and nothing can be said to fail; but nothing succeeds fully, nothing satis I fies the longing in every heart to conceive of what "raradise," the borne or the redeemed, way be. There are fair landscapes, and saintly figures, aad glorious ideas of a new relation to something above ourselves ; but of peaoe, and light, and beati tude, of the peaoe which pas Beth expression, of the light whioh comes from Uis presence, of the beatitude which should be in the souls of those who are with Him, there is no trace. Some faint gleam of joy, of the rapture of satisfied benevolence, ought surely to be appa rent in the face of the watching Dante, and is set, though once it is irradiated by angelio light. The artist would say we are demanding too much. Possibly, but then we are not de manding more than Dante, by the consent of mankind, has in some more or less material istic way 8uooeeded in giving. We oannotsay, ) and we speak as admirers . of M. Dore's , renins, that we think he also has succeeded, l It was not open to him, perhaps, to give ns f the true Paradise, the place for to Dante it 1 was a vlace beyond all human imagination, jo fix the divine dreamejtbat floated before the uthorof the Apocalypse, bnt it was open to m t Aa what Southev did. draw a nlaoe in V Licit at least the human heart could rest UiBfied that the highest human ideal, earth iithont sin. has been excelled. This M. Dore 'aa not done, and while his Inferno will live ;hile Dante's lives, and the Purgatorio will We, without quite deserving, its immortal lyTthe Paradise will, we fear, be quoted only Ttrooi now oioee tne inexoraoie uuilid around genius, even when it is as great W of M.
