The Feast op the Tabbbnaclesi. Last even
ing l be Jewish festival entitled the Feast of the
Tabernacle commenced, yesterday being tho
14th day of the seventh month. Tisri. It I
f ulif luntially tho Arbor Festival, called in
Hebrew (.'bag lla-sucoth, named by some, also,
thug llaislph the Feast of Gathering, or Feast
of Autumn. According to the Talmud the ruott
essential part of the huts or arbors meant la the
ioof, which must be loosely covered with green
or dij blanches, to as to aJmit the rays of the
sua epureiy. During these seven days each
Hebrew, during divine service, takes in his hand
a pulm twig, Lulab; a handsome fruit of at tree.
Esrog; a twig of myrtle, lladai; and of a wil
low, a roe Nachal, called the lestive bouquet
(Arbaah Minim). On the seventh day of lbs
least (Uothaua Kabba) is added another bunch
of willow twigs.
As to the precise meaning of this composition
the Jewish theologians are not united. Borne
believe it to be a sign that, belore God, the
noblest and the meaaest are alike; others declare
it to mean the four principal parts ot the human
body the heart, the trunk, the eyes, and the
lips, which all should be consecrated to the ser
vice ot the Lord. The two first, the 15th and
16th da; ot lisn, and the two last, the 22d and
23d, aro whole feasts, (Mikra Eodescb); the five
inteiTeniutr days only halt-feasts (Choi II a m
moed), the tame as Easter. The two last days,
as the close of the feasts of the Tear, are called
bbeminih Azereth, and as with the last day
clctes the fifty-fourth weetr (Vcsotb. Habera
chab), and the reading of the Pentateuch is
yearly completed, th's last day is given peculiar
significance and festive pleasure as Simchatb
Thorn, or the Joy of the Law.
Interesting services, niarkrd by much,
soleninity.were held in the different Jewish svna
goeucs, as follows: Adah Jeshurua, New Mar
ket street, near Noble; Bethel Bweth, Franklin
street, near Green; Beth Israel, Crown street,

Chivalrous Democracy. Last night a fracas

pased the headquarters of the Grant and Colfax
Club, on Main street, sent p a yell for their
standard-bearers, Seymour and Balr. Patrick
Salmou, one of the Seymourites, drew a revolver,
which he flourished over his head.
Policemen Horrock and McClintock made an
effort to secure the rioter, when he aimed and

with this, he fired another load, the contents

veiely beaten by the mob. The Injured men
were tHken to their homes. Baeaequetitly
