UNION PACIFIC
RAILROAD
Are now fintsbed and la operation Although this
read is built with great rapidity, the work It thor
oughly done, and Is pronounced by the United States
Commissioners to be first-class In every respect, be
fore it Is accepted, and before any bands can be
leaned npon It,
Bapldlty and excellence of construction have been
secured by a complete division or labor and by die
inhaling the twenty thenrand nren employed along
the line lor long distances at once. It Is now probable
tbat the
WHOLE LLNE TO TIIE PACIFIC WILL
BE COMPLETED L 18G9.
The Company have ample means of which the Gov
ernment grants tbe right or way, and all neoMisary
timber and other materials found along tbe line or It'
operations; also 12, mo aotes of land to tbe mile, taken
In alternate sections on each side of Its road; also
Tiilird 8. a tee Thirty-year Bouds, amounting to from
M.rx.0 to $44,000 per mile according to the diOlouttles
to be snrmounied on tbe various sections to be built
for which it takes a second mortgage as security, and
It Is expected thatnot only the Interest, but toe prin
cipal an. ount may be paid In services rendered by
the Concpany in transporting troops, mails, elo.
THE EARNINGS OF TRK DNIOV PACIFIC
RAILftOAD, Irom Its Way or Local Business only
dorlugthe year ending Juue So, 1868, amounted to
over
FOUR MILLION DOLLARS,
Which alter paying all eapenses was much more
than sufficient to pay tbe lutereat upon Its Bonds.
Theae earnings are no indication of the vast through
traffic tbat must loilow ibe opening of the line to the
Puclflc, but they certainly prove that
FIRST MORTGAGE OOND3
Upon snob a property costing nearly three time
their amount,
ARE ENTIRELY SECURE.
The Union Paelflo Bonds run thirty years, are for
1000 each, and have coupons attached. They beat
annual Interest, payable on the first days or January
and July, at the Company' ollloe in the City of New
York, at the rate of six per cent. lu gold. The princi
pal Is payable lu gold at maturity. The price ia los
ai d at the present rate ot gold, they pay a liberal
Iceome on their cost.
A very Important consideration In determining the
value of these bouds is the length of time they huve to
run.
It Is well known that a long bond always commands
a much higher price than a short oue. It is safe to
assume that during the next thirty years, tie rate or
interest in the United Btates will decline as it has
done In Europe, acd we have a right to expect that
such six ptr cetit. securities as these will be held at as
high a premium as those or this Government, which
In 18:7 were bought I i at from Z0 to 2t per cent, above
par. Ihe export demand alone may produce this re
sult, and us the issue of a private corporation, they
are beyond the reach ot political action.
The Company believe that their Bonds, at tbe pre
sent rate, are the cheapest secuilty lu tbe market, and
the right to advance tbe price at any time is reserved,
