He uarrowl? e.-caped court-martlai himself, and
descended theueelorward irom a plotter ot cun-r-aigns
to be a thoroughly subservient servant of
Ueuernl Leo, who is diredly responsible for all
Jackson's successes.
I find throtiph the Virainla valley that Jack
fion never hud the con'ldence of the ritional
clhccrs under his command. He wa-i ambitious
almost to manlacy, woody, and mutterine luce
a pibbejiug person, lacked ihe element ot organi

the tervlce ot VixpiniH. lie knew nothing of
distances; being himself au extra irdiaary pedes

own example on the n.arch bbatned thetn from
murmuring; aud bis successes late la tne ser

armed. I state tbese thinps hero brcnuse I Lave been
Undeceived In the current Northern estim'e of
the famous warrior's ab lity at almost every

Bjnipathetic by temperament, ra-.li in judaaietn,
and bia victories are acribable to his inaudi
bility to laiipue and his repurdles'npf.s of it in
all bis airay. He led a Btrons. ardent body of
men, the flower of the valley; aud they would
march anywhere in the midst ol success, aud
Btratrple anywhere after deleat. borne of the
lollies of this wild brained soldier are bo noto
rious that I shall be old in relating them. When
lie seized Mariinsburg he burned lor y locomo
tives worth half a million (ioliar-, and all tha
bridges on the Baltimore and Ohio road, aud
then beeau to haul euaiues ulouu the turnpike
to Winoherter by horses, whereas be could have
run theiu ull up by rail had he not destroyed
the road.- The locomotives were a serious loss
to the Con'ederacv, and the rnst five battles he
ever fuupht could rot compensute tor their loss.
At the beguiling of the war he serioj.dy
counselled the takiup of no prisoner, arguing
that a solaier was bound to Liaht till he died,
and that' the Yankees bud no right to expect
quarters any way.
He had been accustomed to all sorts of rough
travel, on nag aud foot, and with any other
body ot men than the Valley of Virginia con
tributed, be could never have kept his command
together. General Lee had io subdue this
eccentric ze alot'3 crude notions of warlare be
fore be teeamo useful at all. 1 have picked up
some points about him at Lenington, Winches
ter, and elsewhere, which you may like to bavo
related.
The family of Stonewall Jackson came to
America 120 years ago. His remote aucvtor
was a common soldier In the revolution, aud
the third generation promised wel', intermarry
ing with Mrs. James Madisou's family. Jack
. eon's lather drank, gambled, and borrowed away
all his means; his mother married twice, and
died of grief. The orphan boy ran away from
the cruelty of one ot his uncles wearied of the
protection of two others, and finully disappeared
npon a vagabond career, down the Ohio and
Mississippi rivers. Returning ulcuo-t wrecked,
bis uncle put him to bird work, and rs he had
dyspepsia at an early age, he took the active
post ot constable In a mountain county. Here
bo whs celebrated as a rougb lighting character,
end his upcle put him upon the saddle a Jockey
in the country races.
Ho do-ccmled low iu the moral and social
scale, aud his accounts were short in several
cases, so that bis uncle, bis security, had to
make them pood. His biographer admits that
he provided himself with an outfit for West
l'oiut, by selling some public claims that he
'Was entrusted witu, and leaving ths uncle to
adjust them. He rauked among the poorest of
bis class, but slipped through the Institution
just in time lor the Mexican war, where Magru
der mentioned him favorably for handling ar
tillery well.
His common crlein, dullness, and the mean
ness of his associations, made him morbidly
bashful, aud grave for the most ot bis lite.
Hence be bepan to covet religious associations,
and shy, sell-introspection and belt-measure-ment
absorbed him altogether. lie used to say
that an officer ought to sacrifice everything else
to the attain rueut ot rank.
When Jacksou BDDlied for the Professorship 0
Tbilosopay and Artillery Tactics at Lexinutoo,
in 1861. his competitors were Cieorgo B. olcClel-
)au, Generals Rosecrans, Keno, and the ttebel
Geuerul G. W. Smith. He had probably the
poorest success of any of the professors being
obtuse, illogical, a lumper at conclusions, aud
Tjersonaliv iHwvmnathetic with bis nupils. He
used to tail dismally wilb his philosophical ex
periments, to the laughter ot bis classes, and bis
mind seemed always bet upon dreamy contingen
cies, w hile odds and euds of thiuis made up
the mass of his actual acquirements. He became
a 1'resbjterian the tirst j ear at Lexlngtou, but
wiiR so skeotical upon the niaiu poiuts of Calvin
ism that be twice meditated joluing the Methodist
Church. He was a rigid saooatarmn, whipped
bis own slaves frequently with his own hand,
end oftja whipped them or iauiug io come iu

went to war he hired tueni out, and be dial

Much of his power oiiplnated with his
pseudonym, ' Stonewall," given him by General
Lee at the battle of Bull Hun. "Texas Han
gers," ' Louisiana Tigers," "sitouewall" Jackson
fccartd us many us thev ever shot.
Of Jackson's dramatic piety on the battle-fleld
I hear dubious statements. He bad lost some
of his fineers, and used to bold them np, m If
on the attitude of prayer, to get the blood out
if the stumps. This wa said to be prayer on
the eve ot action. He had a fanhlon of creeping
around enmp in the dark to overhear what wTs
said of him. This was prayer in ambush. He
was addle od to dull controversial discussions
u hi fly tent, such as local preachers in agrl
cu.'lural sections indulge in and his estimate of
hluih'oir in contrast to General Lee may be in
stanced when he said: "I would follow Lee
anywhere bllndiolded."
That this sort of man should call the Northern
people "lanatlcs," Is something o id. His life,
excer t for the great eveuts to which it ws
attached, was essentially a commou-place life.
No adet of the Unl ed States owed it so much
gratitude. That cadetshiD saved Thomas Jona
than Jack-on from keeping a bar-room or
jockeying horses all bis days. He never ald a
f.ttrcwd luiup tbut staudg In record or memory,
and his death is a commentary upou his geue-ral-dr.p.
He ordered bis men to flro on any
body coming upaceHain road, ai.d straightway
wt nt up it himself. Tho sa-n troops that Jack
son led, as reeklcsl? marched, would have
conquered under anybody. They were the
lloer ot the Smth. high-spirited, fighting
stock; but lu the history of their loader 1 see

age of the w nr.
Ili last words were: "Let us no over the
river and ret in the shade." His prave Is tn
the vll'nge reuirlrry upoa a grassy knoll. In
view ot the blackened and hollow walls of the
military school where he was taught. Hence,
you can see the Blue Ilidtre near bv, unscarred
by the lone war, aud nipped panoramas of
nature on either side, with the pretty village
sti etching b-nenth. I felt, with all this maseu
lated stature ot Jackson recently mntlo kuown,
some senfe of ptnnJ association with bis grave,
it no more than ol the mighty battles he min
gled in. But 1 heard a nesro eiuginp as be
worked near by, fiee btI cbcery, and I woa
dered if this man had ricd lu vaiu; be lived on
in a dirge, not in any song.
