Sketches of the Republican Candidates
GENERAL JOHN F. HARTRANFT,
the Republican oandldate for the office of
Auditor-General, was born In Montgomery
oonnty, Pa., December 16, 1830. He graduated at
Union College, Bobenectady, In 18 j3, and at tbe
time of tbe breaking one of tbe Rebellion ne
was engaged In the practice of the law In Mont
gomery oonnty. He raised tbe 4th Pennsylva
nia Regiment of three months' volunteers, and
at the tlrei battle of Bull Run he served on the
siatt' of General Franklin.
After tbe discharge of the 4th Regiment,
Colonel Hartranft raised tbe 61st three years'
Regiment, which be led at tbe battle of Roanoke
Island, In February, 1802, and also In the bril
liant charge by which tne town of Newborn was
carried In tbe following March. Colonel Har
tranft fought gallantly at tbe seoond battle of
Bull Run, at Cnanlilly, at South Mountain, and
at Antletam. In 1803 Colonel Hartranft par
ticipated In tbe campaign agalust Vloksburg,
under General Grant, and after the capture of
thai place he commanded tbe 61st Regiment,
nnder General Bberman, In Mississippi. At
this time he suffered much lsorn Bunstroke,
and was obliged to return to tbe North. Ia No
vember, 1863, be rejoined the army near Kuox
vllle, Tenn., and commanded tbeseoond division
of the Ninth Corps. He took part in tbe bitlle
of Campbell's Station, and during the siege of
Knoxvlile he turned bis knowledge oi engineer
ing to account by the construction ot dams to
Interrupt the progress of the enemy's forces.
In Marcb, 1804, be was deiacned to take com
mand or tbe rendezvous at Annapolis lor the
Blh Corps, then la process of reorganization,
and soon alterwards he was assigned to tbe
oororcandof tbe 1st Brigade of tbe 3d Division
of the corps. He participated with distinction
in tbe bailies of tbe Wilderness, Bpoltsylvanta,
North Anna, Cold Harbor. Petersourg, Weldon
Railroad, Reams' Station, PoplarGroveOhurob,
aud Hatcher's rnn. His valuable services in
these engagements were recognized by Gene
ral Grant, and be was accordingly appointed
Brigadier-General, to date from March 12.1801,
"lor gallant and meritorious services during
tbe war." In the last battle of tbe war he took
a distinguished part, and bis bard-won victory
over tbe Rebels at Forv Bteadtnan gained for
hm bis brevet of Major-General. In 180) be
was elected Auditor-General of the State of
Pennsylvania by a majority of 22,000 over W.
II. H. Davis, the Democratic nominee.
GENERAL JACOB H. CAMPBELL,
the Republican candidate lor tbe offloe of Surveyor-General,
was born in Somerset eon my,
Pennsylvania, on the 20ih of November, 1821.
He was apprenticed to tbe printing business,
and followed It for a number of years. Subse
quently be engaged In other occupations, aud
la 1861 be went to California. In 1853 he esta
blished bluiself at Johnstown, Pa., aud at the
breaking out of tbe war be was oouneoted with
tbe Cantorla Iron Works. In 1801 be was one of
tbe first to volunteer ior the defense of tbe
country. The company to whlob he was
altaoned was Incorporated in tbe 3d Rjgi
noent oi Pennsylvania, Volunteers, and
Lieutenant Campbell was appointed
Quartermaster. On me 301 hot July, ISolhe was
commlskioned by Governor turila to raise a
regiment, which, when oiganizud. was deslg.
Bated the 64tb. For sometime Colonel Camp
bell was stationed on tbe line of tbe Baltimore
and Ohio Railroad, aud performed efficient
servlo there in protecting tneroad. In March.
J 803, be was assigned to tbeoomma.id of the 4lb
Brigade, lt Dlvlaion, 8lb Army Corps Colo
nel Campbell took an active pari la tne battle
of New Market, and tbe deiermtued aland
which bis regiment made in a great measure
aved Hlgel's army from rout and demoraliza
tion. In bis report of the battle General
Bigel acknowledged Colonel Campbell's ser
vices In the handsomest manner. For his
bravery at tbe battle of Piedmont, under Gene
ral Hunter, be was breveted a Brigadier
General. He took an active part In various
battles and military manoeuvres under Gene
rals Hnnter and Bnerldan, In Virginia, and no
totbe time of bis being mustered ont of tbe
service, in tbe fall of 1804, be was never absent
from bis command except three weeks, when
be was sitting on a Court of Inquiry, and dur
ing a period of thirty days, when be waagranted
"leave of absence." General Campbell was
originally a Jackson Democrat, but In 1848 he
voted for tbe Free-soil candidates, Van Baren
and Adams, and ever slnoe be baa acted with
tbe party of liberty and progress.
In 1805 General Campbell was elected Surveyor-General
of the State of Pennsylvania bv
a msjorlty of 21,986; bis competitor being J. P.
Linton.
GENERAL HECTOR TTNDALE,
tbe Republican candidate for Mayor, la a
Pblladeipblan born aud bred. He is about
forty-seven years of age, having been born In
this city In the year 1821. In 18.17 be visited
Texas, and remained tbere two or three years.
Previous to this he bad been a somewhat
ardent Democrat, but what be sa of the prac
tical workings of the slave system, and of the
Democratic party In the slave States, caused
him to alter hisoplnloni, and wnen ne returned
borne be attached himself to the Free-soil
parly, and became an ardent opponent of
slavery. Mr. Tyndale succeeded bis father in
business, and for many years be has been favor
ably known as one of the 11 rm of Tyndale &
Mitchell. As a merchant and a citizen be has
always given a liberal support to all public
enterprises and improvements, but be has
never bten a politician and has never sought
any office. He has taken inuou lntereat In our
mliitla organizations. He was connected wltb
tbe Washington Graya for some time and was
after waids captain of the Cadwalailer Greys.
At tbe time of tbe bieaklng out of tbe rebel
lion Captalu Tyndale wax In Europe on private
bitHlneffl, but be immediately returned, .and
accepted tbe position of Major in tbe 23tb lini
ment Pennsylvania Vo'unteers, uuder Colonel
(now Governor) John W. Geary. During tbe
autumn and wiuter ol 1801 and tbe spring of
1H02 Major Tyndale wa stationed at Baudy
Hook, opposite Harper's Ferry, for the pur
pose of guarding about ten miles
of tbe front line along tbe Po
lomao river. He also participated, nnder
Colonel Geary, In tbe act Ion at Bolivar Helmuts,
and In the marob to Edwards' Ferry, when
Colonel Baber s oommaud was defeated at Ball's
Blutr. In 1863 tbe 28lh H glment formed a part
ot General Banks' Corps, and when Colonel
Geary was promoted to tbe rank of Brigadier
General, the aotual command of the regiment
devolved upon Lieutenant-Colonel Tyndale,
owing to tbe ill bealtn of the new Colonel.
Korponay, and be did good service in guarding
portions of tbe Manassas Railroad, la reoon
nolssances, and in almost dally skirmishes
with tbe enemy. During General Pope's cam
paign LleutenanlColonel Tyndale commanded
the regiment, and participated in tbe actions of
Rappahanock Btaiion, Freeman's Frd, War
renton, and Sulphur Springs. At Chanltlly be
held two of ibe principal bridges across Bull's
Rnn until tbe army and trains bad passed, aud
then destroyed them to Impede tbe advance of
tbe enemy. In tbe campaign under General
McClelian, .L'eutenant-Colouel Tyndale com
manded General Geary's Brigade, and at the
battle of Antletam bo was in the thickest of the
tight. His horse was shot from unier him, and
be was finally struck In the bead by a musket
ball and fell on tbe field of battle, apparently
dead. His bodv was readied by bis gallaut
comrades. who prevented It from falling Into the
bands of the Rsbels when bis brigade was
driven back. Afier many months of suffering
he at length recovered sufficiently to take the
field again, and was appointed Brigadier-General
of Volunteers for gallant and odloer-like
conduct.
He was engaged in v .rlous services until tbe
12th of July, 1803, when Be reported to General
Meade, wbo was tben in pursuit of Lee's army
after tbe battle of Gettysburg, and be was as
signed to tbe lltb Corp, nnder General Howard.-
He participated in all tbe movements of
tbe Army of tbe Potomac nnlil the defeat of
Rosecrans at Oblckam iuga, when he was or
aered to the West, and be was mainly Instru
mental In securing a vlotory for tbe Union
ai my at the battle of Wanbatobie. In tbe vic
tories of Missionary Ridae and tbe series of
battles around Chattanooga General Tyndale
took an active part, until May, 1804, wnen be
was obliged to return borne on siuk leave, and
be bad only partially recovered when the sua
cesses ofGruBt and Bberman Indicated an early
termination of tbe war, and rendered bis
reinrn to tbe Meld unnecessary.
A few days ago Generl Tyndale reoelved an
appropriate recognition of his eminent ser
vices dnrlug the Rebellion, from the President
of the United States, lu tbe shape of an ap
pointment as Brevet Mwjor-General of Volun
teers, to date from tbe 181 b of May, 1803. This
brevet should have been conferred long ago,
but it was delayed on account of General Ty u
dale's well-known political principles, and be
cause of tbe disagreement between tbe Execu
tive and the bead of the War Department,
while Hon. Edwin M. Stanton held that posi
