Waalilnffton'ft lUrtlilTi
Tub anniversary of the birtu. of Washlugton
was oehered in, aooord'mg to ouatoui, by the
rumbling of cannon and the ringing of bells.
Daring the day the publlo offices and banks
tre oloatd, bunting ia liberally displayed, the
Veterans of 1812 are holding their customary
meeting and passing their usual string f
resolutions, some of the beneflolal societies
are parading the streets, and that ia about all.
Jt id not that we are growing lukewarm in our
appreciation of the inestimable services ren.
dered t the nation by him who was "first in
peace, first in war, and first in the hearta of his
countrymen." The name of Washington is still
held in as high reverence by the mass of the
American people as at any period in our his
tory. But we have seen, during late years, so
much of the pomp and pageantry of war, that
the mockery of an army with banners haa lost
the oharm it formerly possessed, and a cele
bration of the Twenty-second of February after
lie fashion of a half century ago is therefore
quite out of the question. In this and several
other States, however, the day haa recently
been made a legal holiday, and thus the people
have imparted to it the highest mark of their
gratitude.
In this city, uie arrival oi tue anniver
sary is associated with an unusaal occurrence.
Fight years ago this day, Abraham Linooln,
then on his way to the national capital to
assume the duties of the high office to which
he had been elected by the people of the
United States, with bis own hands raised the
flag, whioh treason had attempted to dishonor,
over the Hall in which the representatives of
the oolonies had signed the solemn
act declaring these colonies a free and
Bovereign nation. This 2'2d of February was
a memorable day in the history of Philadel
phia, one which her citizens will not soon for
get. On that occasion Mr. Lincoln defined
clearly the platform on whioh he stood, that of
equal and impartial justice to all men, and
then proclaimed his readiness to yield up his
life rather than surrender these principles.
Before he was permitted to serve out the fall
time for which the people demanded his ser
vices at the head of the nation, this great
saoruloe was demanded at hia hand, and now
he lives in history as the one to whom, next
to Washington, the thanks of the republio are
due, and will be gratefully tendered till the
republio ceases to hold a place among the
nations of the earth.
Political and MooUI Equality.
Nothing is better defined in this oountry than
the difference between political and sooial
equality. The laws can properly be invoked
to secure the former; but in the regulation of
Booial intercourse it is best for all parties that
the largest liberty should prevail, so that the
instinctive aversions and affiuitiea arising from
a thousand varied causes may have free scope.
Sooial harmony can only be attained by a com
mon agreement to disagree, and a systematic
avoidance of irritating and annoying contact.
The training of the American people has ad
mirably qualified them for the diffijult task
of oombining heartily with a portion of their
fellow-oitlzens for one purpose, and yet at the
same time assuming an attitude of hostility or
""indifference to the same set of men in other
relations. As voters, or aa church members,
or in business connections, thousands of indi
viduals habitually cooperate, with great zeal
and earnestness, with thousands of other
individuals with whom they could not main
tain cordial social relations; and any earnest
attempt to enforce a uniform contact would
only lead to continued strife and difficulty, if
not to a total disruption of the natural points
of assimilation.
The millionaire and the day-laborer may
heartily and sincerely greet each other, aa
they march together in a political procession
or join in a common hurrah for their favorite
oandidate, or stand in the same line on election
day; but it would not be agreeable to either
party to attend a social assemblage at the
house of the other, and it would be the height
of absurdity to pretend that nnisoa of politi
oal feeling should necessarily lead to au ox
change of visits between their families.
The numerous differences between men of
the same race are greatly increased by com
plications caused by color or extraction. The
Democrat! party used this fact aa an argu
ment against the abolition of slavery, aul
Subsequently employed it to prevent the ex
tension of the right of suffrage to colored men
Their standing appeal was typified by the
favorite inscription on their banners: "We
don't want our daughters to marry niggers.'
Silly aa this device may be deemed, it has
Droved no idle task to combat it; and the only
safe or just course for the Republican party
la to make the distinction between political
and Booial equality so lear that every rational
xaind oan comprehend it.
Harebrained reformers, or reckless zealots,
Who profess Republics principles, but do the
party infinitely more harm than good, fre
quently endeavor to confound political rights
with sooial privileges, and wittingly or unwit
tingly they thus render effective assistance to
the Demooratio efforts to convert social preja
dloea or antipathies into insurmountable bar
riers to the politioal enfranchisement of the
'American cltlieua pf African descent."
Some enterprising individual of this de
scription haa "improved the oooasion" of the
forthcoming Inauguration Ball at Washington.
A letter has been written to Mayor Bowen,
chairman of the Committee of lavltation, ask
ing whether "any distinction on aoooant of
color is to be made in the sale of tiokets?" to
whiuh that magnate replies that thequestioa
of color has never risen in the committee, and
he cannot of course deoide for them, but that
so far as his individual action is ooncerned, he
is willing to sell tickets to "any person of
respectable character and standing in the
community."
Nothing oan be more unimportant, per f ,
than the attendance at this ball, and the
Amerioan people might be equally content
whether it is never held, or whether it is com
posed exclnfiively of white persons or of black
persons. But the correspondence indicates
that a scheme is on foot to indirectly commit
the Republican party to the doctrine that
social equality is a necessary sequence of po
litical equality, and to make it appear that
Republican Senators and Representatives,
with their wives, sons, and daughters, volun
tarily mingle in the mazes of the walU with
ebony beaux and belles, in the eyes of the
whole nation, because such association is a
legitimate result of their political principles.
We protest alike against any such conclusion
and against any Boheme which gives the un
scrupulous organs of the Democratic party a
plausible pretext for impressing suoh ideas
upon their bigoted readera. Sensible negroes
should, for the welfare of their raoe, avoid
helping to frame arguments for their adver
saries, even if a few white men, pretending to
be their friends, are foolish enough to urge
them to display their toilettes and their
terpsichorean accomplishments in the com
pany of the magnates of the land. '
Every step of Republican progress has been
won by a hard fight against social prejudices,
which have no just or logical connection with
political affairs, and every movement which
tends to render the Republican party respon
sible for the doctrines of the few misoegena-
tionists who belong to that organization gives
aid and comfort", to the Demooraoy, and
increases the difficulty of securing the reoog-
nition of the political rights of the oolored
race.
