0 THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 18C8. THK DECEMBER MAG1ZIXE3. Th TfooTel of "Cypher," whloli Increases In Interest as it progresses, opens the December amber of the Galaty. Mr. Eugene Hanson baa a discriminating artiole on "Foe and Haw thorne," whom he couples together as the only two literary men, among Americans, who had the sense of beauty and the artist's con science in a supreme degree. Mr. Edward A. Pollard gives a ehapter in the history of the late war, in a paper on the "Confederate Congress.'' "One Too Many" Is a pleasant story by Caro line Chesebro. "Women as Pnysioiana," by Mary A. E. Wager, glres an account of the efforts made by women to obtain medical edu cation, and the snocess whioh has attended them as practising physicians and as attend ants in hospitals. "Tied Up by the Thamb3," by T. A. Dodge, is the story of a soldier who did not like discipline, and who was broken in by the rather rough style of punishment prao. tised in the army by some ofiisers. A sketch of Mrs. Frances Anne Kemble is illustrated by a portrait, by Mr. W. J. Uennessy, which is anything bat complimentary to the lady. "Acquitted," by II. II., is a rigorous poem. Miss Jane Q. Austin's story of "The Treasure of the Three Kings" is interesting. Mr. It. II. Stoddart contributes few graceful lines of Terse addressed "To a Friend, with a Vase." Mr. Richard Grant White discourses about "Words and their Uses." "A Barcarolle," by LUlle Nel son, is a clever little poem. In the "Ga laxy Miscellany," "Who Took Tioonderoga f" .by 15. F. D., is an attempt to show that Ethan Allen is not entitled to all the credit that has usually been given to him for his part in that transaction. Mrs. Harriet Fres oott BpofTord reviews Mr. A. R. Hope's "Look About Boys," and D. H. Jaynes, in "Exit the Blonde," discourses to the follow ing effect: The fair-haired woman is lively, loyous, quick witted, versatile, eloquent not in the laugiug-a of the lips merely, but in expression and acnon kind, svmiatheuc, and warm-hearted. Her Impulses ,aie sudden at well as strong. She olWn fulls In love at first tight. She is not bold and indelicate in ttie avowal of tier atl'ection, but at the proper moment says "jet" frankly, and meant it but flic may cuauge her mind In oi tier words, there is, as a rule, a slight ten dency to nckleueis in the blonde. Tutre is too little iron in her blood. But wnen the dark haired and daik-eyed woman lores well, she loves, and with her Lore Is love forovermore. Men admire tug blonde, court her (oeiety, bask with delight in her unities, driuk. .in with eagerness the music of her voice, are lascioated by her beauty and her wit but they more fre quently seek in marriage the less brilliant brunette. It hut already been stated that the increase of dark hair it greater in the city than in the countty. The increase ot cities amouq us must, therefore, give a still turther impulse to the melanosis now goin? on. The lair haired type requires for itt full development the Ireutt puve air of the fields and forests. The atmosphere and modes of life ia-eparable from towns are unfavorable to the saLguiuous element of the constitution. The bilious temperament thrives, llore iron finds its way into the blood and to the hair, aud less sulphur; though just why or how this tnkes place it may not be so easy to determine. The result of the physiological change now poms on here, unices checked by the imervcn tion of new and unioreeen cause?, will be the establishment on this continent of a hortugene ous and peculiar people. Physically, the coming ninu of this New World will be charac terized by a well-developed osseous system; deute, firm muscle; rather high cheek bones; prominent, but haucUoine tcatures; d'.tric, strong, aud abundant hair; black, brown, or hazel eye; and a dark complexion a conformation liiditatlve of great strength of constitution, endurance, and capacity lor work. Mentally, he will be ob'erviojr, elear-hea'led, energetic, perpeveriup, steadfast; quick to decide and ready to act; teU-ieliuut, polite, courteous; refined in mans era, if not always delicite in perception; ambitious; food of po ver; addicted to coLquest; olten irritable, headstroner, and domineering; jealous of his honor; not particu larly averse to strife; firm in friendship; lailtiful to his trust; constant in love; and terrible in hie enmity. In verbtl expression he will be direct and emphatic, And his eloquence will be that of earnestness and conviction; and in action, his blows will be both rapid aud heavy. 'i lie future American woman win oeauais baired, dark-eyed, litoe-limbad, agile, elegant, and commanding brunette; only moderately plump in person, and finely proportioned and vipoious. The face will iacliueto the oval form, With features fiutly cut and somewhat more piominent than are seen in the European races from which we are inniuly descended; bat neither angular nor coarse, and full ot expres sion. In her mental character, she will be imaginative, Impassioned, earnest, Boriou-", truthful, sincere, proud, and high-spirited. Ardent and devoted in love, unchanging iu all her attachments, and with clear perceptions ot duty, fhe will be a helpmate worthy of the name one to be lovtd, honored, aud trusted everywhere and nUa.VB. Happy tue man of the future who shall call her wile 1 "Ebb Tide" and "Soft Brown Eyes," by C. P. Crouch, complete the poetical contribu tions to this number. "Drift Wood," "Litera ture and Art," and the "Nebulie," oontain a number of items of interest. lancing prepared, and you notice tho women buttering the brtad to as to save their lords and masters the sllphtest unneeMsary exertion. An American husband might eat dry bread forever It be were unwilling to butter it himself. Then you catch stftht of a woinaa on nr knee lacing or unlacing a roan's boots, bo menial a service would scandalize the best American wives. If an Englishman want a pipe, It is the woman who fills it and bands htm the light; If hit pot ned replenishing, it it the woman who pro cures and pours out the ale; it there be an errand to be done, it is the woman who trots off while the nin loafs or rests at home. In short. Enth'h women belonging to what ar called the lower classes ere evidently the tervantt of the men, while In America the men ar as evidently the servant of the women, only that this latter tervice being that of the stronger to toe weaker, never seems like servitude, even In the humblu-t families, but takes the nobler forms of polite nets, solicitude, and duty. But this sketch has daiker tints. These lower class women not ouly perform menial services, but they are treated far wore than any other tervants in the world. Many of them are married only in ntme. From various causes, but intinly from lack of educa.ion, the marriage rites are lift hlly esteemed by thee poor women or rather not by the wonen, who would cve almost their lives lor honest marrinae lines, but by their fathers aud the fathers ot their children. As among the negroes of the South before emancipation, a mau and woman asree to live tcweiher; tbetr itlntives, friends, and ueltihbors acknowledge the implied rela'ionship by c tiling the woman "Jurs.," and the upper classes rare nothing about it, since It does not Immediately couccrn them, aud is pretty lure to provide another generation of laborers tor the work of the future. In the South emancipation had to be atteuded by the solemnization of thousands ot marriages, whion niiuht have been made in heaven years before, but bad not beeu leca'ly ratified on earth; and so in England, auy genuine reform among the lower orders will have to be commenced by a joint crusade of clergymen and teachers the former tor the parents, the latter for the chil dren. At present, all concerned accept the situation; the nnn.arried couples congratulate themselves upon having saved the parson's lees, and spei d more thau the fees in drink to celebrate their economy; aud the womeo, having lost their virtue, often find themselves linked with brutes who hud no virtue ol their own to lose, aud who eoou deprive them of every comfort in life. A "reformed Planohetteist" makes some "Confessions" tending to convict that littlo instrument of huinbuggery. The story of "The New Timothy" is continued. The other arti cles are "Eustaoie's Story;" "The Man whom Everybody Snubbed;" the whole of Lord Lyt. ton's new drama of The Rightful Heir; "The Editor's Easy Chair;" "The Editor's Drawer;" and "The Editor's Book Table." Received from T. B. Peterson & Brothers. The Riverside Magazine for December con cludes the second volume. The contents are as follows: "The Vision of John the Watch man;" "Two Lives in One," concluded, by Yieux Moustache, with an illustration by A. P. Close; "How a Mouse Kept Christmas;" "My Debut as a Sportsman," by F. J. Millsf with two illustrations by the author; "A Year Among the Indians," concluded, by Martha M. Thomas; "The First Snow," by Abby Sage, with an illustration by Conrtland Hoppin; "Doings of the Bodley Family;" "Nathan's Pig," by Horace E. The first number of the new volume of the River side will contain a new story by Hans Chris tian Andersen, entitled "Court Cards;" also a sketch of this great story-writer, by a per sonal friend, and a portrait. A number of other attractive novelties are promised. THE OLD WORLD. Commerce of ttio Itiircrent European A at to iin. An interesting article on "Charles Loring Elliott" has a portrait of that distinguished artist at its head. Mrs. Dinah Muloch Craik concludes her fine novel of "Tho Woman's Kingdom." Major J. W.
