THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, FRIDAY, J Aim All Y 29, 18G9. LITE R A.T URE. SVIEW OKNKVV JJOOIC8. at I Know A hoot Ukh KVoi.kji. B Abra ham, l'abliahed by J. 11. Lippiaoott f Co. to pleasant ooonsloually to meet with ft Her wbo has a pleasantly original style, f, Without shocking oar prejadioeg, by his patlons from the accustomed order of thing, Offending by efforts at strangeness and stn 'wity, knows how to tell the old story oj jte, hope, lortglug, and despair in such a inner as to give it all the charm of entire Wty. The author of the work before us la not do this altogether, but he has his own j of telling his story, and his deviation m the ordinary routine of story-writers jbatltute the principal charm of the book jmewhat inolined to be garrulous, Mr. Page Ranches oil from his main narrative a dozen fees in every chapter to discourse upon every plo under the sun; and if hi philosophic' eotions and conclusions are neither very iw nor very profound, they are characterized niuoh fthrewduees and practical oommon se. The author apologizes for uls wander. gs too often, however, and there are some hneoeaearr sueurs at Puritanism and the Unkees, two subjects that Mr. Page was evi sntly not suflioioiatly well informed about to laks his opinions of any value. The Btory o en Ecolea is well worthy of attention on its Vn aooount. The characters are lifelike, and he sketches of society and manners in a Iorth Carolina village have an appearance of uth and fidelity. From Messrs. Smith & Eaglish we have celved "The Letters of Madame deSuviguo" d "The Letters of Lady Mary Wortley ontagu." Published by lloberts Brothers, Boston. Itnth of these volumes are edited by ilrs. S. J. Hale, who has arranged the letters jor the greater convenience of the reader by idiscardh'g the order in which they were written, and grouping those addressed to each erson together. Short introductory bio graphical sketches of Midatae de SCvignu and Lady Mary Montagu are also given. These two iamous letter-writers wero remark able women, and they lived in remarkable times. Their writings give us a great amount .. v , ci Historical lniormauon ruoiu men am women, manners and customs, that can be obtained from no other Eource. Lady Mary Montagu, if she did not take Madame de St'vigLo as her model, at least endeavored to rival the purity and grace of her style. The letteis of both ladies have beenjesteemed ti models of oomposition, but hitherto they lave not been generally accessible. The edition issued by Messrs. Roberts Brothers is handsomely printed and bound, and is to be recommended to those who wish to read the letters on account of the interest of their sub jects or to study them a3 models of style. Messrs. Fields, Osgood & Co. are pub lishing a uniform edition of Charles Reade's novels, which will be agreeable intelligence Alt the admirers of that author. Hitherto Mr- Eeade's stories have been issued in all manner of styles, thapea, and sizes, to the disgust of book buyers who like to have uniformity on their library shelves. This edition is printed in double columns, on fine paper, and is taste fully bound in green cloth. "Hard Cash" and "Foul Play" have been issued, and are for sale by Turner Brothers & Co., No. 80S Chesnut street. Sloan's Architectural Review for February has reaohed us, and we find it, as usual, filled with interesting articles on architecture and building. The editors judioiously divide their space between the artistic and practical, and those wh3 are not particularly interested in architectural matters will find the Architectural Revitto to contain a large amount of interest ing reading. The February number has fine designs for stores, churohes, villas, etc., with full descriptions otU the details. Published by Claston, Remeen & IlaflelllDger. WOMEN AND LITE RAT UK E. To the Editor of the Keening Telegraph: Bib: If toe claim is admitted that the average intellect aud education of Auici-xan women arc- greater than tboio of their European sisters, it cannot be denied that there is not yet the atten tion paid to their education t but there should be. We Co not jet apmecliuc that woman h not the "conventional me;iiocnt" to which she has been limited, and Is capable of a true intel lectual development, In this It is not meant to accept all tbe domaa pronmiisa'c-1 at womeuVi rights conventions, but to lumutuiu that a proper mental development is right'iilly demanded by the sex. Jan. 2B, ihux Uerr and Ieor.Mioo!liir In Tenti. In a late number of the American Natural tit, published by the Peabody Aoademy of Science in Salem, Mass., Mr. Charles Wright gives a plensaut aooount of his experience as a deer hunter in Teias. lie says: "What beoomes of deer's horns ? A few veers ago I saw an attempt to auswer the question by some person in one of the South ern Atlantic States, and he arrived at the con clusion that tho animal covers tharo, or they would be oftener found. But, in the first place, deer are not so plentiful there that they must be expected to scatter their horns very thickly over the open prts of the forest where they would he readily seen. Aud, again, each large buck has but two horns thus to dispose of each year; and the large bucks are not very numerous, while the nntlers of the pmall ones are inconspicuous. But the writer had, or thought he had, evidencs that the buck covers his antlers with leaves. Doubt less they are so covered by leaves which fall upon them, according to natural laws; but in the forests, and particularly in the prairies of the West, I have seen hundreds which cer tainly had never been covered by the animals that dropped them. They decay iu the ordi nary couree of nature, aud are also eaten by some email rodent, whose tooth-marks I have often seen upon thaui. "It may not be known to many that bucks oftm 'lock horns,' aud it sommimes becomes a 'dead-lock' literally. I Lave met, during my hunts, more than one- pair of heads thus coupled together, aud I killed one pair of bucks eo firmly united that they would have died of hunger if I had not put them to deftth in a manner less lingering and painful. These animals had evidently come together with great violence; the antlers had yielded to the shock, aud had closed again in such a manner that no ordinary exertion of strength was suf ficient to separate them. It is not very easy to txplain their position; but the beam of the left antler of one was behind, and in close con tact with the bases of the two antlers of the other, while the tips of the right antler of the former were locked in the tip of those of the latter. Wher, later, the skin on the back of the head at the base of the antlers dried and ebrunk, room was made for a little movement, tnd they could then be unlocked. "I will only touch upon one pecu licrity of the chase in Texas, R3 I heard it from thoi-e who had followed it in the Stales from which they came. It was said that in the Atlantic and Gulf States, where the chase is or was a favorite pastime, tho hunter can judge, with considerable probability, where the deer will pass when running before the hounds. Thus in a given area a township, we will suppose the deer will cross a creek in one c; two of half a dozen regular cross ings; or he will pass one of a limited number of known glades or openings in tbe general forest. But in Texas this did not hold good. Either tbe deer had no regular passing plaoes, or they had so indefinite a number that the hunters were not able to disoover them. Per haps this difference comes from the fact that running deer with hounds had never been practised there, and they had not become ufed to it. The hunters were quite at a loss where to station themselves in order to get a Fbot at the chase." LEGAL NOTICES. IN THE ORPHANS' COURT FOR THE CHY AND COUNTY Ol?
