THE DAILY EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, TUESDAY, JUL r 28, 1868. . . NEW YORK GOSSIP. Irlvate Vheatrlnala-IIe-ltli Matter. . AasaMla at Work-A Ootrf. Nbw Yo, July 28, 1808. It roust not bo supposed that because no many four play-Kocrs and amateurs are out of town, that the taste for private theatricals la entirely extinct in the metropolis. On Wednesday cveulng a charming performance was given by an organization of young ladles and gen llpmcn known as the "ir?ing Amateur ComM natlon," at a private residence In Blxtecnt street.near Irving place. The entertainment com prised selections from the operatic as well as the dramatic stsgo. Bucks tone's petite comedy of A Kiet in the Park was enacted in a style which reflected the highest credit on all concerned In its representation. So admirably, indeed, was It played that the very unusual compliment of an encore was accorded, and the amateur artists tvere constrained to accede to the general and enthusiastic demand from the audience for an Immediate repetition of the comedy. This, we believe, is the first instance in the records of tho public or private stage of an entire play being encored. At 11J o'clock last nlfiht an affray occurred in John Flynu'a saloon, No. 180 Spring street, cor ner of Thompson street, between the pioprlelor and his late bar-tender, John Hodnett. It is alleged by the bar-tender that Flynnowed him a considerable amount ot money for wages, and that be called for the purpose of procuring it. Some words passed between tbem, and pistols Were drawn. In the roelets Flvnn re ceived a shot in the left arm, just above the elbow. Flynn livd two shots at his oppo nent, neitlier of which' took effect. Policeman Richard D. Scholos, who was on post in the vicinity, bearing the reports of the pistols, bun led to the scene, and arrived just us tlod Bett had retreated to the street, followed by Flynn. Scholes seized Hodnett, and called to Flynn not to fire. At the same time, ho released bis bold of Hodnett, and advanced toward Flyun, for the purpose of preventing fnrtlier firing. As bo did to, Hodnett fired auother shot, the ball entering the tie-hy part of the thigh of Officer Scholes, and burying itself in the muscles of the leg. Both men were sent to the New York Hos. pltal. Hodnett was lucked up for the nicht, and this morning will be taken belore Justice Led Wilh at tho Jeffeison Market Police Court. He la twenty-four .ears of age, and lived at No. 33 Marion street. It is alleged that Flyun has on previous occasions beaten and abused the bar' tenders in bis employ, and, knowing this fact, Hodnett went to the saluon prepared lor any emergency. With this cool weather there Is a noticeable abatement of the mortality, although diarrhoea Is still prevalent to a great degree. The total number of deaths last week was 781, of which 36U were from acute diarrticeal diseases, prin cipally in the First, Filth, Eleventh, Seven teenth, Twentieth, and Ttfeuty-drst Wards, the last two being the most unhealthy wards lu the City. The distribution ot disinfectants will doubtless greatly improve the sanitary condi tion of theee ward', but nothing will dispense with the necessity for properly cleaning tho streets and keeping them clean. Witnout that the work of disinfection is but a temporary expedient, and a proper njgienic condition ol the city impobsible. Necessity in the mother of invention and as Bucb, bhe will be found a bencticeut mother, on occa-ion, in spite ot her forbidding aspect. For iiikauce at hir bugesnon, the other day, the New Yolk Gas Company, In order toremovo the bad smell from their works, at tne foot of Twenty-first street, on the East river, discovered au oxide of iron which destroys tne odors of the gas more readily than lime, and is much cheaper. Shortly before dusk on Sunday evening, a woman, accompanied by a little girl, while promenading along the river walk at the Ely aian Fields, was purposely jostled against by eomo drunken ruffians with such force as to precipitate her lrom the sea-wall into the river. The woman, borne up by her skirts, was floated away to ttie switt current, and both she and the little girl would have been drowned, had not a citizen of New York, who witaebSed the outrage, plunged in und rescued tueui. The rufflins, without rendering assistance, made their escape. THE ABORIGINES. The Bridgeport (Conn.) Standard of July 25 aayi: On Tuesday of this week, July 21, a check was presented tt the counter of the Connecticut National Bank of this city, drawn for $4 75717 on the United Slates Treasurer, New York city, and purporting to be signed by J. K. Barnes, Surgeon-Oeneial United States army. The cheek wai in favor ot a Dr. James B. Smith, late Assistant Surgeon United States army, and was so endorsed by the latter. The check was car ried to Smith's accoust with the bank, and he immediately thereupon drew against the same to the amount of $3525. About 3 o'clock P. M. on the 23d (Tbuisday) tbebauk. turouithlta New York correspondent, received iutellteence that cn presentation ot tbecbeck at the United States Treasurer's ollice In that cP.y "'iio account" was kept there by the drawer of the check. This, of course, led to an immedia'e investigation by tie bank here and in New York city, which resulted In satlbljinc the officer of tho same tbat the signature of the drawer was a skilful forgery. They further ascertained that Smith, who, alter drawing the money, remained in this city and vicinity, left Bndaeport bv the eleven o'clock P. M. steamboat for New York on Wednesday, the 2'2d, under the name of "Dr. Crane." They further traced him to the South American Mramer Mcrrlmae, whtch left Ne v York for Kio Janeiro via St. Tbomss, on Thursday, the 23 I, t tbree P. M . having Smith on board, under the name ot "Dr. E. K. Crane, Assistant Sur-geon-Geuctal United States Army." Although the bank officials followed up their Investiga tions with the utmost zeal aud determination, the search only resulted in the discovery that Smith was some twenty tour hours 'over the seas and far away." Pr. Smith ha-, for a year or two past, been known in this vicinity as a practising physician in Nichols Farms, Trumbull: was reported 10 have removed there from Yonkers, and to have been during the war an assistant burgeon In the arm v. Smith was a man of gsod appearance and address, and was reported to be a skilful suigcon and physician. He had been, during his residence in this vicinity, a trequnt visitor at the bank In a business capacity. His standing in Nicbol Farms, and in this city, where he was well known, was eood. Tho chock used in the tran-actlon was the usual blank form used in drawing on the Assistant Treasurer United States. The Spice of Editorial Lire. The Springfield (Mass.) kepublican of July 27 savf.: The even tenor of the editorial life of our friends or the Evening Jiewa was rudely broken in upon on Saturday afternoon, at about 3 o'clock, by a personal attack with a rawhide made uron Mr. V, H. Sterns, one of the proprie tors aud editors, by John L. Rice, a marketman of this city. The cause was a brief paragraph in the Aetfsof the previous eveulng, mention ing no names, but relating a little incident in the lile ot an officer in the late war, tor whose rpponed death a young lady had worn mourn ing, aud who on his sate return had jilted her: and adding that he kept a meut market in (his cltv. Mr. Stems was marking his bulletin board when the man entered, who, alter ascertaining that he was one ot the editors of the News, and held htmi-clf responsible for tho pnragraph alluded to, drew lor'h a rawhide aud struck: Mr. S ems oxer the head and shoulders about a dozer, bio vs. As the assailant is a much ctroniier mau than Mr. Sterns, resistance would have been mere lolly, and none was made. Tue editor ascer ahied his name, und at once pro ceeded to enter a suit for damages against htm. Probably not a score of per-ou in Spriugdeld knew on Saturday morning that he was the individual referred fo a guilty ol what Is, after nil, an act as common as it is inexcusable, but on Satwday evening it's unlikely that there were a scoe who did not know 1'. If Mr. Ricd' sired secresy he took a singular tneam t retain it, und has eainpd instead a disagreeable and extensive notoriety. The (ireat Famine in Morocco.
