The North Pennsylvania Knilroad Comoany
are having an additional trak laid from Berks
street to Abington, a distance of ten miles.
About six miles have been completed. The
larjie addition to the cugiue-hou.se is nearly
completed, and tliero will he accommodations
in it for twenty-three locomotive. Three new
enuincs have just been completed, aud four
new passenirer cars are being constructed. The
tneinejiousc at Bethlehem is being enlarged,
and the new brick freipht depot at that place is
now ready for use. A stone station house has
been built at Fort Washington, and a brick oue
at Hellertown. During the past three mouths
there has been an increase In the earnlncs of
the road, as compared with last year, of over
$38,000.
The fallowing vessels cleared from ihU port
during the week ending Feoruary 13, with petro
leum: Barque Meridiau, (or Bremen, with
156,742 gallons; barque Bride, for Slettin, with
120,000 do. ; barques Black Brothers ami Wood
laud, lor Rotterdam, with 331,053 dj. ; brig Speed,
lor Elsinorc, with 95,538 do.; making a total of
703,833 gallons. Two ships and five barques are
now loading. The following vessels cleared
from this port last week, ending February 20,
with petroleum : Barque fcSorterue, for Elsinore,
With 146,82(1 gallons; barque Turner, lor Cork,
with 145,513 do., and barque KJffiu. for Gibral
tar, with 143,500 do.; making a total of 435,833
gallons.
The new turbine wheel at the Fairmouut
Waterworks was started on Saturday and lound
to work well and smoothly. It is calculated to
pump 8,000.000 gallons of water every 21 hours,
with twelve revolutions per minute of the
wheels. In remodelling the mill house for this
improvement, the general external appearance
has not been materially changed, and when
completed, the whole structure will be tire
proof. At the outlet of the new wheel-pit is
placed a drop na'e similur to those used for
canal locks. A pipe leads to n small well just
outside of the main wheel pit, into which is
placed the suction pipe of a centiifugal pump,
which will be driven by a small turbine wheel,
seven inches in diameter, supplied with, water
from the ascending main. The pump is so
arranged as to be able to pump out two of the
wheel pits, one of which is lin she J.
About 5 o'clock yesterday mornintr. a Are
occurred in the engine room of the lead works
ot Taylor & Smith, No. 12U Noble street.
Tne building in which the tire took place is of
stone, three stories high, and fie flames com
pletely gutted the room above the engine and
slightly damaged the upper part ot that portion
fronting on Noble street. In the rear was a one
story frame shed, occupied by (Jeorae D. Cook &
Brother as a planing mill and box manufactory.
This was entirely destroyed. Taylor & Smith
estimate their loss at $15,000, which is covered
by insurance in the following companies:
Lycoming County Compnnv, $4000; Metro-

Md.. $2000; Queen's, London, $4000; Franklin
ard Citizens', Wheeling, Va., $3000 each. Cook
& Brother'B loss is said to be about $5000. which

is owned by G. B. Brown, was damaged to the

The Denf and Dnnib Asylum.
From the annual report of the Pennsylvania
Iui-tituiion for the Deaf and Dumb we select the
lollowing:
The board continue to give their earnest at
tention to the subject of articulation. Nothing
has occurred to change the views they have
already expressed on it. They will rejoice in
any improvements that can be introduced in the
mode of impartiug instruction to the deaf mutes;
but consider it would be unwise to make
changes that In their opinion would not be at
tended with advantage. All matters connected
with the education of the deaf mute will con
tinue to claim and receive the consideration of
the directors.
It has been stated in former reports that it
was desirable to have new buildinfis erected
for this school in the cooniry, but near to tho
city. The hifih cost of materials and labor has
prevented the directors from carrying their
design ioto execution for the preseut. Hut
while delayed, ithas not been abandoned. The
directors are riving their deliberation to the
location aud size of the contemplated ediBce,
the largest number of pupils that can be judi
ciously received and educated under one prin
cipal, etc., etc.
It is a matter of unfeigned patlsfaetion to
state that in our lare family the pupils have
continued K) enjoy a hinh degree of health, and
that not a single death occurred in the institu
tion during the pa-t year.
A fatal accident happened to one of the
pupils while walking on a railroad, in Delaware
county.
During the yenr that has just closed 226 pupils
were connected with the institution, viz.: 124
boys and 102pirls; on the 1st of January, Ihgh,
there were 101 boys and !i0 fclils total, llll.

It is a ubji'ct of ciuctre reeret tha. the
mortality in the white department has been
unusually U'ge. Five deaths took place dur
ing the year that has just closed. Large as tbe
numbtr ot death may appear, it is less than
one per cent. It is, however, consoling to
know that they were under skilful and ex
perienced phyrioians and an excellent nurse.
In the colored department not a siugle death
has occured since October, 1807, and very little
eickntss ol any kind.
