REVIEW OF NEW BOOKS.
Occupations of a Retired Life. By Edward
Garrett. Published by Little & Gay, Bos
ton. Philadelphia Agent: A. Winch, No.
505 Chesnut street.
This work originally appeared serially in
Good Words, and It was first published in
America in LitteWt Living Age, whioli circum
stances constitute a double gnarantee of ex
cellence. "The Oooupations of a Retired Life"
is one of the very best religions novels of the
day that we have seen. There is an air of
reality about the story which almost persuades
as to the belief that it is what it purports to be,
a transoript of aotual experiences. The author
is in earnest, bat never dull, and he contrives
o secure the attention of the reader from the
commencement to the end of a narrative which
never falters or grows uninteresting. We
commend this work to the lovers of really
good reading.
From J. B. Lippinoott & Co. we have re
ceived "The Little Spaniard," the fourth vol.
ume of the "Helping Ilaud" series, by May
Mannering, and "Dotty Dimple out West,"
the third of the "Dotty Dimple" series. Pub
lished by Lee & Shepard, Boston. These
pretty little stories were originally published
in Our Hoys' and Girls' Magazine, and the
young people who were interested in them
when they appeared serially will doubtless be
pleased to reperuse them in book form. The
volumes are nicely printed and bound, and
they will be attractive additions to juvenile
libraries.
James S. Claxton,' No. 1214 Chesnut
street, sends us "Edna Willis," "Graoe
Roche'B Legaoy," and "Jem Morrison" three
of his recent publications for juvenile
readers. These stories, like all Issued by this
house, are written with the design of com
bining instruotion with entertainment, and
they may safely be recommended to parents
and Sunday School teachers who desire to put
good, wholesome reading in the hands of
children.
We have reoeived from T. B. Peterson &
Brothers "The Acts of the Kings," published by
G. W. Carleton, New York. This is a political
squib, written by J. Marshall Ilarmer, asso
ciate editor of the Southern Opinion, and origi
nally published in the oolumns of that journal.
It is a burlesque on the biblieal narrative, and
if designed to be a satire on the military gov
ernment in Virginia since the oollapss of the
Rebellion, and is a silly affair both in design
and txeouticn. The author promises addi
tional chapters La the second edition of the
work, if one is demanded, which we are In
clined to think will not be the case, for we
have found "The Aots of the Kings" to be
very dull reading, with the profanity unre
lieved by a BlDgle gleam of wit or genuine
humor.
LITERARY NOTES.
Old English Wllrt Flower.
The Loudon publislitha house ol Warne & Co.
h iiiBt puhlisoed an iijt-reitirig volume called
'Old English Wild Flower," by Mr. J. T. Bur
(tofi. The author treats ot some disputed qnea
Hons in botatij, and Incidentally mentions the
introduced" water weed called water thyme or
Canada weed, which was tlrst been in the Duusp
Loch in 184a, next in the Orand Jauction Canai
ucsr oiarxei uaroorougn, then iu tlie Trent aud
in the Can, aud now it Is found In nearl?
every river nd stream. "It has bet largely
propagated by boatmen's Ignorance ot its habits,
lor each of its turee-lobcd whurlj lis tho powvr
of Krowiua; even when floating don stream:
aud the toothed foliage enables It to catch any
Ulamentot conicrvn; or weed, aud ancnor Itselt
to beein anew life." In arable land lu Kurlattd
an almost kindre.l uuhauce Is the dodder, a
? ura. lie weed uprt-ading ftom plant to plaut, and
eating red thread around the stetm o( lucct n.
clover, vetches, an i other like crops. At Interval
it thows small pink bdlike flowers, and it de
stroys all vegetation witti which it comes ia con
tact. Mr. Iturgejs mentions two varieties ol thlj
plant, the Europtea and the lipithymum, which
sm to be Indigenous.
Speakiup ot the derivations of flower names,
Mr. Butgejs Buds some suegested by the ap
pearance ot the plants. Fumitory, or "Fume de
Teirp," is ranted from the vapor-like appearance
winch i's pale ereen leaves give to the naked
soil. The name Dtndclion, and its botnulcal
synonym, Leontodon, point to the resemblance
of that plant's deep cut leaves and back -turned
lobes to the Lion's tooth, "dent dc lion." The
Fritillary Rets Us name from "liltUlus," a dice
box, because ol the chequered reddish-purple
squtires on the tulip-shaped bell of that flower,
l'he "loxglove" Is proved to be the folk's or
filry'sirlove, by the use of the nimes "lairy
thinibloa" and "fairy bt'llV to designate the
tame flower in Mttnsier. "Carduus," the seueric
Latin name of the thistle tribe, is from the
Celtic "ard," a poiut. O.her names have refer
ence to virtues bupposed to be inherent, "llo
rnge" is supposed to be a corruption of "cor"
or "courage," because of tho cordial quali
ties with whicn it is credited. Pliny said
that U dispelled sadness, aud if taken with claret
cttp or cool tankard wc partly believe him. Such
names 83 salvia verbinaca, Old English clarv,
tell their own tale. The names Centaurca and
Achillea, applied to the Corn Bluebottle and the
Milfoil, are allusive to the connection of Chiron
and his heroic pupil with the gifts of healing.
Other names, such as Sautoin, St. Johu'-wort,
Samphire (St. Pierre or bampeter), seem to ori
ginate in suprtstitiou. Tue samphire never
grows but on the seashore, yet never grows
within reach of the waves. No one who has
chanced on Professor Burnet's anecdote of a
enstaway sailor finding new heart and hope
when he grasped a samphire root on a ledge of
rock, will not lorget the assoctatloo of this plant
with Peter and "Petra " "Lidy's Bedstraw,'' as
Mr. Burgees claims to have discovered from the
fact that Iilih peasant girls use the xcirular
whorls o- this plant for a rosary, is really
"Our Lady's Jteadstraw." There is something
curious about the name Juniper. If we cannot
trace it up to its source, we can establish It ai a
namegiver to the spirit which is flavored by its
berries. "Gin ' is an abbreviation ot "Geneva,"
our AnplicUni for "Genievre," the French name
of "Juniper."
The poetical and legendary a'snciations of
wild tioweis are interesting, such m that ot the
wood-orrel with fat. Patrick, the white dog-rose
with the Heuse of York, and of the perennial
daisy with the unfortunate Margaret of Anjou,
and perhaps with a more lovable Mareraret
Marguerite of Talols, the friend of Calviu and
Eiamus. The thistle which originated the
Scotch order and emblem was the beautiful
cotton thistle, on which the Danish invader trod
to Liu cost, when his cry of pain awoke the
fccots to defense and to Victory. The milk
tl'istle (Carduus Marianus) has white veins
running down its larger leaves, which are said
to have originated in a drop of the Virgin's milk,
and a kindred fancy ascribes the blue spot ou
the leal of the spotted persicaria to a drop of our
Saviour's blood as lie toiled op the Via Dolo
losn. Danewort, or dwarf elder, is said only to
p prin g sp where blood was tplit iu the Danish
wars. "Prcruorse Scabious" is so called because
Of the fable "that the Devillc begrudged niun
so good a herb aud bit away part of the root."
Upou this part of bi subject Mr. Burgess has
be.itowed considerable pains, as heh.s also in
tracing home the inmates of gardens 'to the sea
shore nd the hedgerow. Celery, beet, aspara
gus, cabbage, kale, and fennel have left for
homes of civilization the coast and salt
marshes where their wild orlgiuals exist to tell
of what they were. Lavender and the Pteouy,
too, bsve their elder brethren by the seaside.
And we may any day at the riht seasons
chance upon the earlier types of the Saponoria,
Auagaliis, Diautbus, and Plcotee ot our garden,
it wc keep our eye open in our walks aflelJ.

How a Ilnltlmore Blob Assailed a Pits
tttiiger Train Scaudaloim Trcittiiieut
of tlie Passengers.
The train which left Washington at 6-40 P. M.
yesterday tor Philadelphia, was attacked in
Biiltimore about 7 o'clock, by one of the most
villainous aud cutthroat looking mobs that ever
disgraced even Baltimore. The train consisted
of three passenger cars from Washington, tilled
chiefly with male passengers, but a number of
lady passenger were in the rearmost cars.
At Annapolis Junction, one ot the lads who
visually belt newt-papers on the train between
Baltimore and Washington commenced taking
a vote for the Presidency among the male pas
sengers, and after going through the train, he
leported titty votes forseyniour and Blair, forty
two tor Grant aiid Colfax, aui seven neutral, or
who declined to tell how they intended to vole
at the Presidential election.
The dcbiin ot taking this vote was doveloped
when the train reached Bulumorw. It was evi
dently intended to "tpot" the Kepuplicans, to
make them the marks for the mob iu the pre
concerted attack on the train which took pluco
at the President street depot. Many of the
passengets oi the train to Baltimore were way
travellers, who generally voted for Blair, aud ou
the ariival ot the train in Baltimore uxoA of
them lett at Camden Station, leaving the te
mainiiig pastengcrs chiefly Republican.
The cars were drawn through Baltimore by
horoeB separately, and as the hrt car, iu which
were the "smokers," was baked ou the east side
of the President street depot, it was almost
instantly taken pOaseB'hm ot by a mob of roughs,
upwards of a hundred, who leaped upon the
fiout and rear plutiorais, and oecupied both
doors of exit, so a to make sure of the passen
gers iutide. The mob oultiJe crowded against
the windows, howling lor feeymour and Blair.
It was the Rebel jell repented, which was he Ard
on many a battle-tield of the Reocllion.
The rufliuns Inside commenced an examiaation
of each passenger as to where he lived, If he was
going to Philadelphia to vote, and ending with
a threat that If any Grant and Cul'ax men were
in the cat they would hare their brain blown
out.
A party of three or four accosted William
Tbo-ntoii, a Pbiladelpbiau, and Assistant Pur
veyor at the Metropolitan Hotel, Washington,
who was silting quieily in his seat, in this wise:
. lho leader preteuted a cocked revolver, which
be htld directly against Thornton's mouth,
sajlrei "Where do you live? Arc you going
to Philadelphia to vetef Tell me, quick, or I'll
blow your brains out," addiug a horrid oath.
Thornton begged them to spare his life, and to
niollily them told them he was one of Bill
McMullin's crowd, in Philadelphia. The man
with the pistol said: "You lie I 1 believe yon
are one of the radicals going to Phllaiei-
pbla to vote; and If I thought jou were, I would
kill you right here!"
lie added in a threatening manner, "Woo do
you know in Philadelphia that cau vouch for
you? Tell me somebody I know in Philtdel-
Ehla, or I'll kill you," still holdinr; the pistol to
is lace.
. Thornton held up his hand and swore that he
told the truth, when the ruffians left him bag
ging him to "excuse" them for havtug treated
one of "Molly's crowd" o roughly..
' A colored man, who sat lu the rear of Mr.
Thornton, was next assailed with black-jacks
over the head, by three or four of the ruilians,
for daring to "look" at theui. lie gave them
iio provocation whatever.
While tit is was golug on inside, the crowd

The other passengers expected every moment
to have their turn of cross-examination in the
same style as that administered to Mr. Thorn-
tou, but betore the examiners had time to go
throueh the entire car lu this way the next
on an Wed, when the mob ran down towards
it aud dragatd out and beat several of the pas
senders in the most brutal manner. Une pas
senger was palled bodily out of the side window
and kicked and beaten by the mob till they could
pummel him no mors.
The third car arrived, and its occupants were
treated in the same way. After this the rofHans
staggered through the cars, shouting for dey
ni our and Blair, with imprecations that if uy
" Grant and Collax man dared to say h was
for either of them, they would, kill him ou the
spot."
fone of the passengers were armed, at least
no weapons were displayed by them.
After the cars were coupled the mob un
coupled them, with shouts that they would
keep the train there, and not let it go to Puila
delphia. The conductor and engineer, however,
coupled up as rapidly as possible, and succeeded
in running the "through cars" out to the switch,
and back again to the depot, to attach the Balti
more car. This was the stsnal for another
attack. The rioters again entered ths smoking
car, and a man, standing on a front platform,
ran into the baggage car, pursued by as many
as conld kick and beat him.
Duriug all the time this was going on there
were three or four uniformed policemen present,
who appeared either to fraternize with the
rioters or to be afraid of them, for no arrests
were made, as could be seen from the cars.
A number of WashliiBton passengers, who In
tended coming to Philadelphia, were left at
Baltimore, having escaped In the confusion.
How many were hurt, or whether any were
killed, could not be ascertained by tho passen
gers, as the train moved off while the excited
crowd was roaming round the depot.
