Tbe French bociety of Dramatic Authors
Usee its powers In a very spirited inauuer. M.
Fischer, the director of the Chatelet, reused to
lulSl the engagements with regard to pieces
made by his predeceesor. M. Hostein, pleading
that M. Hostein's failure hal put an end to all
contracts entered into by him. The society
now forbids the performance, at tuc Chatclet,
of its pieces, and M. Fischer, though protuHiDtf
against the injustice to which he is subject, is
obliged to capitulate.
A new experiment, to wM.:h considerable
interest is attached, has commenced at. the
Oaite. It consists of a series of mid-day per
formances of classical French dramas, accom
panied by Illustrative- essays from well known
writers. Le del was chosen for the opening
representation, M. Otiuvee delivering tha
prefatory address. Principal psrts iu tho
performance were allotted to MaJ'llt) Debay and
SIM. Ballande una Duranine. rue scentc deco- ;
ration were faded and shabby, and the lecture j
had no great interest. A largo audience, :
mainly composed of the pupils of the various
schools, aseembled.
In addition to the two comedies recently i
played at the Odeon, a third novelty has been
produced at the same boue. This Is a three-act j
comedy lu verse, entitled Les Droi's du Owur.
Its author is M. Leopold Laluye, whose Au
JHrinlemps, a pleasant little piece, is included in
the repertory of the Comedie. It shows the
struggle between a b enevolent doctor who has
nourished for sixteen years a girl he has found,
and tho father who late in life retraces her and
endeavors to secure over her rights of heart as
well as tbofe of law. In tbe conclusion the
doctor Wins, but he is backed up by the in
fluence of a lover, and the fight is accordingly
not fair.
The A'henomm say?: Not often does apiece
appear ou the French stage so openly profligate
as La Jlouietie, a new comedy by MM. Delacour
and l imy, produced at the Varieties. Plays on
the subject of gambling are not uncommon at
this house, which witnessed the first perform
ance of Tren'e Ant de la Vie dun J 'oueur and
Beverley d-Angoweme. But nothing in La
Jiouiette i real is the lessons taught in tbeio
dramas. - "isc, us hero. I about to marry,
but ib induced to accompany to Homburg
Puperiou, a swindler, who professes to have
discovered an infallible martingale. "Oscar"
has a second companion, "Chinchilla," a
lady whose connection, with him is to
cease with his speedily approaching nuptials.
At urnt all coi well, and money is easily made.
"Oscar" aecordbiely presents "Chinchilla"
with flfteei: thousand francs; but shortly after
wards he is cleaned out, aud unable to fuliil
the contract on which his weldin j depends.
Then "Ohlnchllla" shows her maguaniaiity, re
turning him the money he has given her, and
di'embairasslu hlui of her presence by eloping
with a rich Turk, who is one of the uamblers.
This precious production is followed by UArclu
tecie de tea Dames, a one-act comedy by M.
Henri Bocage, scarcely more satisfactory or
jnoie decent.
