Berthemj, Fxcnch Minister, arrlfed from Auburn to-day, where they hare been spending tilt Christmas holidays. Tbe Pnblle Debt Statement for December will ahow a decrease of about eight millions of dollars. The receipts from customi have been about eleren millions, and irom Internal rerenue about the same. Both are less than last month, but a no Interest was aid out during December, It Is probable the eduction of the debt will amount to the sum Udicated abore. E. B. Wa.hbarne had a lengthy Interview with Grant to-day, for irhat purpose is not known. It Is supposed, however, to have been with reference to the recent conversations in newspapers, wherein Grant's alleged views on various subjects are f et forth. Urant'a roller The General Makes Auotber Denial. The despatch la yesterday's Iribunt assuming to foreshadow General Grant's policy relative t J the distribution of the Federal patronage, ha been the theme of comment in political circle to-day. Grant's friends say it la without au' 'thorltyfrom him; and on the General's Dels? hown the despatch to-day, he said it was on a par with the despatches In the New York World which prophesy a rupture between him self and Congress. The Republicans wonder how the etory ever got Into the Tribune, and many suppose that tt had been intended for the World, and reached the Tribunn by mistake. It la manifestly untrue, so far as It assumes to speak the sentiments of Grant. FROM:' EUROPE. By Atlantic Cable. The Eastern Troubles. CoNiTiNTiKOPi,, Dec. 28, via London, Dec 29. Reports have been received here of a collision between a band of invading Greeks and a Turkish force in the Turkish provinoe of Albania, in which the Greeks were victorious. Another Marine Disaster. London, Dec. 29. The emigrant ship Starry Banner, for New York, was totally lost in a gale on December 21s seven hundred mile' west of the coast of Ireland. Forty-two people were savel on ratts and arrived at Boulogne, France. The capt liu and the rest of the erew and passengers, one hind red and twenty-two persons all told, are lost. Maior Uenrv Joy, late ot the United States army, and a passenger, was mainly instrumental in saving the lives of his fellow-pasenpcr. There Is no mention of such a vessel as the Starry Banner in the usufil marine authori ties, which suggests the probability thit later advices irom Europe will mitigate the above startling details. As an offset to the Iguominlous defiance thus bidden to the entire police force, a member of that mild dispobitioned and blue-cjated body positively succeeded In the capture of a noto rious professional known among his brethren as "SWKBT 80BNTED FLOWBRS." The idlosjncracy of "Sweet Scented Flowers," otherwise George Williams, is that he is always remarkably well dressed, and bears about with him a fragrance so fine and taint that nothing lives 'twixt It and odorlessness. The offense of "Sweet Scented" consists In having robbed a stage passenger, name! Dr John H. Douglas, of a diamond pin valued at $350. It is in vain that George puts in the plea ot belDg a clerk on a visit to the metropolis. lie is known to the police, who are congratulating each other upon bringing him into closer acquaintanceship with thcoi. NEW Y0RKISM8. from Our Own Correspondent. New York, Dec. 28, 18G8. THOU SHALT MOT COMMIT ADULTERATION ought to have been Introduced into the Decalogue as a moral and Mosaic semi-tone. It would not have bad much deterring influence, perhaps, upon the grocery and provision dealers of New York, but it would have enabled adulteration to be regarded as a peculiar and distinct crime. For, according to the Wor'd newspaper, this crime has, In New Tork, been carried to Its utmost verge. The evil called for redress; the readers of the Wor'd called for sensation; the proprietors of the World provided sensation In appointing a reporter.afias a "commissioner," to Visit the groceries In certain parts of the city, to purchase coffee, sugar, tea, apices, etc., and to have them subsequently weighed by the test scales of the official luspector, and subjected to the chemical analyses of Frolessor Seely. A commotion has therefore spread through New York and Brooklyn. It is discovered that atones are sold to us for coah; that ground peas are the last of the adulterated evils which de Bcend to us in coffee; that mouldy sblp'i-blscalt is a large ingredient of oar tea; and that oar tpices variously consist of "middlings," cayenne pepper, brown sea bread, common plaster, Ittrineric, yellow ochre, Venetian red, ivory black, peas, beans, etc. An explosion at tub Olympic theateb, Vfbere Humpty Dumpty has been on the boards for seveial hundred bights, was the occasion, on Saturday night, of considerable hubbub in front of the house. ... The explosion was caused by an escape of gas from the vault underneath the pavement. Only one man, tne gasman of the theatre, was hurt In his endeavors to ascertain the cause, and he was only singed about the eyebrows. The out break occurred about 6 o'clock in the evening. But about half past 9, when tbe theatre was fall the gas company sent a squad of men down to tear up a portion of the pavement over the vault and see that no danger re. sited. I am glad that the splendid ellllac! of Sirs. Scott-sllddons as " Beatrice.'' Last evening Mrs. Scott- Slddona commenced a re-engagement at the Academy of Muslo, and appeared as "BeVrlce" In Shakespeare's comedy of Much A.do About Nothing. An au dience which would nave appeared large at one of tbe theatres waa in alleudanoe. and an evi dent disposition waa shown to give the lady every enconragement. Tbe press of the city Is nearly unanimous with regard to the merits as well as tbe defects of Mrs. Slddons, and her status as an actress being thus fixed, the publlo v 111 know what to expeot la visiting Her per formances and the critics can afford to praise ber good qnafltles unreservedly without fear of being misunderstood. Mrs. Slddons decidedly improves on ac quaintance, aud as we remarked la our first notice, her prepossessing personal appearanoe attraoilve manners, and animated style will make her a favorite In spite of ber deficiencies as an artiste. "Beatrice," like "Rosalind," is a charaoter that requires abilities of a high order for a successful interpretation. The actresses who have obtained celebrity In these roles oan be counted on the fingers, and they all stand or have stood at the top of their profession; and In witnessing Mrs. Slddons' personations ltls Impossible not to make a mental comparison of ber aeting with that of her predecessors. We were better pleased with, Mrs. Slddons' Beatrice" than we were with ber "Rosalind." Her elocution was better, although still decidedly fanlty, but she appeared to try and apeak her sentences with Just emphasis Instead of alnglng them. The Immaturities of style aud manner of which we have spoken were also decidedly apparent, but Mrs. Sld dons' conception of the part was good, and there was a brightness and sparkle about her acting which went far towards redeeming her most palpable deficiencies. Mrs. Slddons is ambitious, or she would not attempt the line of characters that she does, and she has fine abili ties, or she would fall In spite of her handsome faoe and engaging manners; and If we deoline to consider her as a thorough artist at this time, we are not without hope that she will become one when she shall have passed her novitiate. Some of the passages last night were exceedingly well rendered, as for Instance the scene wbere "Beatrice" banters the masked Benedick," and In the fourth aot, where her womanly sympathies are aronsed by the accu sation against "Hero," and with all the ener gies of ber nature she protests that her cousin is Innocent. Her little love soene with "Bene dick," after the sad wedding party bad de parted, and her inciting him to challenge "Claudlo," were also excellent In fine, Mrs. Slddons has decided talents o ber own, which, if properly cultivated, will render it unnecessary for her to rely upon ber great grandmother's reputation, and If she will discourage the style of puffing that has been adopted in her case, and resolve to win the battle with fortune ou her own merits, she. will be much more likely to succeed. The play last evening was creditably acted throngbout, and Mr. Harklns, In particular, is entitled to very decided praise for bis persona tlon of "Benedick." In nothing that we have seen this gentleman do has be shown the same amount of ability. The part is one that aotors of more reputation than Mr. Harklns have failed In, and we are therefore tbe more lnollned lo commend him for a bold, dashing, and very effective piece ot acting. Mr.' Ilarttlni intro duced some new readings whlcU soaroely Im proved upon the aocepied text cspeulully as they were evidently adopted on the spur Of the moment to assist a defective memory. Mr. Davldge's "Dogberry" was good, bat not equal to bis "Touobsione." , . The City Auroaeinent.
