Havana, Dec. l.r. The Government is actively
engaged in ecnrcliieg for political offenders, and
many arrests have been made in this city aud in
the interior. Some ot the parties arrested are
well known In the community. Count Valma
seda came to Havana on Sunday last trom
Nuevitas, to confer with the Captain-General,
and returned to Nuevitas yesterday with rein
forcements. Additional troops will he forwarded
to him. The steamer K-panola has arrived with
the reinforcements from Spain. Two steam
transports with 2080 troops are expected to
morrow. A battalion ot volunteers raised the
siege of the hospital at Holguiu, and the insur
rectionists withdrew trom the town.
It is expected that Count Valmaseda will
march immediately from Nuevitas, and make
f.n attack upon Bajamo, the sUon'ghold of the
revolutionists. Various and conflicting rumors
are iu circulation in record to the late military
operations in the interior. Cuoans hero say the
Government troops have Huffi-rcd a defeat, but
their assertions are mot confirmed by reports
from the seut of war.
Tne correspondent of the New York Times
at Bayamo reports that the character ot the war
is changing. The fepauish troops are disgusted
with the lenient and generous policy of the
Government in pardoning the rebels, and refuse
to give or receive quarter.
The revolutionists are confidently expecting
disturbances In Spain which will prevent the
Bending of reinforcements to Cubi. At the same
time the planters are more anxious to secure
their sugar crops than to fight, and are generally
f ympathizers with the revolution.
.Parties in Havana who advocate the revolu
tion claim that the insurgents are receiving
Etipplies of arras and even rein'oreements of
men Jroni the United States. It Is believed here
that an expedition iu aid of the insurrection is
organizing iu Nassau, but the Government has
takru steps to prevent H from reaching Cuba.
The reported death of FiguerJo is untrue.
Blue Diorw reports thnt since the defeat ot the
rebels at Mirou that parish has been perfectly
tranquil. It states thuL among the rebel otlict rs
kdled in that bault? were two persons repre
sented to have been colonels in the Mexican
aimy.
