look and intelligence to which a mounted man
I alone ia t qual.
I Dr. Johnson haa deHoed a drasroon ai a kiad
of Boldier that lights indifferently ou foot orou
horseback; and to little fc-aa this mounted in
fantry found favor in the eyes ol European
nations, that the dragoo-i, as iu our service,
baa tmlrely lost his origiu;l character, and
become a heavy cavalry soldier, hnd nothiug
else. Neither his equipment nor his training
is suited for the woik for which, in the first
instance, he was designed. The truth Is, that
tbe parade and dash of cavalry are so muoli
more exeiiing and pleasant than the duller
work of infantry, that preB3are is put on by
tbe officers commanding troops of this nature,
and by degrees they are assimilated in all but
name to pure cavalry. We see this tendency
in every branch of the service in our
field battbdes of artillery striving for the
il rapidity and system of herse artillery, in
our volunteer artillery quitting their true
position as garrison gunners to become field
astillery, aud in the universal desire to ba
mounted which runs throughout the army.
Yfft the late American war has taught no les
ion more distinctly than that the dragoon, or
mounted rillemen, is of the greatest value.
The doctrine taught by Marshal Marmout,
who savs that nothing is more useful than the
I establibhrnent of dragoons (who should not
ue perveneu liuru tueir original cutracierj,
and by Napoleon, who wrote that cavalry
Should be furnished with iu jjrms, aud knotf
J bow to maiiojuvre on foot, receives its latest
continuation from the practice of tue American
war oi recession.
Colonel Dennison thinks that cavalry
ehould be divided iuto two distinct species
heavy cavalry, or cavalry of the line, and
light dragoons, or mounted r'lles. Of the for
mer there was little or none iu the Coufede-
urate army, and had there been it would have
found but, little employment. General Fitz
uugh Lee, in a letter to Colonel Dennison,
jays "1 tachew heavy cavalry the cuirassier
tans pair. They can only be employed during
ictual conflict, and in this country, from its
topographical features, opportunities seldom
cccur lor charging with large masses of
cavalry, I ke Murat and 13-issiorea at EyUu,
or Seidhtz at Zorndorf, for instance; so sel
dom, indeed, that the expense does not jus-
tity keeping up such organizations while
awaiting bitch opportunities. I participated
in every battle foucht between the two pnn-
jt cipal armies in Virginia during the late war
Mllbetween the North and South, aud cannot
llrecall a single instance where cavalry en
Ifmasse was employed on the battle-field, save
in a few instances against oavalry itself."
And Major-General Uosser dismisses the
subject more tersely in these words: "Nei
i i V 1. . . ' 1 4 . . 1 a
l tavalrv in the late war; it was all mounted
trifles. Cavalry was not used on the battle-
fields as Ney and Murat used it under the
1 great Napoleon; and the rtason was, that it
wbb not cavalry.'
It ia useless, then, to seek in that four
years' struggle.Jeo'fruitful of interest in strate
gical and tactical science, for any examples of
the use of cavalry as the offensive arm on the
battle-Held; but we may learn much of the
employment of genuine dragoons both aa
cavalry and infantry. One of the first pointa
to attract notioe in the use of dragoons aa
eavalry is th? superiority conceded to the re
volving pistol over the sabro an idea which,
as Colonel Dennison savs, will be scouted by
ttOEt cavjdry officers as absurd, and contrary
'to the whole traditions aud genius of the ser
vice, let we have here collected a number
of instances in which tho success of the pistol
land tbe comparative failure - of

Jhs twenty-lour were killed and twelve
grounded by the revolvers of tie Confederates.
iOn this point, ako, Gener.d Stephen D. Lee
Writes: "The sword is a good weapon, though
but little Uffd during the recent war. It haa
lost much of its effective net-s by the improved
revolver, with whioh the cavalryman will
make the dashing charge with more confidence.
My expnieuce was that tbe cavalryman was
timid with his sabre in fighting against the
revolvers, and for the leat.1 excuse will drop
the eabie for the revolver, tvud in many in
stances is comuelled to do so in actual coufliot
iDy irregularities of groun l, obstacles, etc I do
not see well now the sword can he dispensed
with permanently, aa some such weapon ia
required in case ammunition fchouid ba
'exhausted; but if any weapon ia to be dis
pensed with, I should say the sabre in pre
ference to the li Ho or revolvers. These two
latter, rifle or revolvers, are indispensable. Iu
very instance under my observation, the re
volver replaced tho sabre with the mvah of
the trooper, ai d against the enemy." Nor Is
.Esclh-h experience without instances to the
jiame effect. When Captain Jenyns, of the
iluth Urn-purs, was making his way back to
phe English lines after the charge of the Light
Brigade at Jialaklava, on a horse which was
'mortally wounded, an officer and two sol
lliera of Rnsiiiau cavalry opposed hia progress.
With bis revolver he held tbtu some time
Ut lav; but at lerclh the officer dashed in
upon him with his sabre, only to be shot down
Wore getting within leacti, when the other
i(wo allowed him to proited without further
olestatiou.
The author of "Modern Cavalry" holda the
SpeDcr carbine, one of those inagaatae armi
ci taiuing peven or eight cartridges, whioh
ran be fired in the lnoat rapid succession
wiibent reloading, to be the wenpon for this
branch of the service; to which should b
added two revolvers, and a sabre so arrauged
as to be left with the horse when the cavalry
man is dismounted. Iu this he ia supported
by GeueralH Stephen and Fi'jihugh Lee, the
toimer of whom considers that "with this
equipment the cftvalryuim ia always ready for
tbe e)iarg with. con'lMeuoe, aud oan always
be med difm'ninted either against cavalry or
infantry." Men thus armed, if only properly
felccud for intelligence, strength, and power
of ririfDg, aud not taken irrespective of special,
qualifications, as at present in our service, are
capable of performing the mist brilliant ser
vice either aa cavalry or infantry. Lotion
