THE ftAjLY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 18G8.
MUSICAL AND DRAMATIC
"CrMpIno" In EnfflMli.
Mr. Brnard la ambition as well a enter
prising, but sometimes In her effort to add
good worki to her repertoire aba mlsoaloalate'
the powers of her troupe. We think: that tbli
waa the ease with regard to the Brother Rlool'a
eomlo opera of Crdpino and the fairy, whloh
Waa given at the Aroh Street Theatre last even
lug for the first time In English. Oar only
English opera troupe haa snooeeded so well last
When we least expected that they would, and
their performances, aa a rale, are of so high an
order of merit, that It becomes us to be oharl
table In considering their comparative failures.
That Crispin, aa given last evening, did not
make a favorable impression la attributable
mainly to the fact that the Rlohlnga troupe
does not contain enough good buffo aotora to fit
the half-dozen or bo leading characters with
capable representatives. It Is but Justloe to the
artists to say that they appeared to exert them
selves to do their best, but the lively spirit of
genuine fan and frollo, whloh is so contagious
With an audlenoe, was absent, and the per.
formanoe was consequently somewhat flavor
less. The east, too, did not lnolude the full
trength of the company, Mra. Seguln and
Meesra. Campbell and Castle being absent
These artists would have done much toward)
making the affair pass off with spirit. Mr.
Beguln, who is a muoh better aotor than he V a
Bloger, gave a very amusing personation o
Crlsplno;" and Mrs. Bernard acted and sang
With muoh spirit as"Annetta." The danolug
duet between this couple, at the end of the first
act, waa very well done, although the entbusl
estlo encore which It obtained was due more to
the oomloal antics of Mr. Beguln than to the
vocal merits of the duet. The quarrelling trio
between the doctors, la the third act; the "pan
cake" song by "Anneita" in the fourth aot, and
Similar bits here and there, were given In good
Style, although It must be oonleised tliat. as a
Whole, the performance suffered greatly In
comparison with that of the Italian Troupe last
Winter at the Academy of Muslo. In the lan
guage of Beau Brummel, thU was "one of our
allures."
Mr. Adams Reading;.
Me. Rufus Adams gave a reading last evon
log at Musical Fund Hall, for the benefit of the
Knights of Pythias. Mr. Adams gave a number
of fine selections from Shakespeare and other
popular poets In a style that excited the hearty
Applause of his audlenoe. Mr. Adams has made
the works of Shakespeare his speoial study, and
bis interpretation of the passages selected for
last evening's entertainment shows that he has
Studied understanding and with an appre
ciative spirit Mr. Adams also read several
humorous pieces with fine effect; and "The
Ghost," the "Two Vagabonds," and thesoenes
from Dickens were In a directly opposite vein
from a scene from Macbeth, "Clarence's Dream,''
.VTarrhaslus," etc.
Tbe City Theatre.
At the Abou, Mrs. Bernard will have a bene
fit this evening, when the Lily of Killarney will
be performed. At the Matinee tc-morrow Oris
pino and the Fairy will be repeated, and to-morrow
evening the season will conclude with the
Mo of Cattile.
At the Walnut, Mr. Edwin Adams will
have a farewell benefit this evening, and he
Will appear as "Raphael" In the drama
of tbe Marble Heart, and "Romeo Jaf
fler Jenkins" In Too Muoh for Good Nature
Mr. Adams Is a good aotor, and as he has a hos
of friends In this city, we doubt not but that he
Will be complimented by a full house.

formed this evening, to-morrow (terswu, null I
to-morrow evening for the last times. On Mon.
day the spectacular drama of Undine will be
produced.
At Hooley's Opera House, this evening, Mr.
Joe Brown and Mr. William Allen will have a
farewell benefit, prior to their departure for
Europe, and they will appear in a grand trial
of skill for the championship In jig dancing.
They Will have the aid of Hoo ey's minstrels in
the entertainment. The burlesque of the
Grand Ducheteof Gerolslein will be given, with
Rloardoas the "Duchess;" and Joe Emmett, the
Dutch comedian, Arcby Hughos, Cool White,
and other favorites will appear.
Musical Notes.
Wagner, the musician of the future, appa
rently has a rather poor opinion of Gounod.
He expressed himself recently as follows about
the Faust of the latter: "A Paris composer
without the least ambition, takes it into his
head to translate Goethe's poem into the jargon
ever seeking for effect, which suits his public of
the boulevards a nauseous salmagundi, a
sickish sweet platitude, in a lorette's affected
style, with the music of a roan of subordiuate
talents, who would attain something, and in his
distress resorts to every means. After seeing
this opera played at Paris, one could not bat say
to himself. This time at least it will be lmpossl
hie to re-begin in Germany with this opera that
which occurred with Rossini's Wi iam Te(L.
One was mistaken. Faust, in turn, inuidated
like a bible of pleasure the heart of the public
of German theatres."
All of which seems to indicate that the gall of
bitterness is In the heart ot the composer of
Tannhauser.
La Grande Duchesse de Gerolstein Is now
feeing performed at oue of tbe Lisbon theatres,
and it pleases the popular fancy there as much
as in other places where it has been produced.
Some bilious autl-Offenbachers, however, have
entered a protest in favor of high art by bring.
Ing out at a rival theatre a piece entitled Who
Wi'i dejver us from La Grande Duchesse f It
appears that the critics cannot agree about the
merits of opera bouffa lu LUboa auy more than
In Philadelphia.
A well-known and popular Parisian teacher
find writer on music, known as M. Stephen de la
Madelaine, is dead. His real name was Etienne
Jean Baptists Nicolas Madelaine.
The Bateman opera bo affe company have
appeared, with great success, at Crosby's Opera
House, Chicago, in La Grande Duchesse aud La
Dele lleiene.
Max Maretzek will open with his opera
ompaay at Crosbj's Opera House, Chicago, on
Monday. Miss Fanny Kioiball, of Boston, will
shortly make her appearance in Italian opera
With Maretzek's company. Miss Kimball is a
pupil of Slgnor Ernsui, the instructor of Mis5
llauck, aud those who have heard her sing
ipeak of her vocal abilities in the highest terms.
The Musical Festival at Gloucester, Eng
land, which began on Tuesday, the 11th Instant,
and continued all the week, .was enjoyed by
thousands. The orchestra consisted of seventy
pieces, and there were two hundred and fifty
singers in the chorus. Tietjens, 61ms Beeves,
Santley, MadamoLutbart, Lewii Thompson, and
other distinguished soloists participated. The
director was Bamuel Sebastian Wesley, sou of
the celebrated musician Samuel Wesley.
Watson's Art Journal eays that the Chinese
Ambassadors shed tears when Mrs. Clara M.
JJrinkeiboff sang "Home, Stveet Home'' for
them, during their, sojourn 1a Washington,
Prnmatle Note.
Mr. Edwin Booth concluded a rLr1 "uccess
ful engagement at the National Theatre, Cincin
nati, on last Saturday night. Booth was 8TJ

Tbe remarkable and ever-young actress,
M'me Dejazet, has boon on the stage without
interruption for sixty-two years, having msde
her first appearance when she was only eight
years of ape. On the Cth Inst., at Lyons, M'me
Dejazet took her first communion and was con

Madame George Sand's aud M. Paul Mou
