Explorations or Central Asia.
At tbe last meeting of the Royal Geographical
f-'ociety in London, b.r Roderick Murchisou said
the attention of tho society bad been strouuly
drawn ot late towards Central Asia, and particu
larly to the vast regions whicb, bordered the
uoi ilieastern and northwestern frontiers of
British India. The principal region in tbe
northeast embraced the country l.vmg betweeu
Assam and Szechuen, tbe most westerly pro
vince of China. A warm de9ire was expressed
by a committee of the British Assoeiatio-i, as
well as by the Council of tho Geographical
S ciety, thr.t that intervening space of about
two hundred and titty miles only should be
explored, in order to aeertam if there De
practicable passes throuuh the high mountains
aud wild tiacts which separated the upper
watt rs of the Ynuet.-e-kbmu from tho Brahma
putra at Us gieat bend uear Sudiya. Although
as jet no positive eiloit has been mado to soivo
tiie important problem, tbe Iuuiau auinotities
are making, efforts to open a route of traffic
along a more southerly Hue between British
Buimah and tho great Cniuese province ot
Yuuuhu. now essentially Independent of Chiueso
rule, and most desirous ot establishing a trade
with the British settlemeids ou the lrawaddy.
Of still moie pressing importance, however,
Iban an acquaintance with the regions alluded
lo, is un exj loratlonof the va-t and unexamined
tracts on the northwest, fur beyond lh tiiouta
i ies of ihe Upper ludus, or between Pcsiiaur
and Jdlalabad on the south, and the centres ot
trade nud population at YarkanU Kashgar. The
main object is lo uedne the physical churacter
of tbe vast elevated plateau culled Pauir, or
"Roof of the World," Iroui which the Oxus aud
Zaratsban take their rise, and from wti.cn the
lrdty clams, the Kuen Luu, the Himalaya aud
llir.rioo Koosh, radiate. Iu 18(57, Sir Roderick
ureed the essential importance of such
knowledge, to b acqu red equally by the
Ru-s au aud British Governments, anJ he then
said that tbis greao table land or watershed
onebt'to hi constituted the nu'ral ground
between tbe two emp res, and to bo considered
us a broad zone to be loiever interposed between
Fastern Turkestan, towards which Russia has
l ow advarced, and the most northern limits of
England's ludiau possessions.
With a view to taktus the first step in this
desirable eploration. tho conned Ol tba Geo
graphical Society sent out laetspriug u practised
traveller, Lieutenant, llaywurd, to traveide this
legion from Peshawar.
Ten jears ago a man named Jacques Con

beautiful Italian girl in New Orleans. He was
convicted of the crime, but escaped punish

to death by tbe phantom of a flBhltBS skeleton
which he imagined always by LU Bide, seated
