THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4, ldGS.'
MUSICAL AM) DRAMATIC
"Th Heir at I.n- nt Hi Arrh.
For the Bake of "Dr. Fan-rlosa," Colman's eo
tried y of 77u! Iieir tti-Lati Is performed oflener
than It otherwise would be, but even without
'Dr. Patiglosa" It would be oneof the most pleas
Ingof the class of plays to which ll belongs. Like
Wl Of Colmeu's works, It acis well, the charao
ters are lifelike, the humor Is genuine, tta tone
Is healthy, and the moral la sufficiently
pointed. If well represented, The Ileir-ut-Law
in an excellent enltrtalnnii nt, and the evident
delight or the large audience last evening at
the Aroh wai In the highest degree compli
mentary to Mrs. Drew ana her company. The
play was given in Ann style throughout, and
this artlstlo completeness as a whole la, we
think, even more worthy of commendatory
BOtlee lliaa the merits of any one personation.
Mr. Warren we presume to have retired, so
that;there now remain upon the stage only
Mr. Joseph JefTorson and Mr. John 8. Clarke as
representatives of "Dr. Pangloss." Or the two
Vf e prefer the performance of Mr. Clarke In this
part. Mr. Jefferson carries the subdued style
Of tola "Kip Van Winkle" more or less Into al,
his personations, and In many Instanoea we
admit that It Is really more effective than
Clarke's giotef-qnenenB. Hut Clarke has made
B few characters peculiarly hH own, and "Dr
rangloss" Is one of them. There Is a rlohness
and exuberance of comlo humor In his delinea
tion of the Impecunious philosopher that
Snakes It more Irresistibly laughable than
Jefferson's, and which never fails to tell upon
the audience.
Mr. Craig attempted thin part for the first
time lust evening, and as he tfoes not too often
lave opportunities to appeur in role that
It should bo LIh ambition to study, If he wishes
to mako his mark as a comedian, we were
(omewhat curious 10 see what he would make
of It. Mr. Cialg's best things heretofore havo
teen In the burlesque Hue, but burlesque Is
easier t) act than legitimate comedy, and
more certain of winning applause without
much effort, and, while tempting, It is danger
or s to a young aotor as being apt to inspire him
Vlth a higher estimate of his abilities than dis
interested judges will concur In, and as giving
him a fictitious popularity which will be likely
to fall hltn when he inokt needs it. Mr. Craig
Ib, we believe, ambitious, and we are pleased
whenever be tries himself In parts like that of
'Dr. Pauglcss," in which our finest comedians
Iiave dlstiuguisbed themselves, Mr. Craig's
performance lat evening was very
creditable, especially for a first at
tempt; and we hope that the pleasure
Which Mrs. Drew's "old comedy weeks" have
Afforded to many of the inoet intelligent patrons
Of the -theatre will induce her to give us some
more of the same sort before the season is over,
If for no other reason than to allow Mr. Craig
to show what there is in him as an actor of
legitimate comedy. There was nothing original
about Mr. Craig's "Dr. Paugloss," nor was it to
beezpeoted or perhaps wished for that there
Should be. The usual points were made with good
effect, although be failed to equal Clarke's ex
quisite drollery and Jefferson's Bparkllng wit.
Some of Mr. Craig's peculiar mannerisms were
apparent throughout the performance, and he
missed the exquisite little touch of pathos with
whloh Jefferson lights up the passage where
."Dr. PaDgioss" returns the bank note to
yenlel," and receives a reward which elicits
the quotallou "Honesty is thn best policy." In
d ed, it is this bit of true art that makes Jeffer
son's "Dr. Pangloss" 6ttpeilor to Clarke's, even
IX it Is not s J laughable.
Mr. Everly's 'Ztklel Homespun" was excel
lent, and, as a really superior piece of acting,
we do not recollect ever seeing him do any
thing equal to it. Mr. Mac hay made a capital
.... II TA ..... t l...nl..n ) I .1
Thayer as "Deborah Dotvlau" was good, asshe
always is. Mr. Wallls, a very careful and pains,
taking actor, who does not always get as much
part Of "Kenwlck;" and Mr. Utrtou Hill acted
' with good effect as "Dick Dowlas."
Mrs. Drew's personation of "Cicely Home
pun" was artistic, and some passages she ren
dered In a style that few other actresses are
capable of. But as a whole wo did not like it ad
well as that of some performers of less reputa
tion. Mrs. Creese as "Caroline Dormer" was
graceful, but a trifle inanimate. Mr. James
aotod the part of "Henry Morelaud" very care
lessly, Indeed, it could not properly be called
acting, and if be knew his lines he often filled
to speak them so that the audience oou'.d un
derstand what he was saying. Mr. James is
oneof the most unpromising members of the
Arch street company. We have seen him act in
a way that seemed to Indicate that he possesses
ability, and on that account we are inclined to
condemn him when he plays in as shiftless a
manner as be did last evening. Mr. Bvnder.
who took the part of "Steadfast," Is open to
considerable Improvement, but he Is mora
painstaking than Mr. James, and he is likely
to become more popular If he uelleves in the
maxim that "Whatever is worth doing is worth
tloiug wen."
