I THE DAILY EVENING TK1;K(I?APH PHILADELPHIA, FRIDAY, DECEMBER G, 1867. SEARCH IN a FOR THE POLE. nj OBOROB AL RKK TOWK8BND. ' (From the Leoture-'LaucH to the Worth of Us.") Sweetheart, the flag you gave me when we parted WareB in this Arctio blue; It In, my lost one, loving and high-hearted, - Not I who braru it, but the ghost of you. Warm-ml it flutters, like the firelight' flashing, When iu my arms you told IIow there were duties fonder than our passion, And comforts iu the polar cold. I Jtnow you will not kiss me, home-arriving, For more than oceans 'twixt hi roll; Still, dead one, dear one, I am striving, striving, Sweetheart I sweetheart ! I'm searching for the Pole I All day the solemn icebergs drift before ns, So shivering and stark; All night, beneath bewildering auroras, We hear the great nea-horse's freezing bark. The white bear follows over floes and ledges To see our camp-fires glow; The wolf-dogs fly in fear before our sledges, To scare tbe wondering Esquimaux. Long howl the silver foxes ad we gallop, To mark ruau pans their furthest goal, Where never sea-bird screamed above a shal- r. lop' . Sweetheart t sweetheart t we're searching for the l'ole 1 Low throb the tidos; the pallid stars set never; The needle Dickers chill; The pitting conipasj points 'from our en deavor Still steer we North by our magnetic Will 1 Dead-faced, the steady Boreal orb above us Shines with no cheering hue; . . Our icy dreams are full of those who love us They cry "Come back !" the good, the true. But from Man's cause shall no man's tears recall ns; "Proclivfor!" cries the deathless soul; Fling out our flag, whatever fate befall us , Sweetheart ! sweetheart ! we're searching for the Pole 1 The ice-floes southward float while we are urging Across their crackling crust; Wide pplits the ocean to its undersurging; In God's right hand to bear us up, we trust: And one by one our comrades, hungering, thirsting, Drop in the snows to sleep; We bend and kiss them, with our poor hearts bursting, And journey on: we dare not weep. We leave them milestones, that men may pur sue us, And for their martyr's aureole, The Northern Lights burn beautiful unto ns: Sweetheart 1 sweetheart 1 we're searching for the Pole t Alone I go, my last brave sailor perished; I fall, dear heart t I faint; Out of my hand your flag so well I cheriaed, Reach down from Heaven and bear it on, dear saint 1 No farther from me in these lone bleak regions, Than where we loved and wed, Robed in your white and beautiful religious, I knew you followed me o'erhead. Oh blirs 1 Nor death nor seas nor winter sever My deathless purpose from my soul; The' flag of love and courage blows forever, KtVPAt.TrtAart I RvAathuftrt 1 stji BonviiltinfT frtl the Pole 1 'On an eminence overlooking the Artlo Ocean, Franklin bad the mournful privilege of unfurling to thecold breeze a banner presented to him by bis li rat wife for this purpose, ai sue lay on ber death-bed, a fen day before bis departure, She died tbe day after lie leit England." American CycloinrMa. Influence of Ellctbkity on Plasm. M. Dlondiau, of the French Academy of Science, has recently made some interesting experi ments with electrical currents upon plants. It appears from these experiments that an induc tion current only produces a destructive effect on the organs of plants when, in consequence of the flab bines i of their tissues, and the large quantity of liquid matter they contain, it finds an easy passage; but that it does not pro duce any sensible effect when it acts on solid tissues. Nevertheless, by increasing the . in tensity of the current, and applying it for a considerable length of time, the tissues of lig neous plants may be disorganized so as to cause death, as if the plant had been struck by lightning. When the current is made to act on fruit, it hastens its maturity. This efleot has been obtained on apples, pean, and peaches, those subjected to the ordeal of electricity having ripened much fasterthan their companions that had been let alone on the same stock. But the most curious effects were those produced on seeds before sowing. After making them conductors by keeping them some time in water, they were subjected to the current for a few minutes. The seeds operated on were peas, beans, and wheat. After electrifying them, they were sown in pots filled with good garden mold, while other seeds that had not experienced the effects of the current were sown in other pots filled with the same mold and in the same state of moisture. The electrified seeds germi nated in all cases much faster than the others,' the stalks and leaves being also greener and more vigorous. Bat the most singular cir cumstance in beans was, that while in their natural state the rootB invariably strike down ward, a tendency which no mechanical means will counteract, electricity caused the roots to strike upwards, the cotyledons penetrating downwards, and the roots branching out into the air. This bears a fctriking resemblanoe to the inversion of the poles in a magnet. LEGAL NOTICES. IN THE ORPHANS' COURT FOR THE CITY AMI) COUNTY OF PHI LA DELPHI A. Estate of PERRY ODAN1EL, deceased.
