TIIE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 12, lb?
NEW YORKISMS.
From Our Own Cmrenxmdent.
New York, Dec. 12, 19C8.
TIIK 80RO8IS
Cvery now and then gives one reason to believe
It baa not altogether died oat.
Tluis, It met some days ago at Delmoulco's,
and dlBcuHsed, as usual, tbe right or woman to
be and to do, bnt more particularly to be.
The subject wbloh excited the chief attention
Of the meeting, was the necessity of women
governing the fashions, Instead of allowing the
fashions to govern them.
A series of resolutions thereon was adopted
Unanimously.
Xhe Idea of tbe Sorosls Is to attempt not so
much a reform In fashion as freedom In It, the
permissibility to be In fashion or out of it,
without becoming a fit subject for obloquy.
Among the new memoers admitted were
Miss Virginia Tenny, Miss Dunning, Mrs. i
LoKler, and Mrs. Xobltt.
But, as I have lntlmatedjbcfore, those Horosla
meetings savor too much of tbe dilly-dallying
Of dilettantism rather than of the purposolul
efforts of concentrated womanly strength.
They smell too much of Phalon's perfume,
and too little of tbe fresh bree.es of nature.
IHK SEVENTH AND TWKNTY-HBCOND UBQI
MKNT.-i
gave their respective entertainments at the
Academy of Music and the 22J Keglment's
Armory, with almost equal eclat.
The 7th Regiment's arrangements were mos
perfect, Inasmuch as the cards were limited to
2500. Consequently, everybody had room with
out the danclng-tloor being disfigured by any
of those dreary-looking, deserted patches which
do sometimes occur when such an attempt at
excluslvlsm Is made.
At the Armory all were crowded and uncom
fortable, and many a woman of fashion was
yesterday bewailing the ruin of expensive satin
And lace.
The next grand ball that Is looked for Is that
Of Abel and Hlsley, the celebrated "balllsts" o
Philadelphia.
Uncommon efforts to acbleve uncommon
success have been made by these gentlemen,
and tbe Academy of Music, which they have
selected as the scene of their operations,
although It will not compare with the Philadel
phia Academy In chaste richness, Is so con.
Btruoted as to display to the utmost advantage
the toilettes of the audience,
A GRAND AND A GRANT
reception was that of Mrs. Marshall O. Roberts
to General Qrant.
Every portion of the Immense mansion was
fitted up with flogs and flowers. One thousand
guesia were present, and large as the houe Is,
It would have been overcrowded had not a
Special supper-room been erected over the spa
clous court-yard of Mr, Roberts as well as that
-of hla neighbor.
THE SEASON OF SNOW
having set In, all the skaters of New York are
anxious and trembling tor the Inauguration of
their favorite amusement.
Only one Individual, and that Individual a
young lady, ; has as yet been permitted to try
the new skating rinks, called the Empire Clty
on Second avenue, above Sixteenth street.
There bas been no skating yet at Central
Park, bnt should the weather prove propitious,
all the skating parks will be opea to-day.
On the 31st 01 tbe present month
JOHN T. HOFFMAN
is to be escorted to Albany, there to undergo his
inauguration as Governor,
He will be escorted by the 71st Regiment, and
the 71st Rei(tment will be escorted to the depot,
going, by tbe 22d Regiment, and from the depot,
returning, by the 12(b Regiment.
The latest news abont
TUB ERIE
Is contained In a succession of "cards" by Com
modore Ytinderbllt and Mr. James Flsk, Jr.,
from which It appeals that neither party had
"anytnlng to do with It."
This afternoon the
TENTH STREET STUDIOS
are to be opened, and the public are expected to
admire the works of such artists as J. (4. Krowu,
whose specialty is children; Mr. M. J. Ueude,

and tbe other "Tbe bait Marsh;" J. B. Irving;
Ulgnoux.wltb a "Frosty Morning;" tbe 1)6 Hans
brothers, who present studies from Long
Branch and tbe Hudsou.
The collection of new pictures Is not large,
and, tliouub the studios will probably be
crowded, there will be less than the usual
amount of interest manifested, owing to the

Autumn Piwino,-with the change of apparel In.

mount of sewing In every lcmlly. To meet ihl.i a
gcod sewing machine Is absolutely Indispensable
wtere health, comfort, and eoonomy are property
considered. Kvory head of a family wbo has not yet
donoso should add this essential requirement to his
home. sentleman remarked In our hearing re
cently that be regarded a Ubovbb ABakkbSkw
ino Machine as necessary to the proper cemp etlon
of a home as a good cooking-range or a timepiece.
He was right. Tbe 0 rover & Baker Instruments, w
may state, are preferred now universally on account
of their wider range for such work as Is required lu
families, their capacity for fine ornamental sewing,
and their greater simplicity, being more easily ope
rated than any other machines, and less Itablo to get,
