THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, SATURDAY, FEBKCARY C, 1869, I OVIt RELIGIOUS COLUMN, The Oldest Chrhtlan J.jmn. tin Tad. Lib. Ill of Clctncut of Alexandria, Mlven (In.Grcek) the uoi ancient hjmnof tn primitive Church. It Is thero (150 years flcr the Apostles) asserted to be of much earlier Origin. H may hate been sudr by the "beloved disciple" before he meended to his reward. The following version will give some Imperfect idea Of Us spirit:-, t. Kherherd tf trndor youth, Uuidinfr in love anl truth Through devious wnys; Christ, onr trluropbaut Kinjj 1 We come Thy name to bIdc, And here our children bring To about Tuy praise. Thou art our holy Lord 1 The nil-subduing Word, Healer of strife 1 Thou didst Thyself abuse, That from slu's deep disgrace Thou might est save our race, And give us life. Tbou art wisdom High Priest! Thou bast prepared the feast Of boly lovel And In our mortal pain None calls on Thee In vain; ' Help Thou dost not disdain, Help lroni above. Ever be Thou onr Guide, Our Shepherd and our pride, Our staff and song ! .lesus! Thou Christ of nod! By the perennial word, Dead us where Thou bast trod, Muka our faith strong. Fo now, and till we die, Sound we Thy praises on bigu, And joyful soni?. Ini'uuts, Bud the glad throng, Who to Thy Church beloug, Unite und swell the song To Christ our King. l'ay ;Your 1'aslor. Pay your pastor what you have promised. If It be sufficient for bis temporal support, bis ttlnd will be free from worldly eares, and he may give himself up to the work of his ministry Iflth a cheerful, contented, and happy heart. Be will respect and love you for jour liberality, and labor the more earnestly for your spiritual tf(Sd. lie will not be easily drawn away to another field at least he will not be ever seek ing a change. Able to educate bis children, to supply his library with the best book of the (lay, happy in the midst of home comforts, and able to lay up a little for the time when he matt be laid aside, be has nothing to do but to ' itudy and labor for your gooQ and the Master's Jtlory. If tbe salary be inadequate.lt la all you pro Biised, and perhaps all you are able to give. He knew it when he accepted jour call. If he be a man of earnest devotion to the work; Willing to make sacrifices of personal comfort for the sake of preaching Christ, he may reduce his expenses to his income, and still be happy and useful. You ought to appreciate his labor of love, and pay him, by all means, to the day aud tbe dollar. You may be too poor to give him more, but jou caunot afford to be disho. nest, especially towards one who is sacrificing so much for your spiritual good. But what is the pastor to do whose salary is paid only in part, or in uncertain instalments, coming In long after the quarter has become ' due? What is he to do! How is he to sustain his character for common honesty? Yoar promises win noi pay nis puis at me ouicuor s, the grocer's, or tbe bookseller's. How can he love you as dear children in Christ, or pray for you, or labor in tho study, the pulpit, or from house t house, as he should ? Is it a matter of surprise that he should preach dull sermons, j and seldom call to spend a pleasant hour at I jour homes? Is It to be wondered at if he 1 should become dissatisfied with jou, and you with him, bis ministrations unprofitable to jou, his temper soured, and his character and in fluence as a minister of the gospel ruined? No congregation can afford to let their pastor's salary remain unpaid. They can better afford to borrow the money at fifty per cent, than fail to meet their just obligations to him, and bear the consequences which inevitably follow to both pastor and people. Pay jour pastor what jou have promised. EPISCOPAL. Tbe Episcopal papers publish a form of penance which Dr. poane, when in Hartford, used to require of candidates lor confirmation, requiring certain prayers to be said at certain fixed hours each day for a period of time, varying at his option, before they should be admitted to the sacrifice of the Holy tuchartst. His consecration was to title- plsce on Tuesday of this week. According to the decisiou of the Court of Arches, in England, lighted ciudles on tbe Holy Table are lawful oulv when they are needed for light, so that all that is now neces. f$Tj is to darken tbe chancol tor that purpose. The priest no longer eleva'.es tbe elements above bit bead, which is declared to be un lawful ; but be lowers his bead down to the level of tbe table, and thus brings it beneath the elements.
