National Convention of Bask-Ball Tlatebb.
At 730 o'clock last night the delegate to the
National Bare-ball Convention ausembled in
Athletic liall.onTbirtecntb street, above Jeffdr
son. Tbe President was in the chair.
A motion limiting tbeieinarkot the members
to 10 minutes was adopted.
Mr. Curtis, of tbe Mutual Club, Judge elect to
the Marine Court of Near York, was the first
speaker, and directed his remarks to the decision
ol the Judiciary Committee io the case of the
Unions of Morrisiana versus Mutual of New
York, which declared all pau.es between thorn
as null and void. He stated that according to
tbe provision in the rul s of the Association, no
charges could be rendered against any club or
member of the Association by another club or
member, nntess they bo returned to the Secre
tary ot the Association within thirty days from
the occurrence complained of. lie warmly re
plied to the accusations uia;le auanst the
Mutual Club by a member ot tho Union Club,
and maintained that tho complaints arose from
a deep-rooted animosity aguiust the Mutual
organization.
Mr. fclbro, of tbe Unions, of Morrisiana, said
;. that the cbsrgcs made were endorsed by the
Club which he lepresented. The charges arose
from an alleged unfair action ot tbe Mutuals in
tie rubber game with the Unions on December
23, which was won by the former.
William H. Herring, tBq., ot the Union Club,
replied at length iu substantiation of tbe pro
ceedings of the Union Club, aii.l in his remarks
said that tbe ctiamolonsbip of any club for a
series ot years would eventually prove a curse
to it.
A member from the West, cltinjr the section
of the rules wbich declared that any club re
taining a person guilty of reprehensible conduct
lorleited its membership tu tbe Association,
thougat that tue Mutuals should be expelle i.
Another member, fro-n tbe West too, cited the
same section, and laeetlouly, vet earnestly, de
clared that the Unions should be expelled.
Toe previous question, on leersinir the deci
tion of tbe Judtciary Committee, was called up.
A vote was taken upon it, and resulted in an
almost unanimous expression for reversing the
decision.
Tbe next business in order was the considera
tion of the new code of rules reported to the
Convention. These have been greatly simplified
by clasHidcation, there bet rig now but seven
rules. Technical points, whicb In match games
were producitve of much oon'roversy and ill
feeling, have been 'made plsiu. Pending their
diecuseion, the Convention adjoained.
Tub Arctic Skating Park. The following
resolutions were passed by the Board of Health
on the 10th instant:
Jisoloed, That the skating park at the south
west corner of Eighth street and Columbia
avenue is hereby declared to be tbe cause of a
nuisance prejudicial to the public health, inas
much as the water from said park is drained
into the cellars of the houses on the east side of
fcighth street.
Jitsolved, That tbe owners, agents, or occu
.pants of s-iid park be directed to close the drain
lrnm tneir premises into tue cellars 01 said
homes forthwith.
Resolved, That the owners or occupants of the
hout-es on Eighth street opposite the park be
required to have tho wuler in their cellars
removed.
The citizens of the neiehborhaod" are not op
posed to but in favor of the park, except when
its drainage interferes with their comfort.
Fatal Result of an Affray. On Sunday.
Kovemter 3, an affray took place on Nicetown
laDe, near the new turnpiire, in which several
meu were engaged. One of them, named Frank
O'Neill, was stabbed in seven places about the
body, aud was taken to tbe Pennsylvania IIos
' pital in a very prostrated condition. Ho died
from the effects ot his wound last evening.
Koon after the affray Patrick MoVey and James
Kane were arrested oa the charge of aiding in
tbe assault, and were comm tied to prison to
await the result of O'XeiIVs injuries. As the phy
sician at the Hospital refused at all times to
give a certificate that he was out of danger, they
are undoubtedly in custody yet.
JOmitted. The following named Aldermen
weTe omitted from tbe list ot those payine to
the Treasurer tbe fines and penalties received In
lSiovembei: J. K. Massey, $58; John Swift, $30;
and Charles Mink, $32.
The Finance Committer of Councils met
last evening, and approved the sureties of Mr.
Peirpol, tbe City Treasurer elect, and also those
of tbe newly elected Chief Engineer of tbe Tire
Department .
"Supers."
A wretched set of men connected with the
stage are tbe oriinary "supers." Their ranks
inelude the densely stupid, the acute but lazy,
the indolent and careless, the active but unfor
tunate men who can neither write nor read,
and men who do both with proficiency. They
are presided over by a gent'emin known as
tbe "super master," and, when in neel of re
cruits, his mode of proceeding is- Ingenious.
. Having sought outan individual in an advanced
stage of starvation, be addresses mm in some
such terms as tbe following: "Look here, my
man, it jou want emplovmcrjr, Ml let you have
it at five bob a week. If you like the job. say so:
if o don't. I can find somebody else who
will. Of course, six is what the manacement
offers, but 1 can't be bothering myself for
notnine. and as I do you a favor, you muu't
grumble at the percentage." In all likelihood
the poor wretch ciosei with tbe otter. The
salary of a super manter in a leading theatre Is
about lbs. a week. If he bHs to eutfage a bun
dled subordinates, say for a battle scene, his
wages are incieased by an addendum ot 5. A
, super" is called a "gentleman" by the stacre
manMarer, who usually trea'i him as a dog. lie
pmsn't mitid bing sworn at. or. if need be,
shaken. It attentive and Industrious, he may
gradually rise to a position ot authority, but, in
nineteen cssei out of twenty, the man who has
be s on as a "int er" concludes his theatricul ex-
fierlenee in the same capacity. Thus far ot io
He on the state; but let the anpirant remember
that thirty-tiire men out of forty never rie
above it. Once a Week.
Stonewall Jackson, it ia well known, was
deeply Imbued with religious fueling. Another
witness to tin fact is llav. Mr. Clover, of North
Adams, Mass., who says: "About fourteen or
fifteen years ago I was rector of the Episcopal
church in Lexington, Va. )r. Vui! w9
