8. THE PAIL1 EVENING TELEGRAPH PHILADELPHIA, . FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13, 1867. Armjr of the CnmhtrUnd, The following call appears In the LonlsTille papers of the 9ih instant, and is conclusive in tarrying ont the objects of a meeting held in Chicago on the 28th ultimo. It is a flank movement from headquarters, but heartil ac ceptable to all oonoerned. To the Officers of the lae Armj of the Cumber land: . . Gentlemen: Having been addreiicd by many of our former comrades from all portion ot the country, in relation to the formation of an orsituization to be known as the "Society of the Army ot tbe Cumberland," we have finally dot rued it best to Issue a circular, suggesting that immediate notion be taken lor the speedy consummation ol this most honorable and de eirsHe project. We owe It to ourselves to the country at laree-lo the truths ol history to the memories ot the defcd heroes who went down at our sides od every (trlcken field where the banners of tbe Armv of the Cumberland" waved in the lore front of the tattle to the maimed veterans all over tbe land to the arjctitled ties formed in thone better days which brought out the man hood nod stern mettle of the nation, that we no longer neelect so imperative a duty, and one that our noble twin "Army of the Terjoesaee"' baa lone since perlormed in a manner so credit able to Its own proud record. Not only the hixtorlc past, with its blended memories of exultant triumph and hallowed sadness, but the vital interest of the present and the coming future, which no man may know," every iinpuke of the heart, every sentiment of patriotism, every principle of wisdom and Of manhood, miike it incumbnnt upon us that tMs matter be no longer deferred. It is needles, however, to multiply worda on thl subj io The ltibtrou remembrances of Cbicksmuuga, Stone Itiver, Franklin. Perryville, Nashville, and other fields of glory where our columns faced the horrors of a rebellious war, speak for it most forcibly. Your own memories, your own hearts, will plead most eloquently and effec tively in its behalf. In the furthermore of ibis object, therefore, we recpecifullv suggest that all officers of the late Army of the Cumberland, wherever they are, end whatever their occupation, who can possibly do so, will meet In convention, at Cin cinnati, O., on the eth day of February, 1868. Let us be lugpnrds no longer. Our path is clear, and honor aud duty alike becaon us to follow it. All pnpers friendly to this enterprise will please i?ive this card insertion. Wm. D. WmrPLK, Brevet Mj. Gen. B, W. Johnson, Mai. Gen. U. P. Thurston, Brevet Brig. Gen. Henet Stone, Brevet Brig. Gen. ft. A. Otis, Captain. FOREIGN ITEMS. A Piggbb'8 Wedpino. A curious circum stance recently ooourred at a "digger's wed ding," at Ballarat, Australia. The bridegroom on arriving at church, waited for pome time, lut all in vain, for the coming of his bride, upon whom he had liberally lavished some 150 to 200 in jewelry, dresses, etc., and it at last became evident to him that she had no intention of keeping her appointment. This being the case, and being desirous of not hav ing his journey and trouble all to no purpose, he proposed to one of the bridesmaids to whom he had previously made a tender of hi3 hand and heart, but who had rejected him that she should reconsider her refusal. Ad miring probably the philosophio spirit dis played by our friend, the young lady did re consider, and retracted her refusal, and, appa rently very much to the satisfaction of both, and certainly to the amusement of those pre EoLl, 1'ueJ wwe made man and wife, A Likihq for Frison. An old "gaolbird," whs has been convioted just one and twenty times, pleaded euilty. at the Middlesex (Eoir- land) Sessions, on the 19th ult., to Btsing a mackintosh, and, when as-J w'nat had to Bay for himself, repl'ed: "Well, my lord, I rather prefer prioa life to being in the streets. J h7S nad iiore than twelve years in prison. I cannot get employment, for the police hunt me down." Bainjr sentenced to ten years' penal sefvitude, he observed laughingly, "Well, I did not think I had so long to live. Yon are a smart old fellow. I hope 1 shall see yoar lordship when I come back, aud that you may give me ten years more. I would sooner be in prison than about the streets. I have got several places of employment, but the police have hunted me out of them." Tub Arab Jugglers. Mr. Frank Buokland gives in Land and Water the result of his ob servations of these performers. The snakes they handle are not poisonous, but belong to s harmless species common in France and England. The man who thrusts skewers through bis tongue and the hack of his neck has permanent holes for their introduction, and does not suffer more pain than when a lady puts on her earrings after leaving them off for some time. Other features of the ex hibition remain unexplained. Mr. Buokland concludes: "Altogether, I do not reoollect having seen an exhibition which combines so many horrible and truly sensational sights in to short a space of time." Roar; key. A novel system of roguery was exposed at Lambeth County Court recently. A Venetian blind-maker was oalled as a witness to prove that 7Ad. per foot for blinds was an overcharge. In cross-examination he said his price was 6Jd. if the customer asked the price beforehand, but he always charged 8d. If not asked. There had been no asking in 'the case before the court, the judge therefore held that the witness had proved just a halfpenny per foot too much, and allowed the 7Jd. A Swihs Observatory. At Neufchatel, in Switzerland, is an observatory organized on an extensive scale, and possessing the very finest instruments. Besides purely soentiflo results, it renders immense service to the chro nometer manufacturers by enabling them to pro duce watches which are every day becoming more perfect as time-keepers. This is impor tant to the branch of industry in question, which can only exist by constant improvement. Prizes have been instituted for the most per fect watches and chronometers. Tub Russian Debt. The Russian State debt now amounts to 1,219,443,535 roubles C$705, 000,000), on which the interest due for the present year is 73,843,505 roubles (9,230, 000). If to this are added the various issues of paper enrrenev in different forms made by the Oovernment' since 1859, the total amount of the obligations of the Russian State will be (So.rSo.ooT4 2'000'000'000 of roablos Tua Austrian CLEnov.-The Austrian clergy Mst includes 1 patriarch 4 primates, 11 arch fcishops, 68 bishops, 12,W priests, and 539 clerical wn. mn u, also 720 monas tenes, With 69 abbots, 45 provincials 6754 priests, 645 monks, 240 novices, aud 19'17 j brothers. The convents are 298 in number with 6198 nuns. The total revenues t tu Church amount to 19,639,713 florins. Wsrb Tubt Ablbbp f Dr. Onthrie's asser tion at Niddrie, that he had seen six hundred persons asleep during a sermon in a free church at Thurso, Scotland, has led at leugth to a protest and denial by the session or tne congregation implicated, and a reassertion of the substantial truth of his statement by the reverend doctor. "At any rate," he says, "they were in a very suspicious posture." A Temperance Hospital. It is proposed to establish a "temperance hospital" in Loudon, "where the sick may be cured without the aid 0 RltCliplicdjriflks, THE PRIZE 11INQ. Arrival of O'BuldwIn, tfc Irish Giant, ad Jack Micks' also Utd Pugilist, front Bafclasd, A giant of six ieet Ave yesterday came to New York, no less a character than O'Baldwto, the "Irish Giant," who was lome time since matched to 6ght Tom Mace, the champion or Eng land. He was accompanied by one of his com peers, who has also figured In the pugilistic ring, Jack Iiicks to wit. These two noted pu pilifts ot the English prise rinr arrived in this city yesterday morning by steamer from Eng land, and were received bf a delegation from the sporting com ni unity of New York, amoug whom were Joe Coburo, the American chum Plop; Rocky Moore, Dooney Harris, Frank Mc liitlre. John Grindcll, and others of celebrity. Tbey had a most hospitable reception at all the places they visited. O'Baldwln comes out to this country to meet Mnce, acralnst whom he was matched.to tight for the championship of England, but which fight was stepped by the authorities, Mace bemtr put under heavy bonds not to fight in England. The Britlch champion has agreed to meet O'Baldwin In this city, and, It 14 eaoected, will arilveinthe next steamer. O'Buldwin stand six feet five inches. 1 His first tight wss with Mareden, who defeated the OUnt. His next encounter was with Gorife Ile, whom ho de feated in fifty-seven rounds. Ho next fought Mursden again, and defeated him in sixteen minutes. He fought Mnce once.-and claims that be was robbed out of the tight. lie now awaits his arrival in this city. Jack Hick? has quite a reputation as aflghtcr, having met Bendoif in the ring about five weeks aro, aud will second O'Bxldwin iu the forth coming tight with Mace. N. Y. Hera d. The Conservative Balance. In 1S5C Mr. Buchanan was made President by a popular vote of 1,828,229. This was a minority of all the votes cast, Fremout having received 1,342,164 and Fillmore 874,025. In I860 there was again a minority President, Mr. Lincoln receiving 1,86(5,452, Douglas 1,375,157, Breckinridge 847,953, and Bell 590,631, a vote which, combined, would have defeated Mr. Lin coln by nearly a million majority. At the last Presidential contest, with part of the States out, a change of five per cent, on the whole of the votes cast would have given McClellan a majority. Where parties are so nearly evenly balanced as these figures indioate, it teaches to both the importance of modera tion and keeping in view the common good, instead of refusing to rise above partisan con 3iderations. - . A Hog Claim, v Mr. Charles L. Neale, stonemason, of Alet atdria, has been notified by a WashinK'oi lawjer ttat be is heir, through his aunt, Mrs. Lee, to about one hundred million dollars' worrh of real estalo in that city. Tue eround claimed to belong to the lady in question, and to Mr. Neale as her he;r, has on it some of the most valuable property In the Federal capital, including the Treasury Btiildlnar, Lalayette Square, President's house and grounds, and all the large and small buildings within tbe cir cumference of a mile around the Preiidcnt'a house.
