Patrick McQuillan, used 22 yearn, rciding

sylvania Hospital yesterday, suffering irom
pevcre burns, occasioned by the explosion ot a
furnace at the above named place.
A jonng man named Gross, while pasting
along Ninth and Cherry streets at 2 o'clock
yesterday morniup, was knocked down by a
man, with the evident intention of robbery. The
cries of Mr. Gross brought two gentlemen to
bis assistance, and the thief ran and escaped.

M ajor Fox, at the request of Postmaster
Biupbaru, has issued an order to the lieutenants
of po ice. having for it object the protection of
the street letter-boxes from depredation. In it
the policemen ate notified that no one has a
right to open street boxes at anj time wbo does
not wear the letter-carriers' uniform, tind that
the uniformed carriers are only authorized to
do so within specified hours.
Laura Greiner, aged five years, daughter of
William Greiner, reading at No. 417 York ave
nue, died yesterday hom the effect of burns
received by her clothes taking fire from a stove
on Thursday evening. Lad wig Greiner, grand
father of the child, while endeavoring to extin
guish the flames, was badly burned about the
bands and arms.
A meeting of the Irish Republicau Associa
tion was held lat evening at Fifth and Locust
streets. The following is the pledge of member
ship adopted by the society : "l do solemnly pro
mise, declare, and say, that I will support, pro
tect, and defeud the Constitution of tbe United
States and the uuion of the States against all
enemies, foreign and domestic: that I will
support the principles of universal liberty,
universal eufftage, aod equal rights to all men,
without distinction of color, class, or country;
that I will support the protection of American
industry aud manufactures by favoriug a pro
tective tariff on foreign Imports; that I will
endeavor to destroy British influence on this
continent, and that I will support and sustain
the Republican party as the supporter, pro
tector, and defender of those principles."
Detectives Franklin and Gordon visited a
thieve' den at Broad and Wood streets yester
day, and found it closed. They gaiued au
entrance, and discovered a stove which hud
every appearance of recently having tire in it.
Leaving the premises, Detective Franklin passed
down Wood street, and near Thirteenth be
noticed two young men together, one of whom
entered a jewelry store and offered for sale some
silverware. This party the officer arrested aud
detained in the store until he had secured the
companion who waited outside, some distance
from the place. In tbe meantime Detective
Gordon had secured the arrest ot Joseph Carles
and Edward Thompson, wno had made their
appearance at the den. The prisoners arrested
by Detective Franklin are named John Stevens
and David Farrel. The accused have been held
by Alderman Kerr for a further hearing on
Monday.

The Hiawatha House, at McKeesport City,

The receipts from customs at this port from
the 23d to the 30 ih ulu, inclusive, aggregated

Lokdon, Feb. 6. i he preparations for the
mtcting of Parliament are nearly complete. In
the House, Mr. Henry F. Cowper will move, and
Mr. Munticlla will second, the address to the
Queen. Lord Clarendon's health is much Im
paiied, aud it is expected be will soon be obliged
to retire from the Foreign Office.
London, Feb. 6. The rowers participating In
the Paris Con'ereuce have grautcd a brief space
of Ume for Greece to decide on their proposal.
KiitR George has returned to Athens and is
engaged in forming a new Cabinet. He finds
great difficulty In completing the Ministry,
owing to the hostility of the Greeks to the
Conference; but it is Hunounccd that Zaimis has
consented to act as Premier, and Doliyannl as
Minittrrof Foreign Affairs, both ol whom are
favorable to the Conference, aud that the other
seats in the Cabinet have also been filled with
Ministers who will consent to sign the protocol.

The Vienna Mission.
Washington, Feb. 6. The President ha3
nominated a son of Minister Watt to be Secre
tary of Legation at Vienna.
The Ciise of Florence Sentinel!,
the recusant New York witness, was up in the
House today. During tho discussion Judge
Kelley stated that Scannell had come over to
Philadelphia and helped the Democrats to carry
the election.
Mr. Biooks, of New York, replied that he
would not allow such an insinuation to be cast
upon his constituent. Brooks said that Scannell
was unable to pay the costs of arrest.
Mr. Kelley replied that probably Scannell
could raise money by mortgaging his trotting
horse here, which it was understood he owned.
Mr. Brooks offetcd a resolution to have
Scaunell discharged without the tayment of
cast. The debate was quite spirited, Mr.
Brooks pleading the poverty ot his humble con
stituent, and the other members stating tbut
Scannell wore a diamond, and was a member of
the New York Councils, all of whose members
weie rich. Mr. Brooks' resolution was laid on
tbe table.
Bcannell Is comfortably quartered at one of
tbe hotels here, and is endeavoring to make a
martyr ot himself iu order to commend himself
to tbe New Yoik Democracy.
The Alaska Purchase Contradiction by
Mr. Painter.
Washington, Feb. 5. The statement of your
correspondent as to the testimony cf Mi.Walker
and Mr. Frederick P. Stanton, at.d my action
in relation thereto, is faUe. Mr. Walker swore
that I had never spoken to him on any subject
in my lite, and Mr. Frederick P. Stanton's alle
gation tlint I had applied to him for money for
myself or any one else is contradicted point
blank by me. under oath, and bv his cross-
examination. He admitted that he (Frederick
P. Stanton) bad alwavs denied ever having any
connectiou with the matter until it came out on
the investigation. I never saw or heard of
Martin, except through newspaper statements,

will perform tbe service from each of the start
ing pointa of destination above named, as fol
lows: 1st. Tbe rate at which they will transport each

for cooking their rations, which will be supplied

2d. Tbe rate per 100 pounds at which they will

and all stores received by the contractor for
transportation must be delivered at their desti
