ComiNelliug Mill mil Forbearance,
The Houston Telegraph administers some
most wholesome advice to the people of Texas.
It tells tliem tnere is no nope for the rooe il of
the lteconstruction laws: "Tne nation put
their seal of approbation upon the in in ihe late
election. Mr. Hcyniour would have executed
them had he been elected, as ne declared in his
stump speeches In the North before tbe elec
tion. Tnere Is no hope of our being restored to
the Union by any other plan than that pro
vlded by the Reconstruction acts of Congress."
The lcleorajh then proceeds to sayi "Our
duty is plain. Let us Indicate In every possible
way that we will accept such a Constitution.
Let the press proclaim it constantly. Let the
people express it by every means In their reach,
and if when the Constitution is made and we
find It such as we cannot accept without dis
honor, let us do It by all means, aud let every
one that can vote go to the polls and vote
for it."

for the corpse: but on bis return to the grave he
had prepared, he was surprised to find it filled
up, and a gntve-shaped mound over the spot
where he Intended to bury his child. Believing
that Home heartless person or mischievous boys
bad filled tbe grave In his absence to annoy
him, lie Immediately set about throwing out
tbe dirt aud preparing It a second time. When
be got as low as tbe boards which are usually
used to cover tbe coffin, and bad removed one
of them, he found to his horror and astonish
ment that It contained a new cotlin, aud that
the grave of his child had actually been stolen
in his absence. The collin contained the body
of a colored child, which had apparently died
the night before. He removed tbe strange
corpse to tbe corner of a feuce near by, and
buried his owh child in the grave prepared aud
recovered from some wretch who was too lazy
to dig a grave for bis dead baby, when he could
steal one conveniently.
Opium Eatiui; In Maine.
A Lewlslon (Maine) correspondent writes as
follow:
"Very few are aware how many habitual
consumers of opium, in some of Its forms,
there would be found, upon careful examina
tion, In our Htate, It is estimated by one of
our apothecaries that at least fifty habitual
opium eaters purchase their supplies of tbe
uruggists in mis city ana in Annum, rney uo
not all live at this point, but naturally come
here to trade. Home of them make quite large
purchbses of that opiate which is thought to
have lesplred the wonderful tales of the Ara
bian Nights. But for Us great cost, it Is proba.
ble thai it would be much more extensively
used than now. As it is, not a few country
grooers find ft necessary to keep a constant
supply for regular customers. Of those at pre
sent addicted to the opium habit In our State,
without donbt the largest part formed tbe
habit by first uslu opium as a medical pre
scription against pabV
A Trace of Old NiiperstUlons.
Another old superstition has been revived In
KuKland, and tbe story was told at a recant In
quest in Devonshire. A child bad beeu scalded,
and was taken lor cure to a wotneu who had a
charm lor scalds. The woman said to herself
as the charm: "There was two angels come
from the north; one of them brlug lire, tho
other frost; in frost, out hie." This she said
three times, and the Idea was that the frost
angel was to come and undo what the Ore angel
had done. Now this (says the Loudon News)
would be very pretty If read of In a legend, but
In actual fact It oomes to manslaughter.
Treated scientifically this child might bave
lived; treated only by this charm it died. It
seems strange to come upon the traces of suou
uperbtttlons In these days, but it will probably
require another generation to eradicate them
