From T. 11. Peterson & brothers we have
received "The Rod Court Farm," by Mrs.
Henry Wood. This is an elaboration of a
Btory written by Mrs. Wood which appeared
serially aevtral years ago,-and it is printed
from advauix'd proof-sheets and issued here
almnllaneoutily with its publication la Europe.
Mrs. Wood is certainly not a writer
that can be compared with George
Eliot, for instance, but she
has the faculty of weaving an interesting plot,
and her stories are finch as appeal to the
sympathies and tastes of a large majority of
novel readers. "The lied Couit Farm" will
instain her reputation rs a fascinating novel
writer, and those who have wept over the
Woes of Lady Isabel in "East Lynne" will
be likely to desire the perusal of this laat
work of Mrs. Wood.

808 Chesnut street, we have received "A Good
Fight," and other tales by Charles Reade.
Published by Ilarper & Brothers. "A Good
Fight" was originally published in Oncc-a-Week
and Harper's Weekly, and it pro
bably did more to advance Mr. Reade's
reputation than all of his previous works
pnt together. The story is artistic in
Its construction, and it is carefully written.
The subject is one that seems to have inte
rested the author deeply, for he subsequently

tled "The Cloister and the Hearth." Although
the latter is more elaborate, the general
reader will be likely to find its
piedecessor more animated, and in
reality more interesting. We have always

Who read it when it was originally published
will doubtlers be glad to do so again. The
work is handsomely gotten up by Messrs.
Harper & Brothers, and is illustrated with
the designs by Mr. C. Keeue which originally
appeared.in Once-a- Wee!;. The short sketohes
entitled "Autobiography of a Thief" and
"Jack of all Trades" are given in the volume
Mbfore us.
Messrs. Ilarper & Brothers are issuing a
Sew edition of Charles lleade's works, and
Messrs. Turner Brothers & Co. have now on
their shelves "A Good Fight," "Foul Flay,"
I and "Hard Cash." Charles Raadu is de-

the day, and if he sometimes deals in the
"sensation" element, he never degenerates
into triviality, and always gives something
that is worth reading.
The Old Literature or India.
The Government of India has tukcu a stop
which should ensure to it the gratitude of all
Heightened Hludoos, and of all those In general
Interested in Sanskrit philology. It has resolved
to allot annually a sum not Ices than 2400 to
the purpose of purchasing and making knowu
important 8anskrit MSS., to be preserved here-
titer, from loss in one of the public libraries
of India, cr in the home libiury of the Iudia

The circumstances connected with this liberal
rasolutiou deserve especial mention. The

When will this sectional aversion end? I cau
only oiler the obvious reflect ion that it is desir
able tor both North and tinuth, but especially
lor the weaker of the two, that it should eud as
quickly as possible. For the sake or the entire

citizens teel tuut they ure Americans, aud
nothine but American. If we do not accom
plih that end, we shall not rival the greatness

made Rome great, so much as the vast com

oddities; he has that lich, pruetical humor
which is perfectly unconscious of being humor

novelist. Dixie has thousands of high-toned
gentlemen who suppose themselves to be

you will find Uncle Toby and Squire Western

Audacity, vehemence, recklessness, passiou,

The chivalrous Biuthron has been too posi
tively aud authoritatively a political power to
get lair treatment iu literature. People have
not described him; they have felt driven to de
claim about him; they have preached for him or
preached against him. Northern pens have not
done justice to his virtues, nor Southern pons to
hiB vices.
How shall we manage this eccentric creature?
We have been ruled by him; we have fought
him, beaten him, made him captive; now what
treatment shall we allot him? My opinion is,
that it would be good both for him and for us
if we should perseveringly attempt to put up
with his oddities and handle him as a pet. He
resembles the ideal white bears dosenbed in the
"I'eailof Urr's Island;" "there ain't no kinder
creeter in tlie whole world if you'll only got the
right side of him." It is true that he lias wauted
to eat us, which is exasperating; it is true that
he still talks ot eating us at some convenient
season, which is ridiculous: but I believe that
he Buffered too much in our late struggle to
Eeriously think of renewing it; I hold that his
war.snorts ure mere election buncombe.
A 'little letting alone, a little conciliation, a
little flattery even, would soothe him aoiaitingly ;
and ii united with good government would iu
the end be sure to reconstruct him as a quiet
citizen and sound patriot. The Republican
party, while firmly maintaining the integrity of
the country aud the great results of the war in
the advancement of human freedom, ought to
labor aealously lor the prosperity of the South,
treat tenderly its wounded pride, fortjet the
angry past, be patient with the perturbed
present, and so create a true, heaiticlt, natioual
unity.

The biography of Thoaias Smith, tickct-of-leave

boiough police court, though brief, is more
instructive than many volumes. In fourteen
years Hmith has been nine times convicted, and
sentenced to terms of imprisonment which

simplicity, that "he could not understand how
such a man was at large at all." It is clear that
if he had been kept in gaol lor the whole four

have been some nine mouths' liberty enjoyed iu
scattered intervals of a few days at a time, aud
the difference to tho public three quarters' extra
maintenance minus the saving represented by
the prevention of at least a scoie ot robberies.
He has now been committed for trial, with a
