From Mr. Richard Grant White's article on
"English Grammar" we take the followiog
preference to the suppoitiausly unimpeachable
aLindley Murray:
The first punishment I remember having
received was for a failure to get a lesson in
English grammar. I recollect, with a half
gainful, hali'-amusing distinctness, all the
little incidents of the dreadful scene. How I
Sound myself standing In au upper chamber

feeing who put questions to me, which, for all
that I could understand of them, might as
Swell have been couched in Coptic or in ans
trit. How, when asked about governing, I
fenswered, "1 don't know," and when about
agreeing, "I can't tell," until at last, in de
spair, I aaid nothing, and choked down my
ttars, wondering, in a dazed, dumb fashion,
Ivjbether all this was part and parcel of
I that total depravity of the human
heart of which I heard so much,
low then the being to whom I apply no

iras doing God service said to me, in a ter
rible voice, "You are a stupid, idle boy, sir,
md have neglected your task. I shall punish
rou. Hold out your Laud." I put it out
alf way, like a machine with a hitch in its
gearing. "Farther, sir." I advauced it an
hcU or two, when he seized the tips of my
iDgers, bent them back so as to throw the
-ttlm well up, and then, with a mahogany
I uler, much bevelled on one side, and having

My kiiid and courteous re'lyrs wU' pr'JoDj
I hope, this reminiscence, in which I have in
dulged myself only because in some of the
comments, private as well as pnblio, which
have been made upon these articles, I have
hmu myrelf called a grammarian. God
forbid that I should be anything of the sort I
Thi.t I am unversed in the rules ol English
grammar (so called), I am not ashamed to
con less; for special ignorance is no reproaoh
when unaccompanied with presumption. Aud
what I cowfeas that I have not acquired, I
have not undertaken to teach. That task I
h ave to thoae who are capable of the subject,
and who feel its neoeseity.
If grammar is what it has been dofiaed as
being, the science which has fer its object the
laws which regulate language, the remarks
juet made cannot be justified; for, in this
seme, grammar is as muoh concerned with
words by themselves, with their signification
aud their origin, and with their rightful use
in those regards, as with their relation to each
other in the sentence; and it ia in this sense
but another name for the sclenoe of lauguage,
for philology. lUit, notwithstanding that de
finition, and its acceptance by some gramma
lians and some compilers of dictionaries, this
is not the sense iu which the word grammar
is generally used. Nor can the position whioh
I have now takm be maintained if grammar
is regarded as the science of the rightful or
reasonable expression of thought by language;
for grammar, iu this aspect, would be so closely
connected with logic as to be a part of it to all
intents and purposes.
!ut prammar, in its usual sense, Is the art
of speaking and writing a language correctly,
in which definition the word correctly means
in accordance with laws which are base i upon
the relations, not of thoughts, but of word,
and which are determined by verbal forms. It
is this formal, constructive grammar which
seems to me almoet if not entirely superfluous,
iu regard to the English language. Long ago,
before any attempt had been made to write its
grammar, that language had worked itself
nearly free of those verbal forms which control
linguistic contruction, and therefore free in
the same degree from the needs and
the control ol lormal, constructive grammar.
And, strangely, it was not until lioglish had
cast itself firmly aud sharply into its present
simple mould that scholars undertook to fur
nish it with a grammar, the nomenclature
and the rules of which they took from lan
guages the Latin and the Greek with which
it had no formal affinity, to which it had no
formal likeness, and by the laws of which it
could not be bound except so far as they were
the universal laws of human thought. Allu
sions to grammar aud to its importance as a
part of education abound in our early litera
ture. In a rhyming exhortation to a child,
written in the lilteenth century, these Hues
occur:
"My lcfo cliyld I kownol yo
To In i mo Uii vj t'iiM, Uiou iiwvse yc;
Ami liuve Uii till of tUy clensomie

'Xb ke godo hedi- qwat he wylle do.
And how u uowue substauiyfe
Wylle corde with a verbe aud a retalyfc,
1'otcHlo, 2osco, jick,
Eut, as appears Oik Its face, this exhortation
refers not to Eugluh but to Latin grammar,
which was the only grammar then taught or
thought of. That was the day of the esta
blishing and endowment of grammar schools
in England, but the grammar taught in them
was the Latin, and alterwards a little of the
Greek. Chaucer and Wycliffe had written,
but in English grammar schools no man
thought of teaching Kngliah. When, at last,
it dawned upon the pedagogues that Eugliah
was a language, or rather, in their significant
phrase, a vulgar tongue, and they set themselves
to giving rules for the art of writing and speak
ing it corretly, they attempted to form these
rules upon the models furnished by the Latin
language. And what wonder If for those were
the only rules they knew. Eut the con
struction of the English langnace was even
less like t! at of the Latin than Euglibh words
Were like Latin. From this heterogeneous
union sprang that hybrid monster known as
English grammar, before whose fruitless
loins we have sacrificed, for nearly three hun
dren years, our children and the strangers
within our gatej.
T. W. l'arsons contributes a little poem
entitled "Swallows." The Gula.ey Miscellany
has several interesting articles titled as fol
lows: "The Last of the 'Mammies,'" by John
listen Cooke; "So l'atrocino," by Theodore
Johnson; "A Charleston Vendue in 1842,"
by N. S. Dodge; "Mr. Grant White under
Discipline," "Are we Inferior?" a woman's
question, by Sarah E. Ilenshaw. The book
notices, art reviews, and gossip are appreci
ative and interesting. The first chapters of
Mrs. Edwards' new novel of "iSusan Field ng"
are given as a supplement.
There was some talk about an American
magazine having secured the advauce sheets
of Charles Eeade's new serial story, for which
he is to receive in all the sum of litty thou
sand dollars. It appears that The Uahny is
the successful competitor on this side of the
Atlautio for this literary prize, and it is an
nounced that the publication cf the story will
Ehortly be commenced. This, with Mr3. El
wards' new novel, will make The Gahiry for
ISO!) unusually attractive. Mr. Uichard
Grant White will contribute a seriea of papers
on "Americanisms." Dr. W. A Hammond
will furnish some rapors on diseases of the
mind and nerves. Mr. Eugene Ensou wil
i analyze the characteristics of the leading
j journalists of New York. Besides the scien
tific, literary, j radical, and economical artl-
cles, interesting stories aud humoious and
other sketches by well-known and popular
, writers will be furnitdied.
