composer whose fame increases with each suc

Madam Meyerbeer has been victorious In

without Mapleson.
Miss Kellogg and Max Strakosch arrived

United 8tates after recent trlamphs in London.
DRAMATIC ITEMS.
" Mr. Fairclough's acting does not suit all the
London, as it did not su t any of the American
critics. The Pall Mall Gazette lets him down
rather easy, but says that he is the "slowest and
tamest of 'Hamlets.'" It, however, admits that
there is a certain air of grace and intelligence
about his acting.
The Londoners are to lose two of their most
popular places of amuement, the Colosseum
and the City of London Theatre, which are to

A Palatial Btorb. We are alwes p'eaied to
chronicle i he march of Improvement lo the erection
of One business edifices, and to-day propose le give a
short description of the spiendid new building now
just being completed for Messrs. Btrawbrldge A
Clothier, at the northwest corner of Eighth and
Market street.
This Arm, finding their old stors entirely too small
for the nerds of their constantly-growing business,
made during last spring a contract with Messta.
Balderston A Albertson to erect for them a Qrst-clais
Flctou stone store one that would accommodate the
demands of a large business, and at the same time be
a credit to the builders and an Improvement to the
neighborhood. The conditions of the contract were
that possession should be given on June I, and the
building ready for occupancy by September 10. This
would seem an Impossibility, hut the energetic builder
so ccniracted, and on June 1 commenced to take
down the old holldlogs. Since then lis dally progress
has been watched by thou anda of our clilseua, and
to-day one ot the handsomest and most substantial
structures In oui-citv stands at the northwest corner
of E ghtb and Market stretts.
The building Is five stories In height, and has a
front on a aiket street ef 42 feet. It Is Iron front up
to the second story, from there to the top of Nova
Bcotla Plcton stone. The side on Eighth street Is of
fine pressed brick, with stone pilasters and trim
mings. The stone work was furnished by Mr. Wm
Gray, and Is done In such a manner as to add to bis
already high reputation. The Interior Is worthy of
more notice than our space will admit of. It is cer
tainly one of the neatest, most conveniently a ranged,
and artktlcally finished buildings our city can boast
of. The first story Is It feet In, height, and the celling
being panelled with walnut, with gilt carnloe, pre
sents a very rich appearance. The fixtures are plain
but worthy of notice from the neatness of their
arrangement and adaptability to the purposes re
quired. On this floor Silks, Dress Goo la, Hosiery'
etc., are dlsplayt d; not to forget the Cloth department,
which will be a specialty. The rear portion oi this
room Is lighted by a fine skylight; thereby securing to
t the great advantage of always being well lighted In
every part. The cashier's office, on this floor. Is a
large eno'oaure, elegantly fitted up and surrounded
on all sides by French plate-glass. Attached to this
Is a department unlike any In our city. This Is a de
partment for remessurlng every article cut off at the
counters, to prevent errors from recurring. A sales
man, on cutting off any number ot yardi, sends two
t'ekets with the goods to the desk. One ticket goes
with the money to the cashier, the o' her with the
goods Into the side apart trie t for re-ezamlnation and
tying up previous to delivery. The advantages of
this system are obvious In front ot the cashier's
dtsk, from each side of the store, descends a short
stairway, the two Joining on a broad platform-
surmounted by an elegant mirror, and then pro
ceedlng by a few easy steps down a magnifi
cent stairway we are In a basement, the conn
terpart of which Is not to be found In our city'
It Is difficult to nelieve we are In a basement
while In this large and magnificent room. It ex
tends under the pavements ot both Market and
Eighth streets, and is lighted by Hyatt's patent
Ugbte, maklBg It as light as any tlrst-floor room. All
the appointments of this elegant sales-room are
first-class. Quite a variety ot goods are shown here.
Shawls, Linen Goods, Muslins, and Blankets are dls
played to great advantage. The portion of this floor
devoted exclusively to Ladles' Goods Is elegantly
carpeted. The private counting-room of the firm Is
also on this floor. On the west side, but entirely
separate from the sales-toom, are rooms for the re
ception, examination, and delivery of goods and the
storage of duplicates. A private stairway for the
use of employee Is on this side of the house, so as to
leave the main stairway always unobstructed. The
machine for hoisting goods Is worked by water
power; and Is the first of the kind put up In this
country. Under the basement Is a sub-cellar for
beating purposes, etc The building Is heated with
steam In the latest Improved style.
Everything appears to have been done that Inge
nuity could suggest or money furnish to nt up this
elegant store.
In place of the cebble stones on Market and Eighth
streets a Belgian pavement has been laid, lu keeping
with the nicety that pervades everything about the
building and making a comfortable stopping-place
lor carriages. The pavement of North Blver flag
stone was laid by Messrs. J. W. Selby A Co., and is of
the most substantial kind. One thing that psrtlcu
larly Impressed us was the very substantial manner
In which everything has been done From the loun
datlon up everything Is solid and massive.
The upper rooms, not being entirely omplete, we
withhold noticing for the present, but advle our
readers who have an eye for the neat and taste 'al la
business Improvements to visit this fine building
without delay, -
Messrs. Strawbrldge A Clothier open for business
next Monday, the 21st Inst., on which occasion we
doubt not they will be visited by a large number of
our citizens.
Chesteb. This becutifully located city on the
Delaware Is rapidly Increasing In point of population
and In the numberof fine residences and business
places. As one lands from the boat, tho first thing
that strikes his eye Is the mammoth Iron-works of
Beaney, 8ju A Archbold. In addition to the buildings
there Is a yard comprising an area of twenty-three
acres. The buildings cemprlse one large erecting
shop, a blacksmith shop, a boiler shop, an Immense
foundry, a car shop and a numbor of buildings con
nected with the boat-yard. Tbls firm have done a
great deal for Chester. They have Increased the
amount of business over two-fold, and have erected
some sixty odd dwellings for the accommodation of
the'r employes. Besides the vast amount of machine
work that Is In course of erection, they are now con.
etroctlng two large vessels one for the Lorlllards, of
New York, and the other for a private parly in the
same city.
After leaving these works, the visitor Is struck with
the beauty of the many residences that line the prin
cipal thoroughfare. One ot the most Important
places ot resort to the stranger Is the Central reitau
rant, presided over by David W, Morlsou, who well
knows how to cater to the appetite. DIreatly oppo
site, Mr. Morlson also has a large bakery, In couueo-
Hon with which he serves up Ice cream and other
dalntlee. Both of these places are so arranged that
any delicacy of the seaion can be served at the
shortest notloc Prominent among the dishes which
sre furnished at tbls seaon of the year are Beed aul
Ball Birds. Mr. Morlson enjoys a wide repa.atlou lor
the really fine style In which he sets these delicious
dainties on tbe table, lie Is now engaged In paoklng
down one thousand dozen of reed birds In Ice, so that
thry can be had through the entire winter. He claims
that be can furnltb them In the cold sea-on so that
tbey will retain the flavor which now makes them a
seught-for dish.
