Earthquake in New Jersey
New York, Nov. 16. Four distinct shocks of
earthquake wete felt in Elizabeth, N. J., last

continued some twenty seconds, and chairs,
tables, beds, and other articles of furniture
swayed to and fro.
An oflicial publication emanating from
the French -Government gives the following
figures as representing the present annual
produce of tobacco in the world, and the
quantity consumed in France; Asia, 155,
OW.000 kilogrammes; Europe, 141,000,000;
Amerioa, 124,000,000; Africa, 12,000,000; and
Australia, 400,000. The present annnal con
sumption in France is, iu snuff, 7,7U!),471
kilogrammes; iu tobacco for smoking,
18,440,911); for chewing, 75o,025. The con
sumption of cigars is, of cigars at 20 cents,
2t-,(V0 kilogrammes; at 15 cents, 63,0W; at 10
cents, 17S,0U0; and at 5 cents, 2,734,585.
The Minister of Public Instruction in
France has caused an inquiry to be made as to
the sanitary condition of the various lyces of
the capital. The subject had become one of
interest to parents. The ollluially declared
result is expcted to satisfy them. Acoordine
to the report, C students out of 18,000 die in
the course of a year; that is, 1 in 8000. On
the other band, the deaths of children of like
ages that is, between 10 and 15 years in
Paris amount to 5 in 1000 annually.
