Tftc Uoneral Character of Cricket.
From the Cricket field
The gftnie'of cricket calls into requkition all
the cardinal virtues, some moralist would say.
At with the Grecian games of old, the cricketer
must ba sober and temperate. Tatlence, forti
tude and self-denial, tbe various bumps ofarder,
obedience, and pood humor, with an unrufHel
temper, are lndlspe arable. For Intellectual
virtues wa want Judprnent, decision, and the
organ of concentratlveness every faculty In
tbe free ue of all Its limbs-aud every Idea In
conethut exercise. Poor, rickety, and stunted
Wits wiM rever serve the widest shoulders are
of little use without a he. id upon them the
cricketer wants wits down to his fingers'
ends. As to physical qualifications, we
require not only tbe volatile spirits of the Irish
niau rampant aud the Scotchman coucliant, but
we waiit the Anglo-Saxon combination ot thp
two. The brain must glow with Nature's fiie,
and rot depend upon a spirit-lamp. Mens ami
in corpore sano: teed tbe body, but do not cloud
the nnud. You, sir, with lh bectic Must, the
fiie of jour ejes burnt low in their sockets, with
beak as sharp us a woodcock's (rom living upon
suction, with phlliil lace and shaky hand our
game di(la'ns such hot-liko votaries Iiie
with the laik and scent the morning air, and
drink lrom tho bubbling nil, and then, when
your veins are no Jobber evired with alcohol
net pofled with tobacco smoke when you have
rctiui d otir illicit spirits and clarlQcd your
unsettled judgment "come again and devour
up my discourse,"
There is a wide difference between a srood
woikmou und a bn of teols, however sharp.
We must have head as well as hands. Yon
may be bir enough and MroiiR enough, but the
question is whether, as Virgil says:
"Splrlius lulus a'lt, ttilauique infusa per artus
Mtn agliat mo.ern, el niagusse corpore inlHcet,"
And lu these lines Vlnrtl truly describes the
rlpht surl of man for a cricketer plenty of life
In him; not barely soul enough (as Kobert
South said) 1o keep bis body lrom putrefaction;
but. however large his stature, he must have
tons m proportion, and be instinct with seuse
all over. Ihen. says Virgil, igneua eat atlta
vigor--be must always have the steam up; and
then our bard proceeds to describe what dlaci
plme will render those who suffer the penalties
of Idleness or Intemperance tit ' to join the
chOBen few In the crick?t-ueld:
"Allude per aiD0hm
M'tlmur liiysluta el iaucl as a arva tenemus."
We make no apology lor classical quotations
At the schools and universities, cricket nnd
scholarship very generally go together. Heads
vs. Veels was ouce su?ae ted, and It is doubtless
only to avoid an luvidions distinction that It
has failed to be an annual university match.
"A rubber of whist," savs the author of the
"Diary of a Late Phj8iciriu"inhis "LawStudies,"
'calls into requisition all thoje powers of mind
that a banister most needs;" and nearly as
much may be said of a scientincgame of cricket.
But the enketer mus-, possess o.her quallflcd
tlons; not only physical and intellectual, but
moral ounlltications also. Ot what ava l is th
head to plan and hand to execute, if a sulky
temper paralyzes exertion and throws a damp
over tho held; or if impatience dethrones judg
ment, and the mau h ts across ai good bIK
because loose bails are loLg in comius; or,
again, if a contentious au.i imperious disposi
tion leaves the cricketer all alone In his glory
voted tbe pest of every eleven? Eleycn good
tempered men, other points equal, wsuld bjat
eleven sulky or eleven Irritable gentlemen out
Of tbe field.
Cricket 13 not solely a game of skill chance
h&s oway eLough to leate the vanquished au if
and Abut. This very ni certainty gives the game
its interest. It Hay ward or Carpenter were sure
of iuns, who would care to play r But as they
sometimes make dve and fcoooetimes fltty, we
still contend with flesh and blood. Even Achil
les was vulnerable at the heel; or, mytboloi
cally speaking, he could not stop a shooter on
the leg stump.
Cricket Is a social game. Could a cricketer
play a solo, or with a dummy, bi might pliy in
humor or out of humor; but an Eleven is of the
nature of those commonwealths of which dcera
said that, without some regard to tho cardiual
Virtues, they could not poss bly hold together.
Games of some kind men must have, and it is
no small praise of cricket that it occupies the
place of less innocent sport". Without sport
you have no healthful exercise; to refresh the
body you must relax the mind, and to this end
cricket "doih most strongly tend."

I'lio Fnrnennynii War A Stubborn Fight
itt lliiiuuitu.
The New York Herald1? correspondent writes
as follows from Buenos Aues, 8. A., Aug. Ur
ine laten etining eent here ha been the
escape otthe whole garrison of Humaita to the
peninsula opposite the lort. It was first said
there were 4000 men, later accounts said 3000,
and now official documents state there were in
all 2510. Of these 1250 at last sui rendered, 1100
had escaped, leaving 150 as the numbr who
had perished by (bell, shot aud famine. Though
esrrouuded on every side, with lew pieces of
cannon, and provisioua for only a few days, and
only canoes and flatboats to evade a besieging lino
of iron clad?', yet they held out until by dssperato
efloris neaily Lalt their number did escape, and
the re?t yielded only after five days of laoiloe.
They weie persuaded by a Spanish priest, who
went with a flag of truce and besought them to
save their lives by a surrender. Borne were
wounded, and among them were women aud
children. They seized the biscuits thrown
to them with ravenous wilduess. The surrender
was ou tho 6th ot August, and tbe prisoner
were taken at once to ilumalta, and were there
divided into three compunies, and sent one to
each ot the three powers carrying on the war.
Our shaie arrived here to-oay. The officers
were allowed to keep their swords and chooe
their reildcnce. There were four chiefs, uluety
five efheers, and twelve hundrsd aud finv meo.
There is some anxiety hero now over tbe
subject of peace witbiu theieimblic. Tbe cause
otthe fear is this: A little before the election
for President in Juno last it was seen that the
ten electoral votes of in province ot Cornentes
were sure tor General Urquiza, and a small
party united and seized the reins of government,
threw Governor Ev arista Ljpez lu prison, am
ruled atiuirs in their own way. The day of the
election came, and affa'rs were too much disor
ganized to admit of any election at all, and the
eleetoral votes were lost. During the tw
months of the imprisonment ot Governor Lopez
his friends took up arms in his defense, and tbe
revolutionary party also called out every
available man lor their army. One General
Caccrcs leit his place in the natioual army
and placed himself at tho Urd of tbe
forces of Governor Lopez. Tue troops
of the two factions grew in cumbers aud
in rancor till they cniae to blotvf, and already
several very bloody skirmishes have been
lougnu une ot ineee was on the borders ot the
firovince of Kntre Rio-. Gcneial Urquiza had
n the meantime become Governor of Kntre
Hi 03, and gave his moral Hupport to the forces
of Governor Lopez, and bis troops claim to be
neutral, but pitch in whenever they can. The
complication is in the fact that the general gov
ernment has declared itself in favor ot the revo
lutionary party, and rails General Citceres, br a
proclamation, to appear before a court martial!
A note has also been addressed by the national
government, to General Urquiza, censuring his
position. The reply of General Urquiza Is calm
and dignified, and while ho strongly urges ptace
as ihe only ea e course for Ml parties, he de
clares tbut he will opooee revolution as u eood
citlzen.'lt will reauire a preac deal of piTlence
on the part ot our great men to avoid a very
serloua war.

the town of Prtlonville, a few milej trom this

credited. Ttii- week several prominent citizens
of the City of Aux Cajes were csptured by Sal
nave's adherents, the "Piquets," and sent to
him. They were instantly sh ji. Salnave recently
fitted out a barqae as a man or-war, and de
spatched her, in company with the small llavtlen
mail steamer Mariani, with provisions and am
munition to Gonaive. where bis friend General
Vlctorln Chevalier still holds out in his favor. It
has Just been rumored that the revolutionary
war steamer Liberie had succeeded in capturing
the barque off the coast.
Tho War wllh tho Piquet.
A Correspondent at Jacmel says, on the 10th
Inst: f'oromunlcation between this town and
Port-aa-Prince is interrupted. The only means
of communication ts by a postilion, who is the
beater of tbe BiUtsh mails only, all -other cor-ret-pondence
being interdicted by Salnave. As
a matter of satety, the poMilion travols with
the Britteh flag wrapped around his oody. The
Piquets. Halnnve's partlfats, still continue strag
gling about tbe towns, and although they take
good care not to come witbin cannon range,
they prevent the sending of supplies to the srray
behlealDg Port-au-Prince. Jacmel has escaped
falling into their power, throuch the oneigetic
measures adopted by General Hector. Mean

A New York 2ime correspondent at St. Do
mingo city says, ou the Oih instant: Tbe revo
lutionnrj banda In the Houtbwestern Provinces
continue their warfare against the Government
tioops. The delay in the final fall of Salnave, of
llajti, has given fresh hope to President Baez,
lor as long as halnave bolds out at Port au
Prlnce, Generals Cabral and Luperon and their
partisans will not be able to cross the Haytien
frontiers to bead the revolutionists. President
Baez has spread the news that be has received
information Jrom Kuropototbe effect that the
$2,000,01)0 loan had boeu finally neeotiated, and
tbat lunds would come to baud before tbe end
of the month. In consequence, he says, he has
sent the scbooter Leouor to St. Jsgo de Cuba
with a despatch to be transmitted to klurope per
cable, requesting his agent m London to send
him iunds at once. As may be supposed, these
tidirgs have caused a great deal of excitement
and have tilled everybody with hope. Stilt they
Bre disbelieved by a great many persons, as Mr.
Baez has always stuck to tbe policy of promises,
and of promises only. Meanwhile, misery con
tinues to prevail, and if the statement should
prove lalse and the money of the loan not be
forthcoming, the state ot suspense may eventu
ally prove costly to Mr. Baez.
